When you're actually working on a serious lip synch segment, it's REALLY hard to tell how it'll come off to someone else. Most of my struggles with Sappy Self-Indulgence were due to that reason. I still heard a lot of laughter during parts I intended to be serious.
I think the best way would be to try and keep it low key -- subtle facial expressions, not-too-wide-open mouths, etc. If the character looks like he's yelling ardently, it's more likely to go over-the-top into humorous. -
