JOURNAL: FirestormXIII (Robert X. Hill-Williams)

  • 2003-10-06 22:39:17 A while ago on the forums, I made the comment that Inu Yasha and Evanescene were the new Linkin Ball Z. I was absolutely mistaken...

The new Linkin Ball Z is most definitely Evanescence and Final Fantasy :|
  • What the CRAP?! 2003-09-04 22:32:34 Wow, livejournal looks quite a bit different now O_O
  • By the by... 2003-08-23 15:07:15 I'm not trying to say anyone should be restricted from uploading, or listing in the database. I think we all know what Phade's intent was from having the Donut, and even creating a database in the first place. That's not in question here. In fact, there are no questions, it's simply what 'is'.

Meh, I haven't meant to come off as being 733T or anything in my last entries, but dammit if I can't complain every once and a while about things I can't change =P

    Anyway...

Me=Done with this thread of 'discussion'
  • Re: Wonka, trythil, Tom The Fish, and everyone else 2003-08-23 13:35:57 It's odd, when I read Wonka's post, I really did (and still do) feel like he was speaking the truth about what's happening on the Org since the Donut hit.
Thing is, I also feel like trythil, Tom_The_Fish, and anyone else who wrote up an opposing viewpoint, were also speaking the truth.

As with so much, real life is stranger than fiction, and much is the same here. Truth is, both sides are right. At least, that's the way I feel about it. On one hand, I can understand Wonka's distress about what feels like a *massive* influx of 'teh not good' or even 'teh not decent' videos here.

Yes, I understand some of these people are just starting out, but I check out the New Vid on The Block section quite a bit (at least once every day) and more often than not I see people making their 7th or 8th video.; and they look every bit the same as their first one. Next to zero improvement in style, originality, timing, or video or audio quality. And the sad part is that I see it quite a bit more than what I believe would be normal.
There's nothing wrong with not having a complete and total grasp on all things AMV. I didn't when I started, and I still don't. I'm still learning.

But the difference is that some of these people don't seem to be learning anything, even on their own. Long before I found the org I was improving on myself. Because I was *Thinking* for myself. I doubt anyone thinks of making AMVs as some type of job, or something they *have* to do. But isn't the point of having a hobby to learn more things about it and have fun with it?
Having fun is all well and good, but isn't it kind of pointless to be doing this without being enriched by it in some way?
And I guess that's ultimately where I identify with what Wonka was saying. It's not the fact that there's crappy videos out there. (Hell, I put mine on the Donut. Because they're mine, and crappy or not, it's all a part of my progression.) It's the fact that a lot of the crappy videos never seem to get better. Yes, you get a 'Deluge' every blue moon, but the ratio on that is like 1 out of every 100 videos (if not more).

As I said in my last entry, the Donut is not a bad idea. But with every positive there's usually a negative, and this is no exception. I think that the things Wonka was griping about have always been around. It's just that now they're right in front of our face and we can actually see them, and it puts a new light on things.
It's not gonna stop me from improving myself, and trying to make better videos though.

I just think that we all have 'old curmudgeon' moments. The night where Wonka wrote his entry just happened to be one of them for me. I don't think 'Omg all hope is lost in this. Save yourselves from D00m!', but at the same time I'm very realistic about what I see here.

    Realistic, but hopeful. ;-)
  • Amen... 2003-08-21 22:14:31 *Claps for Wonka's post*

That hit me right in the heart. There's just so much about that that's true.

And the worst part of it, is that I really do see the Donut as being a huge part of the problem. It's sad, because the idea of the donut isn't a bad one. What's sad is what people waste bandwidth putting onto the Donut. Just look at the new vid on the block section if you don't believe me.

I can't remember the last time I checked that section out and found a good video, or even one with something more written in the creator comments than 'My NaRuTo vid k|cks @ss!!1!' (actual comments have been changed to protect the useless)
