ZeWrestler and Iserlohn's Guide to Opinions - Part 5

Good Opinions

Good opinions. The thing that creators want to get. Good opinions don't have to be postive. What makes a good opinion good, is that it give details of how they can improve their video, or explain whats good about thier video. These opinions are examples of good ones that were found on the org.

 Good

This is the funniest thing this side of OtakuVengeance's Pokémon tribute. It's original, I just can't figure out why no one thought of it before! Is there an 11 setting for originality?

Makes Sailor Moon tolerable. (Yes, Hell has frozen over.)

Makes Jerry Springer tolerable. (Twice.)

And of course, it's a Weird Al song, which is always a plus!

Aside from that, there are the more mundane things like the seriously beautiful integration of Springer and Senshi footage and the hilarious gags the author has thrown in.

Half of the thing is inside jokes which only a devoted Senshi lover or Senshi hater will get.

 Bad

Um... Don't let small children near this. There are some questionable words in the song that would have my fundamentalist neighbors up in arms. Then again, it's a cross between Jerry Springer and a show where characters change their gender more often than their underwear, (wait a minute...) so you probably weren't going to show it to kids anyway.

It is my feeling that 99.93456% of all anime characters in fact belong on Springer, and now that one person has done it, everyone will be doing it to all their angsty, psycho anime heros and heroines. But the Sailors definitely belong there the most, so it's only right that they were there first!

Half of the thing is inside jokes which only a devoted Senshi lover or Senshi hater will get.

 General

I hate Sailor Moon.

Let's clear that up. I hate it. The only things I hate more than Sailor Moon are rapists and the Wheel of Time novels... and I'm not sure about the Wheel of Time novels. That said, Doki-Doki Productions has done the impossible: They have made something with Sailor Moon that not only can I tolerate... I love it! This is just too perfect! Yes, they all belong on Springer! Every last one of their gender-indeterminate, sexually-liberated, religiously-confused butts (or equivalent alien body part) belongs on that stage. The laughs in this song just don't stop. The synergy is incredible... Neither the song nor the material would be as good without the other backing it up, thanks to the author's incredible knack for pulling out laughs.

Watch it! Again! And again! Gosh I love this video. Believe me, the song WILL get stuck in your head, and it's just so funny, you can watch it over and over and keep laughing!

This is a good opinion. The opinioner is honest and he admits that he doesn't like the anime to begin with. But, he still gives it a good opinion by saying what is good and bad.

i'm not sure what you were trying to do with your little audio bits from the episodes, but they didn't add to the audio quality. a nice idea, but poorly executed.

i really am looking for something else that's good to say about this. you're ballsy for doing a 6.5 minute video (which would get DQ'ed from any con just for length) but you can do a lot more with something provocative and shocking in 2 min (see my ce^kx video if you're old enough to be legal) than just dragging out a fight for this long.

as far as timing goes, it's on for the most part, but the timing effects you're using have gotten really old really fast. you're letting some of your clips run a few extra frames as well.

 Bad

nothing's happinging for the first minute or two of this video. it looks like the standard no-edit video. the quailty of the source is also highly degraded.

leaving your name and email up for the entire video is annoying, as is your 30 second bumper on either end. what a waste of 10 megs and an extra 10 min to download on my t3...i'd hate to think of what someone who got this on a 56k was doing.

a friend of mine who's a film major told me a secret: if all you do is sync to beats, rhythms, or every kind of other sound in a piece, your vid will get really old really fast. it's 3 minutes and i'm bored, so let's talk about creativity.

it's rather lacking. if it wasn't for the fact that i know dbz fights can go on for 10 episodes, this probably was edited down out of something.

however it's something we've all seen before. at least now i feel justified not having to watch the episodes after the tournament ends and we end the great saiyaman arc...

you could have ended this at least twice now and been fine. there's something to be said for editing a song down.

do you REALLY need to have your extra video info up for 45 seconds? especially when your name's already on the screen?

 General

This is NOT one of the greats. It's really unimpressive, to be honest. However, it's also not as horrid as everyone else makes it out to be. Maybe if you had a better idea and a lower ego on the boards, people who aren't immediate friends would start to take your work more seriously.

notes on the numbers....

Originality - nonexistent. the only reason you didn't get a 1 is because you did it for as long as you did. then again, cutting out bumpers you're down to about 5.5 min. i have seen dbz fight videos that long. ::changes number appropriately::

video - this is off tapes of more than 2 or 3 gens. it's watchable, but your encoding didn't help it either. below average, but not by much.

audio - at least the sound's good.

action/editing - it's not bad, but your time a blast to a sound effect bit made it very uninteresting.

digital - what digital? n/a

effort - it's hard to tell how much work you really put into this. i know i've seen clips of a bunch of that floating around on the net, so it's possible you didn't even have to get tapes at all and just did a little trimming off the edges. still, you DID do it for 5.5 min...

re-viewable - no way am i sitting through this again. got way bored before finishing, so i stopped caring enough to do a timecoded error list, so it gets a 3 instead of a 4 (which is my norm.)

overall - the math says around 3.5, and i'm rounding down. this was just flat and unimpressive.

you've definately got potential, but you need refinement and some time off to think of fresh ideas.

good luck.

