"Heroes Never Die" AMV by Maki

Post by Malakai06Moonstone » Thu May 15, 2008 10:49 am

Hello, people! I'm just a n00b editor passing by. I won't take too much of your time. It seems I've been looking for constructive criticism in all the wrong places (youtube for instance...don't hate me too much -_-'') and I finally realized that this is the ideal forum concerning good ol' editorial scorning. I shall post the newest video I have; it's called "Heroes Never Die" and it is made using the Ergo Proxy anime, along with the famous Kryptonite song, performed by 3 Doors Down. It's a sentimental AMV, focusing on the troublesome relationship between the two main characters, the immigrant Vincent Law and inspector Re-l Mayar. The editing software I have used is Sony Vegas 7.0 and...well...I'll leave the rest up to you. Be as harsh as you can! Thank you very much! Enjoy!

As I said to someone else very recently, please use a host that doesn't suck. Like this site. Sendspace is going niiiiice and slow. More than twenty minutes to download this video is just excessive.

Now, the video.

You had me going nicely, for the first ten seconds. Right up to your first transition, which felt rather jarring. The second is the same. You have some really interesting timing going on in the next segment where the snare comes in, but it's inconsistent. Moving on, I'm pretty sure I'm seeing encoding artifacts in the overlay at 0:32, but I could be wrong.

Actually, I'll skip the play-by-play. I'll just grab moments that stick out to me, for one reason or another.

At 0:40, it really felt like you were kicking the pace up, and for a moment I really liked where it was going.

0:51 - subs? Come on.

The next segment up to 1:13 or so was better. I think this section handles the pacing much better, but then it falters again and the whole fight scene feels off.

1:28 just about made me roll my eyes. It just felt out of place.

...

I think you get the idea. Pacing is a major issue for you here. There are long segments where it seems like the music is doing all the work. Now, thematically, this works pretty well, and most of your effects more or less work. Well, most of your effects work after the halfway point or so.

A final thought - don't rely on the OP so much. The style is dramatically different from most of the rest of the art of Ergo Proxy.

You get 3/5. I spotted no technical flaws, aside from possible encoding artifacts at one point, so full marks for that. Your concept seems to work, so full marks there too. You can time, but from where I'm sitting you haven't figured out the technique of it yet. Work on that, and I think your next work will be amazing.

Artifacts? <_<_> who, wut, where?
I don't think I have those, at least when I play it on my PC, the image is clean, but it could very well be a downloading problem...
00:51....-______-''....craps...gomenasai...gots to put my goggles on better next time.
I see that the major problem you have encountered in my little piece of sh..err..AMV is timing; you're not the first person who told me that in some parts, the vid seems to stop its natural flow. I dunno, I think I wanted to slow things down a bit according to the song's rhythm, like starting from 03:00. It didn't work, so back to the drawing board! XD
Thank you very much for the tips, and also for the 3/5 grade. (offtopic : I always seem to be connected to number 3...it brings me luck lol XD). I might be tented to ask for your advice again on my next vid, so until then, buh-bye! *hugs*

I can tell there was a good amount of effort put into this, and it's not all that bad; however, I didn't think the song really matched the tone of the clips you chose. The clips set a dark mood, and perhaps overall your video could have been more effective, had the song been more dark, or intense. That's just my opinion though.

As for editing-wise, I liked it in the beginning, then later on it seemed as if some clips were a bit randomely placed. I liked the visuals though, that was nice.

You think the song was too...smooth/romantic/bright for the AMV? I dunno, I chose this one 'cause it sorta describes perfectly the Re-l - Vincent relationship, as if it was created for them XD.
That's...a bit...crappy LoL XD
