Virtualdub choosing the wrong clips

So this has been happening to me for a while now, but it only juts occurred to me to ask about it.

I've been having a problem getting correct clips out of VirtualDub. Like, I'll put an episode into VDub and decide to crop out an action clip. I'll go frame by frame to decide what I want and then render, but when it spits the file out, it's not the scene I chose, but a scene a few seconds BEFORE what I chose. Sometimes after I render it will still show the frame I actually stopped at on the Virtualdub screen, but sometimes it will show the last frame of what it actually gave me.

I think it might be a problem with the episodes I am using, since I never had a problem like this before, but I also don't have any other anime handy to try out.

The files I am working with are XVID avi, which I haven't had a problem with before.

You need to cut at keyframes. Use the buttons with the keys on them to seek to keyframes.

It means you're trying to cut in the middle of a GOP, and VirtualDub does not let you do that. It automatically will cut from the beginning of the first GOP selected.

Also, if the Xvid file has B-frames enabled, then the tracking is not accurate to what you see on screen. There is no way to fix this except for using AviSynth to load them (which will also fix the GOP issue), preferably with a frame-accurate source filter like FFmpegSource - 1.21 or 2.00 - or DSS2.