This opinion is good because the opinioner does his best to comment about every aspect of the video, in order to find what is good and bad about it, so the creator may improve the video. He also gives a breakdown of the score at the end of the video so that the creator knows how the opinion was scored. It also shows that just because a opinion is negative it still proves helpful.

 Good

The video opens up with the song playing and a quick introduction. I love how as soon as that is over you have the clip of the knight doing something that fires an energy beam. That beam matches up good with the music playing.

The face that I hold inside is a was chosen well with Edea close to the screen and Riona towards the back of it. Following it up with all the other faces was good.

The action that was chosen during the first set of lyrics was chosen well, I especially like the part when it get to face beneath my skin and it shows him slashing Sepher's face with the gunblade. Squal driven during the parade had a lot of shots of his face which matched up with the face lyrics again. Edea shooting her Ice limit attack at Squal was matched up really well with the music.

"Whirl wind inside of my head" at 1:32 is good, but could have been chosen better, I know theres a lot of magic that involves wind and in FF8 theres the guardian forse whose attack invovles a whirl wind.

1:53-2:05 with the gunblade fight went well with the music. That and you had the constant swiching from one scene to another during the drum beats which made a cool effect.

The whole thing with cloud during the sun goes down was different. I like it. lol

The ending of the video showing everyone from FF7 with the bright light was a good idea. Ending of coarse with Riona hugging Squal was a good ending for this video.

 Bad

Bad parts were minimal in this vid. Most things in this vid were good. A few scenes which I would have chosen differently (its like a whirl wind being one of them), but most of them were good. I can't find that much wrong with this vid.

 General

This is a great video. Here is a the breakdown of what I thought about it.

Originality: This is a decent FF8 vid. I like the way you put it to music.

Capture: Mostly clear, but it could have been a bit better.

Sound: The sound was right on the mark. Sounded crystal clear.

Action Sync: you had good action syncing during this vid. The best scene that come to mind is during that gunblade fight where you had the fighting, then you changed scenes durning the drum beats.

Effort: Obviously you put a lot of effort into this vid. Or else you wouldn't get the timing as good as you did for the certain parts.

Overall: I like this vid. I think you put a lot of work into it and it shows. I hope your future vids are like this.

Re-view: To much of something is a bad thing. I like the vid, but I don't want to watch it often so that it stays good in my mind.

I hope to see more vids from you in the future that are as good or better then this.

This opinion is a good one because of many things. Like the last opinion I should you, this opinioner also choices to give a breakdown of how he scored to help the creator understand how the video was scored. Although, not required, I like it when a opinioner uses this because it is extremely helpful for the creator so that they can improve the video. This opinioner also gives examples in the video of what is good or not and gives the times that they occur in. That way, the creator can go back to the video and improve the problem if there was something wrong.

Looks nice. I can't tell if there was supposed to be a sound effect at 0:29 but if there was it was well synched, and if not i wanted one there in my head.

1:03 - the fast bits synched well

most of the video synchs well actually.

Capture would've been a higher score but I noticed some digital artifacts. Sound got a lower grade because I had trouble hearing it with the audio turned up, but it wasn't overcompressed or anything. Action well done.

digital effects were used effectively, but I prefer straight cuts to fades, and so there were a few more than i personally like, but they were all well done.

I think you worked hard on this, so a good effort mark...debated between an 8 and a 9, but the overall feeling of the vid put me closer to 8.

the anime and the music were a good choice.

 Bad

0:52 on the explosion, I'm not sure if these are pixels or there was somethign there, but it's just a couple frames and it doesn't look right.

the audio level on this is really low. i had to crank my system up (and was scared to hell when ICQ went off)

0:54 - the horses turn the corner during the fade and it looks conflicting (perhaps slow down teh chase so it's continuous?)

1:24-1:38 - pixels (and i'm watching this windowed)

around 2:14 when the audio gets low (i couldn't actually hear it) a fade to another scene seems like an odd choice, a fade to black may've been better.

there's more than a few spoilers in this video if i remember the movie correctly.

 General

Being honest up front, I hated the esca movie, and my bias may be showing in the opinion (I type this as I'm finishing the download.) Still, the fair person in me says to give it a chance anyways.

K, watched it now. The comments speak for themselves really. Technically this is a really well made video. I'm having a lot of trouble assigning a grade for Originality though, because of what you said in your notes - it's mistakable for the trailer. Making a trailer video isn't really new, even if it is with a title that people haven't used before, so my feeling is to go with a lower mark.

Overall: The math points to a 7.25ish, which isn't bad. Sorry to say but I wasn't blown away, and nothing really cool stood out to me, and since those are the bumping up requirements a 7 is what ya get.

Another long opinion to look at. This opinion is nice because it has timecoded commentary included (it tells you exactly where the commented item is at for easy checking.) It also shows how a technically well made video can earn high marks in that area but low marks in others.

Basically:

  • Be detailed. If you don't say what's wrong it's harder to fix it in future works.

  • Humor can be a double edged sword.

  • Talk about both the good and the bad.

  • Back up your claims. This goes with being detailed.

  • Admit your biases up front. If you say right off that you don't like Sailor Moon, Utena, DBZ, whatever, be honest as it will help put your opinion in perspective (providing you follow the above hints.)
