JOURNAL: Paul Kievits (Paul Kievits)

  • 2002-08-18 06:38:05 Was a little too woozy (damn booze) to do any typing yesterday so again, a belated entry. You know the 6 hours of editing I planned on doing, well it turned into 10 minutes of editing, 30 minutes of cussing and 30 minutes of problem solving (thanks Ian ^_^). For some odd reason Premiere decides to crash everytime I make a clip disolve to black (via cross disolve) and have the "Gaussian shapen" filter added. So I can't even do that if I want, now I have to find a way around that -_-. Thanks to Premiere for inhibiting my creative process. Probably won't get a lot of editing done today either, since I'm going to my grandmothers birthday. Bugger this video is going slow.

Well I also went to a party yesterday and consumed a lot of beer, that was fun seeing my soccer team again.

In music I downloaded some Rachmaninov yesterday since it was the influence for a lot of Muse's music and I must say it's pretty good. I've never really gotten into classic before but I liked this.

In movies I watched "Oh brother where aret thou" which was funny enough, not the absolute best movie ever, but an enjoyable thing to watch in the morning.

I think that'll be all for now.
  • 2002-08-17 07:27:38 Ian: Yeah that was something that kind of puzzeled me. In the shot there is obviously no-one in the room when he says "rosebud". Hadn't heard of the theory before, but it does give a new way to watch the movie. That's what I love about movies like this ... they're open to interpritation ^_^.
  • Citizen disturbed 2002-08-17 05:52:44 I wanted to update yesterday, but my computer has been having problems ever since last night, I've had this before and it's rather agitating. The problem is, my computer decides to shut down on arbitrary moments. I THINK the cause is my keyboard (which has an off button on it). My trick to beat it (while I'm typing here) and to establish if it's really my keyboard was to start up notepad and type something. Then when my PC wants to shutdown it asks if I want to save my work and I hit cancel. By then my keyboard had died down and I trned off the ability to turn my PC off via keyboard, lets hope that sticks.

Anyway, what can I say about yesterday? Well not much, I got some more work done on my site (slowly but certainly) I also read the days edition of Angst Tech. (not Angst inc. as I said yesterday). I also played a soccer manager for quite some time and thus didn't get to editing. Furthermore I watched the second episode of Excel saga, funny stuff that "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" lol. Also watched the last hour of Citizen Kane and I must agree with the critics, what a bloody brilliant movie! Character development is rich and there are several scenes I'll never forget (The marriage comparison is grand). The ending is open to interpritation (which are always my favorite endings in movies), this is how I figured it:

    *Spoiler Warning*
The reporter at the end says: "Maybe it's something he gained or lost during his life" (reffering to his dieing words "Rosebud"). Then you see his sleigh (sp?) burning. That's what Rosebud meant, his sleigh. As he is taken away from his parents you see his sleigh lying in the snow getting covered by snow and gradually dissapearing from view. Then with his new "father" he gets a new sleigh (I guess with rosebud on it). Now somewhere in the middle of the film Kane says "I could have been a great man, if I didn't have as much money". So the way I see it he lost his chance to be a great man and to live a normal life due to his being sold by his mother. The new sleigh (with rosebud on it) symbolises this.

That's what I thought. But then again it's open to interpritation...
    *End of spoiler warning*

Today I'm gonna try to get 6 straight hours of editing down to make up for lost time.

BTW. Whilst I was typing this my computer tried to shut down atleast a dozen times, so my solution didn't work -_-
  • Daily rants 2002-08-15 19:20:32 I finally started watching Citizen Kane today, I got to 54 minutes, meaning I have an hour left (somehow I am unable to watch anything the whole way through). Up until now it's intreguing I must say, this whole "rosebud" thing gives a detective-twist to the story. I'll have to wacth more to conlcude anything, I'll get you my final thoughts tommorow. I also watched the first episode of Excel saga and all I can say is O.O . That is very very weird stuff ... blatant hitler remarks, vomitting, the good conscience killing the bad conscience and getting arrested. Lovely sillyness.

Furthermore the progress on my internship moves along slowly but gradualy, I'll know more the end of next week (getting kind of tight with my school though).

The site I'm working on is still progressing slow as shit in a funnel. I got almost nothing done today because some function is giving me a hard time, I'll try more tommorow.

I also went to play soccer again today, my condition is ok-ish+ but my form is really lacking. Several passes were good and arrived and I had a few good offensive moves but my defense is a small atrocity, I have to get training before the 7th (begin of the leauge).

On the AMV front I got some stuff done today, I got up to 26 seconds which is a rather critical mark since I need to change styles drastically, that'll be a small drama tommorow. My motivation has incresed drastically though so I should get ample done (to bad my system is a shitty rust-bucket or I might get more done faster). Of what I have so far I'm not sure about a little guitar sound in the background (streches for about 5-10 seconds) ... Should I add an effect? Shouldn't I? Which effect should I add? I'll get back to that when I'm tweaking the video though since it's rather a small deal. I also have the start of the "lyrics" which is rather inconspicuos so I'm not quite sure if I'll remain using the effect I had so far, but I'll see about that again later aswell. I hope to get up to 30 seconds tommorow since I do have that con deadline nagging at my head (I may also try to make a con in england to see how I fare there).

I am now also totally adicted to angst inc. (http://www.inktank.com/AT/) great computer related comedy ^_^.

One last thing, yesterday night (whilst I was slumbering) someone added me to their MSN list (a girl with the nickname of papilia). I am guessing she came by my email adress via this place (She's into anime and video editing ... so duh). Anyway if you're reading this, we live in competely different time zones so you may not see me online a lot. If you are reading this just drop me a mail or something ^^.

Last but not least ... Ian, enjoy!
  • Goat in a shell 2002-08-14 19:11:57 I finished watching Ghost in the Shell today, mixed feelings about it though. One part liked the rather easy to follow story and the high-end animation. While the other part disliked some plot sections (what's section 6 or 9? I still don't know) and the fact that there never was any real speeding up in the plot, just one monotone tempo. I also disliked the shallowness of the puppetmasters roll blegh. I added it to the ninth place in my top 10 list (also dropping DBZ from 6 to ten) because I found it to be more enjoyable than Blue sub no. 6.

REMINDER TO SELF: GET OFF YOUR LAZY ASS AND WATCH CITIZEN CANE TOMMOROW.

    I keep forgetting so there's a reminder.

What else did I do today? Not much, very anti-productive day. Sent out several emails, collected vacation foto's (which were ok-ish too much people in it) and shopped for some pants (came up blank the only H&m here is for women only -_-).

On the site part, I finished the layout for a page making that perfect and I have the layout for another screen which now needs functionality. I think that in a good 2 weeks the site should be done.

Last but not least, my video: Vertigo. I touched up what I did yesterday and I added 3 seconds (which need little touching up). I have some background noises of which I'm not sure what to do with. I could add some kind of distortion or something, but I'm not sure if that'll disturb the flow (gah the pain of creativity). Anyway in 2 seconds (at the 25 second mark) I'll be running into new unchartered video editing dillema's. I have to come up with an effect that'll add to the first obvious song part ("lyrics") and keeps the flow underneath well provided ... I'll see that tommorow though.

I'm going to bed now ... nighty night
