What is Premiere FOR?

Post by SQ » Tue Nov 01, 2005 4:56 pm

I know this seems like a stupid/awkward question, but hear me out, as it's been bugging me for a while.

In the professional world, longer timelines(movies, showws) usually use Avid for editing.

Shorter timelines(commercials, etc.) usually use Final Cut Pro, or so is the trend I've seen.

Then, for home videos, you have iMac's iMovie and Windows' Windows Movie Maker.

And, for slightly more somputer-savvy people who like editing their home movies, you've got Magix and other cheap(in the money term) editing programs.

But Adobe Premiere claims it's a professional program. It claims that professionals use it, and that is why it comes with such a hefty pricetag(or just because they're Adobe).

But, if movie editors use Avid, and advertising editors use FCP.. Who the hell uses Premiere?

I mean, sure, us AMVers are using Premiere, but what "professionals" are using it? Who is making money editing by using Premiere?
Is there anybody?

In the professional field, a lot of the pro's write it off as not really being a professional piece of software. However there are some who do use it. Premiere obviously has a large following among hobbiests, as you can gather from this site.
When it comes to professionals, there is really a whole range of so-called "professionals". For example, you have professionals that edit the latest high budget feature films... then you have professionals that edit tv shows, or documentaries. You have professionals that edit local commercials, or wedding videos. Premiere might fit into any of these places, really depending on the job at hand or the preference of the person doing the editing.

But I thought even 90% of the entrepaneur(sp) homevideo businesses even used FCP or Avid?

Are there really some people who do use Premiere? That you actually know of?

well, whos says anyone /has/ to use avid or fcp... the guy who did Beyond the Clouds used after effects.

if i was to start a bussiness doing professional wedding movies, i would stick with premeire. all depends on what the company or "professional" likes.

I'm not saying they have to, I'm saying they do.
And I was wondering to myself, "well if AMVers want to become pro editors, why are we using something no pro uses?" and the question has bugged me ever since.

The massive amount of tech schools/colleges not teaching it, but rather instead teaching exclusively Avid or FCP respectively, where some schools focus on one alone(depending on what the course is geared toward: General or advertisement) and every single movie I've ever watched credits saying "edited using Avid"(or something like that).

And then news broadcasting has boxes totally seperate from everything else(Stupid Casablanca AVIO needs to burn in HELL).

With the total lack of Premiere being mentioned except for editing/video broadcasting magazines(and I don't even know who subscribes to that other than my highschool Vid. Prods. Teacher), it just seems like AMVers are the only people in the world using Premiere.

Your question would probably be better answered in the Adobe Premiere forum at Creative Cow, as thats where you will find actual professionals and not just AMV editors >.>

Oh, and as for why Avid and FCP are taught instead of Premiere, its simply because they are the most advanced industry standard software out there. Anyone can learn a piece of software, especially one thats less complex than something you already know. Its the concepts and stuff that have to be taught, not just how to use the software.
