Don't edit using Xvid!
Okay, so what do we edit with, H.264? </joke>
Seriously here, I've been hearing about don't use Xvid all my life, but what else should we do? I tried to convert one single episode to uncompressed RGB mode. Tough luck, because I just got a 24 GB episode to edit with... In a regular 13 episode series, this would take...312 GB to edit one series? Then I get Huffyuv codec and tried that. It was a bit better, cranking out 12 GB episodes. It still doesn't seem right. For a 13 episode series, this would mean 156 GB of disk space to edit one series. For series such as Cardcaptor Sakura, I would have to have 840 GB of free disk space? This just doesn't add up.
So my question is, I get it, don't edit using Xvid. However, what is the next best alternative that doesn't require terabytes of memory? Am I doing something wrong with the conversions? (I'm using VirtualDub.) I've read most of the guides, but it's very possible that I missed one that addresses this problem. If any of you have any advice, then please feel free to post. If not, then I will have to edit using Xvid, and we all know that's bad!

The answer here is to not convert entire episodes. If you don't want to edit with .avs files, then plan your AMV beforehand and pull the specific clips you need out of the episodes as Huffyuv or Lagarith. You don't have to plan every single clip up front, but have a good idea what you're going to do. If you discover you need another clip you hadn't planned on, just go back into Vdub and convert that clip to a lossless format.
... yea ...

Ah, so lagarith is a codec? What's the average size encoded with lagarith per episode?
Thanks for the quick responses by the way.

Sorry, but since I'm a newbie, I have no clue what this means. Can you please explain?Pwolf wrote:avisynth over mpeg2 vobs

Oh, sorry, that's what I meant. 2~3 second clips come out at, like, 20~40 megs for me, so I don't think I'd want to encode whole episodes XDThe Origonal Head Hunter wrote:perhaps instead of encoding entire episodes, you should just make small individual clips.KholdStare88 wrote:Ah, so lagarith is a codec?
