No, whatever gave you that idea?
They're completely unrelated in anything but title.
Just so you're sure:

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

FMA is far more a drama series than FMP, there is some humor but it is far overshadowed by the dramatic plot. The first season of FMP balances the crazy humor with a background dramatic plot, the second season "FUMOFFU" dispenses with any attempt at drama and goes staight to the laughs. I haven't seen the third set but the first two are great anime of their type.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

*dies* OHM, that's too funny.
To me, at least, as a HUGE FMP fan, I think Full Metal Panic is just as dramatic as FMA. Of course, I've read the novels too.
Anyway, Stuiod Gonzo made the first season balanced. And then as a filler season, they created Fumoffu. The Second Raid is the novel's 'Day by Day' animated- it's more dramatic than humorous, but provides excellent character dynamics 'n at.
Both anime are good though.

Yes, Fullmetal Alchemist and Full Metal Panic are completely different. As for the drama of FMA not being the same as FMP I would disagree. There's a lot of drama in the third season Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid. Well, the third season is pretty much all about drama, there's not nearly the same amount of humour as in Fumoffu and the first season. Anyways, I thought both animes were great and rank among my all time favourites.
P.S. - With how FMP! TSR ended I'm crossing my fingers at the possiblity of a fourth season. I know there's an ova coming out, but I want another season .

A fourth season defintely will be coming (I think Gonzo is planning to do all of them). The novel is called 'Christmas Cruise' or something like that. It's absolutely FANTASTIC. Lots 'o drama and the usual Sousuke/AL or Kurz/Mao humor. XD
