Originality
2004-01-15 02:40:51
Originality refers to being the first of its kind, it wasn't copied from anything or immitated from anything else.
Yet in our little AMV world originality seems to have a slightly warped meaning, if I use a particular band for my music selection that is used alot by others it isn't original even if one is not aware of the others work.
Another way of looking at it is this, if I were to sculpt a statue whose image was derived completely from my imagination it would not be original because other people have sculpted statues before me, even though those statues could be of a different subject or material.
It saddens me to think of all of the great AMV ideas that must go to waste when the artist decides not to create his or her AMV based on how often that Anime or music has been used.
We seem to have missed a very valuable aspect of our works, something that makes all or nearly all of our works original. An AMV does not simply consist of video clips put to music with effects popped in to improve upon it, there is a much more powerful force, a more important element in each and every AMV we envision. That element is human it is the heart and soul, the perspective we place upon our material, the vision and direction we choose to follow as we sculpt our videos.
Its been done too many times before..., what a stupid comment! Each of those videos is unique, is original because its creator is.
I beg of all who read this, do not abandon a great inspiration because "It has been done before..." or "It has been overused..."
Stay true to your own vision because no matter what they tell you....that vision is as unique and as original as you are.

What is it really that makes a good AMV?
2003-12-12 00:21:42
I made a few videos before ever checking out an online community like this. I generally like the videos I have made, I have learned alot from each passing video. I try to have a general story or feeling that is meaningful to me behind each video.
Now I have come here and I read the forums and see what many others are setting up in their vids; fast and flashy effects reign supreme they seem to be what creators are gunning for, the source material is secondary it merely provides a backdrop for the effects.
Have I missed the point of AMVs entirely?
Is it all about the effects?
I don't seem to be entirely alone, there do seem to be a few others that look upon AMVs as I do. Loveable Neko Kyou's Kyou Dedication was simple, it contained little to no effects what so ever. Yet, I found it to be emotionally pleasing, it gifted me with an emotional link to the character in the video (I've never even seen the anime, though its now on my list) this is something flashy effects have never done for me. Watching Arigatomyna's Wondering fills me with a feeling of tranquility even though I usually prefer a much faster song. Undoubtably many would look at the simple styles of these videos and discount them immediately but maybe what you see isn't so important as how it makes you feel.
Maybe its time we stopped looking where to add the effects and step back, and ask ourselves if there isn't more heart in carefully chosen scenes to emotion provoking music than in lens flares and screen mattes.
Maybe our videos should reflect whats inside, what we feel...and not whats in our computers and what our software can do.
I don't ask you to agree with me, merely ponder these thoughts and wonder...
