  • Wham, bam, thank you m'am 2002-06-06 12:40:02 Bowler - Re: Metropolis - guess you don't remember the old Popeye black & whites where they used dioramas as backgrounds. I think the last time this worked halfway well was the cave of wonders stuff in Aladdin - in this case, I think it was intentional - there were too many other cimematic "cliches" (the vignette transitions, some of the blocking...) from the silent film era for me to think otherwise.

Pity. Some of the BEST artwork is at the end. It's decadence in the truest sense of the word.

Amizadai - We have yet to see Spiderman. Yeah, it sucks.

EK - the mp3s are greatly appreciated this morning.

BECAUSE....(hang onto your ass, Fred) --

Younger brother is now up for surgery - nothing too serious, but will be off work for six weeks. Giving him Azure Dreams for his convalescence. He's at the bottom of the triage list, though --

    BECAUSE...

Mom looks to have a ruptured disk in her back (surprise, surprise) - gee, that would explain the pain she's been in since rehab after her heart attack that has just about reached the point of round the clock narcotics. She finally went in for an MRI and myelogram. Ya think? But wait, there's more.

    BECAUSE...

Sis is back in emergency surgery this morning with another retinal tear. Not unexpected (not to me, anyway) - once a problem exists, it tends to spread a bit and can worsen before resolving. The bitch now is they have all but written off regaining useable sight and are now working on keeping the eye itself. Another vitrectomy, another round of waiting to see if it will hold...and why this has occurred, nobody will say. Am I involved in any way? Nope.

She went in at 6:00 this morning - the longer I don't hear back, the better - if there's nothing to do, they'll go in, see and close quickly and it's over in three hours. It's 9:30 now. Mom's running the calling tree and would be in to look after the kids except she had this lovely set of tests yesterday, etc.

And now she wonders if being more aggressive earlier would have prevented some of this.

Being right sucks if this is what you get for it.

If I get the chance to pick this apart over wine with Sis, something has to be said about avoidance under fear - denial, I guess is the correct term. What the heck kept her from saying anything about this?

Well, if you wish to deny and be afraid, this is how much it costs. I'm death on it.

...fear is the little death...fear is the mind killer...I shall not be afraid...

The only ones left are older brother and I. I'm sure he's looking around to see where it's going to come from...my money is on Grandma, but I could get hit by a truck with all the time I spend on the road.

And trying to plan on when to be out of the country inside of the next 90 days just got impossible. Putting it all on hold for the next 14 days.

    SHIT.

And I want to do what with my DVDs?
  • Feed, water, repeat 2002-06-05 18:51:50 I'm beginning to have little house of dreams thoughts again.

Like a house with more than two bedrooms, and a kitchen that you can't see into when you open the front door. A yard...with grass AND rosebushes.

My bathroom ceiling still looks like ass...stay tuned. *sigh*

Tennessee was good, thanks for asking - but if the mind fucks don't stop coming, I really will think I have my head up my ass -- while I'm gone, the programming team implements a NASTY change that just whacks my part of the data supply chain past breakfast and I get the call on the cellphone Saturday morning to try and "walk" someone through a huge mapping change.

They quickly came to the conclusion it was not a Good Idea. But the fact they made the change, implemented and did not think to tell me - does this ring a bell? Have a got a sign on my back that says "ignore me?"

*shakes head* My imagination. But guess who is going to cross train two people to cover for me from now on. Ya think?

Guess who is #33 on the indie charts this week? And something like #21 on the mainstream charts with another album? And two more different albums would be hard to recall...yeah, it's that embarrassing jones of mine, Barry Manilow. Concord released a UK pressing with two more cuts on the Mayflower album this month - that's what popped it back onto the indie chart, I'm sure. Hint: buy the Mayflower album, skip the Ultimate.

With this next payperiod, I begin another 401K plan. Jim starts a permanent job with Kaiser Permanente - and I hope, really hope - I get to see some progress on shortening my commute.

Bowler - thanks for the .mp3.

EK- Tonight's news - raped by Flipper! Film at eleven!

    *smarf*
  • Not a single shred of anime in sight 2002-06-04 17:44:54 No Pokemon backpacks, no kitty porn t-shirts...nothing. Not even spiky hair.

You would have thought there wasn't a single anime convention in town.

Flew into DFW...got off, walked through the airport from terminal A to terminal C and got onto another equally nice airplane and went to Knoxville. Absolutely effortless. (Except for the freaking ass walk with laptop on one shoulder and my worldy possession slung over the other one....)

Not a single, feeble 'wai' to be heard.

Coming back, we were pleased to hear that from here on out, you folks are lucky to have Jim and Bob, the Marine fighter pilot and the Air Force Reservist flying yer plane tahday...and folks, this here is a Air Marshall flight, so you just sit right in and sit a spell, and don't worry 'bout a thing. We got ya covered.

    Oh, my.

But I slept like a baby.

  • In case anyone wants to shock the crap out of Jim -- 2002-05-30 19:12:53 We will be on flight 1752 from Ontario, landing in Dallas at 7:20 PM. We then have to change planes and head off to Knoxville at 8:40 from what looks like another terminal. All flights are American Airlines and while I know they won't allow people to meet us at the gate, if you want to stand outside the security checkpoint and shout "WAI" at us as we go past....

Suffice it to say, it will be *almost* as good as attending Akon.
  • Spring Fever/Summer Wishes 2002-05-29 10:52:26 Bowler - Golf: 1.) "A beautiful walk in the park spoiled by a little white ball." 2.) "Another tin pail you put money into."

I don't play or even attempt to play a game unless I can lose spectacularly with some grace. Get mad? Yeah, I think at 15, anything would be aggravating enough to quit playing. My problem is, I can't get anyone to play with me. Magdael Rules at the minature golf course often provides more fun with less stress - don't keep score. At all. Throw the card away and return the pencil.

Competition is overrated. There will always be someone better -and worse - at it. If you want that fact proven, go enter a contest. If that is what you're after, you'll get your fill.

I like the corollary - always do your best. In the end, who knows better? If you did the very best you knew how, who can complain?

I think I need to get to the batting cages and see if I can hit the ball yet.

EK is getting self-conscious. Stop it. You're fine. Joseph Palmer noted that a link to his site got mentioned in my LJ - and put a link to my journal on his main page. If I can live through that kind of exposure, nothing you've done lately is fatal. Far from it.

    Kittens are *cute.*

Actually, I think I'm a bit flattered, if in an offhand sort of fashion.

But then again, maybe I'm a glutton for attention.

Amizadai - I remember someone telling me that when you get a kitten, you ought to get two -- not that much more work, and oh so much more fun. I think you were damned smart to get two rats and you are definitely reaping the benefits.

Oh, to have had lil' pets like those when I was dorming...fat effing chance. 14 times I moved..only one quarter did I get dorm space...and only one time did I have a place that took pets.

Who's up for Pocky on the grass after the video comp at Anime-Expo? There's going to be a sale at Marukai and it'll only be .79 a box.

It also appears that I will be reachable through Animeigo again --

And I'm going to Tennessee again this weekend. They expect rain. I expect to be very blue. *damn*
