FLCL: "Neither" - DragonCon 2007 winner, 1st place

Post by WUNETTI Productions » Mon Sep 10, 2007 10:51 pm

the description says it all (and is rather long-winded), but the shortish version goes like this: this video focuses on how screwed-up and depressing FLCL can really be.

hope you enjoy it. much thanks to whomever was responsible for it winning at DragonCon. *bows humbly* if you saw it there, please, let me know what you thought! I couldn't make it because of the schedule change.

as always, thank you for watching.

Holy shit, this is like the third drama FLCL video put out in the last two months.

Having made one of those myself, I have to see this.

/gets

EDIT: Well, I have very mixed feelings about this one. For one, I was very, very intrigued by your video description. I never really saw FLCL the way you did (I've seen it from similar perspectives though, and it's a very multi-layered show so mixed interpretations are understandable). As such, I was really excited to see how you'd tackle the concept of Haruko tearing apart Naota's life.

...I was disappointed. You didn't really dive into that at all. Throughout the video you make it seem more like Mamimi is the main character and her life is being completely shattered by Haruko's interference. This video focuses almost completely on the relationships, and none of the internal stuff, at least as far as Naota is concerned. I didn't get the feeling that his life was really getting ripped into.

Still, when it came to showing Mamimi's distress, you did an EXCELLENT job. Honestly, you succeeded in making a depressing video...but it's no more depressing than the anime was to me (and it was quite depressing to me).

So...as far as I'm concerned, this video isn't entirely original. I've seen videos take on the Haruko/Mamimi/Naota love triangle before, and do better. If you had done more to really delve into the chaos Haruko wreaks on Naota's life, this would have been far more effective - as it stands, this feels more like a typical sentimental romance FLCL video (though there aren't many of those).

A few other notes. I really think this video would have been better had you excluded some of the visually wackier scenes - even though some of them work towards your concept, the fact that the anime presents them in an off-kilter way kind of ruins the emotional impact the video could have had otherwise. Also, the video quality is kinda bad - some AviSynth filters could have really spruced the video up.

I'll give you 3.5/5. This is a pretty good video, and I'll have to rewatch it some to really catch everything and absorb it all, but I just wasn't feeling Naota's life being turned upside-down like I think you intended, and I really wish you coulda made me feel that.

hmmm.... thank you for your thoughts on this, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch it and write all that out. I'm not entirely sure how to respond - I think it's one of those things where I know what I was trying for, so that's what I see, and someone else's views on the vid will naturally be different. hell, one of my friends interpreted it as a Haruko-Mamimi pairing-type video, so I guess anything's possible. @_@ I'm also going to take a look back at what I wrote for the vid's information, and see if I can put it better... I wrote that when it was late and I was tired, so it's possible I could have said something that wasn't quite what I meant.

but yes, thank you again.
