The American Idiot Project

The American Idiot Project (Tentative Title)

Concept

American Idiot, Green Day's 7th studio album, is often classified as a rock opera or a concept album. Both refer to the idea of an album unified by a single overall theme or story. In this album's case, this would involve themes of alienation, frustration, and rebellion. It's about this idea of small-town America, and the fact that when you're there, it seems like the world, but, well, there's still a world out there. Our story revolves around the main character of the album: A guy named St. Jimmy, the Jesus of Suburbia.

Purpose

This project's intent is quite simple on the surface: We want to showcase different interpretations of this character American Idiot portrays. The different editors in this project get to interpret the character in their own way, and together, we have to craft a story. A story that begins with Jimmy content in his position of Jesus of Suburbia, and ending with him leaving for something more.

We're going to be encouraging all the editors to be doing this their own way. That's the point of this project, and the variety is what ultimately is gonna make it interesting, and give it it's soul in the process. I repeat: This is not your average Multi-Editor Project. We're aiming a bit higher this time around.

Rules

Video codec: Lagarith/HuffYUV (beta format is your choice, though)
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame rate: 29.97 fps (Note: Before you start editing, you HAVE to change the video's frame rate. You can find out how to do it here).

Note on Quality: Quality is definitely important. Fansubs SHOULD not be used, unless you have a reason to (Which, I don't think you should. Again, this needs to be justified to me)
If you are exporting, use Lagarith or HuffYUV. Both is fine, really.

Audio Exporting: Exporting the audio of your track is not necessary, unless you're paranoid about your track's synch getting messed up.

Execution

Posting For A Track

Alright, how this is gonna work. This should be read over a few times, and a dozen more to be safe. We will NOT be summarising this for anyone, nor re-explaining.

The mix, as you can see, is split into a series of letters. When you post for a track letter, you are taking every segment where that letter is mentioned in the mix. The idea is to again, do things a bit, differently. Instead of track coming one after the other, with A forgotten the second B comes on, we want to have things come together more naturally. Editors are gonna get a chance to handle different parts of the story, and this can only help them to develop their interpretation.

EDIT: This means if you pick Track A, you edit to everywhere A is mentioned, in ALL SONGS.

Now, when posting to join the project, just clearly say you're interested, and choose one track letter. Please think it over carefully. We won't be allowing track switches of any sort, and do know that editors will be carefully scrutined when considering their requests. So pick the track that speaks the most to you, and the one you think you're most able to handle.

EDIT: This means you have to say something like "I am posting for Track D". If you aren't clear, you won't be acknowledged. "

Beta Deadlines
*times below are not concrete, may be subject to change*

These will change, please remember that. These are NOT set in stone, I know people are going to be busy. I'm in no hurry to rush, I want the best.

1st beta deadline: May 1st-5th (Five days to make sure everyone gets in)
2nd beta deadline: June 1st-5th
3rd beta deadline: July 1st-5th
4th beta deadline: August 1st-5th

You may have noticed the high number of beta deadlines present in the project. It is above average, but it's for a reason: We're trying to coordinate a story here, and we have to take this step by step, to make sure what we're all creating isn't completely disjointed. The betas are also to initiate progress, but don't fret: The first isn't for a while. We actually encourage you think over your concept and how to tackle it, before you start editing. This isn't just about good editing: You want to be saying something here. It doesn't have to be obvious, but there has to be something.

The 1st beta is meant to check if you're on the right track, concept-wise. So don't do too much yet, because it might be the opposite of what we want, and you may have to scrap it if that's the case.

By the 2nd beta deadline, your timeline should be filled. If you have to privilege getting that done over polishing what you already have, by all means, do so. It will help us a lot with the direction of the project if we have a better idea of it's general direction earlier on.

Considering you WILL be working on multiple tracks, and all of them have to tie in together, make you sure you listen to the FULL mix. Make sure you know about more than the part with your favorite song. And work with your fellow editors on transitions. We're expecting them to flow as well as the audio mix themselves (This will be more emphasized on certain tracks).

Source Choice

Source choice is very important for this project, but not as important as what you do with it. We're not looking to tell a story with fighting robots, or magic powers; our theme is clearly stated, and we expect you to stay within those boundaries, no matter what anime you pick. If you want to use Evangelion, you're gonna have to justify to us why you think Shinji (Or anyone else in there) can work as Jimmy. And we will have a strong bias against Shonen anime, so you better make a good case if you wanna use one of those.

Conclusion

Most of all, have some fun, guys. This is definitely going to be an interesting project, and we're looking really forward to the variety of styles and choices in hand.

That should be it. If you are in any need of contacting us, you can just email me (`Eclipse) at DSShadow@gmail.com. You can also use PMs, although I pay more attention to my email itself. I also spend time in the IRC channel, although I keep very unpredictable hours on there so you should NOT use that as a resort of contact.

All right. Let's get this show on the road, everybody!

Coulda sworn I saw another thread with partly the same idea, a while back, but I think I might be interested.

That actually was his Thread.

so you want the Editor to cut their part from the mix on their own? I believe it would be much easier if you would just cut it and provide links to download the parts.

Oh..and wtf is this shitty website u put the link on? It gives me a time and says "you gotta wait blabla seconds till u can download!" and when the time is up, it starts from the beginning -_-

wtf is an "Extro"? :o

I can't promise anything except that I'll listen to the mix. Cause I'm curious, etc.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Hey everybody!

Well, just to say we'd planned to split the segments for you from the start. We were just a little impatient to get things started, but the track parts'll come with the .wav mix. Also, you might notice there's an audio cut or 2 that needs a bit of ironing, and that'll be taken care of as well.

Now get to listening!

PS: Extro>Outro

Umm, no. The .mp3 mix is just for listening as of now. Like Greg mentioned, the parts were originally inteded to be split and provided, and will be split when I upload the .wav version. And yes, HeartThrob, the previous thread with the same idea or what not was mine, at the time it was simply an interest gauge.

That's not different from megaupload or rapidshare.

Oh, ok thats good..but still..this weird ass senduitw/e isnt working for me.

Don't you have a server (or know someone who does) where you can upload all the files for this project?

Well, megaupload and sendspace would be fine for now for me too, I just wanna listen to the mix xD
