A trouble with particular AMVs

Post by Brigid » Tue May 01, 2007 6:38 pm

A while back I downloaded a couple of AMVs by one particular user. Both of them used clips from Studio Ghibli movies. One was a very nice piece for Howl's Moving Castle.

Thing is, they didn't play right. A green bar appeared at the top of the screen and the rest of the image was in greyscale, with occassional mists of primary colors.

I mentioned this in the comments I left, thinking that the maker really should know what had happened to her videos. I got a very rude reply.

Anyway, just today I downloaded another video. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was from the same user.

I was really disappointed. It was a Tsubasa video using the song Once Upon a December, which fit perfectly with the show. Not only that, but what I could see indicated very good capture and editing.

But that same wierd problem cropped up. The green bar, the greyscale, the ghosting effect, everything.

The video is in Windows Media Video format, but this same problem appears on Windows Media Player and RealPlayer.

I suppose it's possible I'm missing a codec or something like that, but why does it only happen with videos from that one user?

The main reason I'm asking is that these look like really good videos. I just wish I could play them.

Umm... download bunches of codecs [like the K-Lite Codec Pack, any codec pack will work really, that's just the one I prefer] and stop using those media players! Instead, use one like VLC Media Player^^

Don't. That's a bad idea.

The suggestion to use VLC media player is good though. It contains decoders for everything built into the player, so you don't need any codecs.

While that's good, if you ever want to USE codecs though...you won't be able to.

That's an effect. It's supposed to look like that.

It is? I find that a little hard to believe since that green bar gets in the way so much. Not to mention the odd 'ghosts' that flitter around the screen.

Anyone have any idea how to take a screen shot in Windows Media Player or RealPlayer? Because 'print screen' isn't working for this. I'd like to show a picture of what I'm talking about.

Depends. The version of WMP you have may not have the latest versions of the WMV codec. However, you can always get the latest versions of the codec (for both WMP6.4 and WMP7+) from Microsoft's website.

It sounds exactly like a colorspace issue. For some reason your Media Player isn't playing the video back in the right colorspace, which makes it do that. Either it was somehow mismade in the production process, or your computer is screwing up the conversion to RGB due to a bad codec.
