i would recommend that you have some basic knowledge of AE before going through creative cow's tutorials.
zarxrax suggested the "total training" dvds. good stuff :up:

You get some basic stuff from total training if you buy some of the educational versions of Adobe Software. I got Adobe Audition 2.0 from Campus Tech and it came with two overview DVD-Roms that list the new features and some basic techniques.

I got lucky and found them available at my university library a few years back.

The free tuts on the cow are good too, they just aren't structured as any sort of lesson plan. There are definately some good ones for absolute beginners, the real trick is just sorting through them all and trying to find out which ones you ought to watch and in which order.
