mpeg2 to huffyuv conversion
Ok... maybe a stupid question...
What software should I use to convert an mpeg2 file to a huffyuv?

Not a stupid question if you don't know the answer to it. There are several ways to do it- the preferred way (from what I can tell) is outlined in ErMaC's guide http://www.animemusicvideos.org/legacy/ErMaC/guide5.htm. Most people here would suggest reading through all of these guides- there is a wealth of information there. Another way (though more lossy from what I understand) is to use a program like FlaskMPEG (you can get this from the download page on Doom9.org. Both require you to have ripped (copied) the files off the DVD and onto hard drive (or at least work much better when you do...) using the programs also outlined in ErMaC's Guides.
For the Flask method, you load up the ripped .vob file(s) in Flask, crop the section you want if you like, and select the method/size/parameters to convert it.

Well, the prefered way in ErMaC's guide seems to involve using a DV500, or a really convoluted way of using the VOB files directly in Premiere. I don't have a DV500, and really think that the process of setting it up so that you can access the VOB files directly is more trouble than it should be. I think it would be simplest to just convert the source footage to a huffyuv avi, and get on with editing...
Flask doesn't seem to want to work for me at all. It doesn't even want to open any files anymore. I have had some success with TMPGEnc. TMPGEnc seems to work fine, other than the fact that it refuses to encode the entire file. I give it a 30 minute mpeg2 file, and I get a 20 minute truncated huffyuv avi... grrrr...

one method that would work is using the
Vob -> DVD2AVI -> Avisynth/virtualdub method that you'll find outlined for you in some faqs and howto's on www.doom9.org (a great resource for dvd ripping and such) You seem to know enough about what your talking about that I assume that you only want to take out specific scenes from your VOB file. (Huffyuv is a damn big codec... ie it doesn't compress well... but it compressess losslessly) The method outlined above will tell you how...
Just dick around www.doom9.org you'll find the information you want there...
Good luck

Ahhhhh.....ErMaC wrote:Follow the guide up to when you make your AVISynth file.
Open that AVISynth file in VirtualDub.
Select Fast Recompress, set Compressor to Huffyuv, and Save AVI.
Ok, that did it.... It's still a little bit of a convoluted process. But it works, and now I have 80 gigs of Rurouni Kenshin goodness to play with!
I still think the process with DVD2AVI, AVISynth, and VirtualDub seems like something that a single program could handle. But until I find it, I guess I'll have use that process.
