JOURNAL: Dierin

  • forget to turn the earth so both sides get their share of darkness and of light 2001-12-14 18:04:36 Damn finals. No progress on videos since the last entry here, although as usual the ideas are flooding in... I'm grasping at straws to procrastinate in every way possible, which is why I'm posting this; there are a couple of papers and a veritable shitload of studying between me and next Tuesday afternoon, and I can't say that I'm looking foreward to it.

Japan and amnesia in regard to its war debt my foot.

So the question of the day: Is there a way to reply to these journal entries, or send private messages to other memeber of the community here at AMV.org? I see the occasional reference to correspondence in other people's entries, and I'm curious. It would be sorta cool to have that additional communication if it's available.

I'm REALLY, honestly meaning to get cracking on a new music video. Unfortunately the massive hard drive wipe I did in preparation for MacCon has already been refilled (rather alarmingly, I might add), so there is much burning between myself and the necessary space for video files on the ol' machine. Ahh, for a new, spick'n'span hard drive... and a new processor, monitor, video card...
  • Closer 2001-11-11 20:35:55 I've continued correspondence with the bass player from BTE, and it looks like he's interested in me doing a video to the title track of "Closer." After listening to it a few times again I realized that it would actually work quite well with Ah! My Goddess; I'm debating whether to get started right away or wait until the region 1 release of the movie on the 25th. It would be nice to have something to hand to the guys in person on the 19th at their show here, so maybe I'll opt to get a draft done sooner than later. Man, it's hard to actually make myself go through the paces and put a video together, now that I sit down to do it... Wonder if anyone has any tips in this department.
  • Ack!! Dag burn it! 2001-11-02 16:17:22 So I come here to do a little surreptitious checkup on journaling activity, only to find that not one but TWO other individuals (whos' work I greatly admire, by the way) have plans for Phish videos in the works. All I can say is that I hope I don't end up having to stack mine against theirs, as I have a pretty good idea who will end up looking the fool... I know I'm in the clear where EK is concerned, but I'm not sure about Phade. Guess we'll see what happens, yo.

Still haven't heard back from the alleged BTE bassist; apparently they're on tour now, though, so I guess I shouldn't expect a quick response. Ah well. Hopefully this weekend will be a productive one...
  • My quota of bizarreness for the semester is now filled. 2001-10-31 20:20:06 So I went to check my email yesterday afternoon, and I had a message with the topic "Killer Inside." Being the vain bastard that I am I immediately clicked on it, and my jaw nearly dislocated and landed in a puddle of goo at my feet. The email was from the bassist of Better Than Ezra (or someone claiming to be him), complimenting me on the video and wondering if I would be interested in doing one for a song from their new album.

You're probably a bit incredulous at this point- goodness knows I am; I read the email over quite a few times, and nothing jumped out at me as obviously fraudulent. It wasn't sent from the address listed on the band's official site, but then I would hardly think he would use that one for personal business. He seemed articulate enough and used all the right intonations of someone who is who he's claiming to be; but more to the point, who the hell would pull a bizarre prank like that?

I'm not assuming that it's legit right off the bat, but I sent him a reply last night with a few questions that should set my mind at ease. I also went out and picked up their new album, to see if anything sounded viable for a video; I wouldn't say it's as good as their first (that I pulled "Killer" from), but a few tracks seem promising. I'm still sorta reeling from the possible implications of this, but I'm not really expecting anything to come of it. In any case, it's pretty cool that someone from the band (or masquerading as such) digs the video, and didn't slap me with a copyright lawsuit right off the bat instead of a compliment.

In other news, I'm chugging along slowly but steadily on the Waste and Makisupa videos; I have the perfect clip to kick off Waste, and even one to follow it up, but I'm either going to have to mine my club's collection extensively or increase my own (HA! in my current financial state?) to get enough material to fit what I see in my head. I think the key phrase describing what I'm trying to achieve in Waste is "moments of stillness." Tranquility might be a better word; points where the characters are happy and at ease, if only for a moment, in their turbulent worlds.

Anyway, I gotta run here- Ghost in the Shell is showing tonight at 7:30 for my "Japanimation and Manga" class, and the prof doesn't like it when we're late...
  • now it is your turn to pick: who is you what? 2001-10-28 18:23:02 Hello, wide world of anime music videos! I was suddenly inspired to take advantage of the journalistic capabilities here, as I'm ramping up production on a couple of videos for the first time in a long while. I don't know about anyone else, but I've noted a marked derth of videos done to Phish, and I intend to fix that. The fact that they usually play 15-minute long songs aside, and the fact that their lyrics are cryptic at best and nonsensensical at worst notwithstanding, and regardless of the fact that they don't have heavy "beats," I'm gonna plough through with this and see what happens.

The first project I'm tackling is a Bebop video to the Phish tune "Makisupa Policeman," as performed by The Wailers (of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame). This has the advantage of sounding considerably more reggae than Phish ever could, and being a studio recording (Phish never recorded Makisupa in the studio). I'm going for a pretty humorous effect here, working with Mushroom Samba and incorporating clips from Bohemian Rhapsody and a few other eps. to create the illusion that the crew of the Bebop is a bunch of happy-go-lucky stoners. To my knowledge there hasn't been a Bebop vid yet that tackles this aspect of the series, and after the sappy "For Julia" I think this should be a refreshing change.

The second vid I'm starting will be composed of clips from various shows, to the song "Waste" off Phish's "Billy Breathes" album. This one of their most heartfelt, emotional songs, and is pretty unique (for Phish) in that it's basically a straightforward rock ballad. This will be a more long-range project, because I really want to do it right; it's a labor of love, so to speak.

Hrm. That was fun; maybe I'll stop by and write here again as things progress. Still ripping footage; haven't even booted Premiere yet, so it'll be a bit before there's anything substantive to report.

    Dave out.
