New anime with really good art/animation.

Post by x_rex30 » Sun Oct 16, 2005 4:59 pm

I want some recommendations from anime that you really like the character design, background art, animation, etc.. It's easy to find all the anime with good plots/stories.. so I don't see why I should bother asking for that.. also if you know any new anime with a very unique style. please list some. Thanks. :)

Steamboy

It's not liked by some only because of the lack of major action. Don't be mistaken, it does have action in it. Howevere it's not bent around blowing crap up. The plot is very deep, the character insights are awsome. Also the animation is very good and captivating. The background is also wide and thorough. I highly reccomend this anime.

How new?

In any case, this one should be new enough:
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

The art can be a little difficult to get used to for some, but it's really quite amazing. I'm mainly talking about the approach to 2D coloring - although the show in general has some very remarkable designs, in 2D and 3D; in terms of character design, architecture, and costumes. Really has a very distinctive and right feel to it.

It gets my certificate for the best aesthetic sense evar.

(if you've never seen anything of it, I suggest Tyler's "Sweet Revenge" as a great preview)
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Gah, I forgot to qualify what actually makes the Gankutsuou 2D art unique:

It's the way everything is colored. As opposed to blocks or gradients of color in most anime, it instead uses static patterns. So, it looks like all the 2D art is made out of textured and patterned fabric, colored paper, glitter, and so on. Really awesome sense of textures, although the fact that the patterns keep static while the characters move might seem a bit 'wtf' at first. :)

Nice suggestion older gohan.. I've already got that one in my collection.. anyone who's looking for a flick with really nice art and animation may want to check that out..

Yea, it's about a year old or so - and it's just coming out on DVD here now.

Oh yea, here's a link to some of the art on their official page to make this post a little less useless

(and if you were asking for shows with good plots and all, I'd still have recommended this one)

I'm liking the animation style of Black Cat. It reminds me a bit of Cossette's visuals, only without that level of surrealism. The character design is distinctive also - nobody really looks generic, not even the one-episode characters (which is nice to see for a change). Worth checking out.

I haven't seen it yet, but you can check out this (and yes, I copied and paste this from my old thread that got buried :? ).

Jigoku Shoujo (a.k.a. Hell Girl) - Official Website, WMP 30 sec. Trailer
Somewhere in the vast sea of the Internet, there's a website that can only be accessed at the stroke of midnight. Known as the Jigoku Tsushin, rumor has it that if you post a grudge there, the Jigoku Shoujo will appear and drag whoever torments you into the inferno. Very little is known about the girl - all we know for sure is that she lives with her equally enigmatic grandmother, that three magical straw dolls accompany and serve her, and that whenever a posting on the Jigoku Tsushin moves her, she becomes the Jigoku Shoujo.

Director: Takahiro Omori (Gakuen Alice, Koi Kaze)
Music: Yasuharu Takanashi (New Fist of the North Star)
Animation Production: Studio DEEN (Fruits Basket, Kenshin OVAs)
