Back from ACen
2002-04-25 12:10:24
Glad to see this site's finally back! I had a great time at ACen, but I spent soooooo much money <whimpers>. I bought 11 DVD's, plus some plushies (two cabbits and two totoros), two pencilboards, and several volumes of manga. Oh well. I'll just have to be good for a little while and not spend too much.
As it turned out, I did not enter my video in the contest. I kept having some stupid technical problem which I didn't get corrected in time. I'm kind of relieved, actually, since it let me just relax and take in the con. I didn't even get to see much of the contest since the room it was in always seemed to be packed.
I did get in some good viewing. I wandered into a showing of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and couldn't tear myself away. I knew it was going to be interesting after seeing Cyber Moon's "Moonlight Shadow" video, but now that I've seen the whole thing, all I can say is wow! For the first time ever, I feel like I finally "get" the whole vampire mystique. Fabulous visuals--I think some of those images haunted my dreams that night.
I also caught a bit of the new Kenshin Seisou-hen OAV. One of the dealers had it playing on a small monitor at his table. The bit I saw was some of the teeny bit of the Revenge Arc that actually got animated. Kaoru was acting very OOC--she voluntarily cooked something. The artwork looks fabulous, but it leaves me gnashing my teeth and wishing they had spent the whole time on that instead of the TV series summary. It still wouldn't have been enough, but it would have been better than rushing over it in less than half an hour. And what I'm hearing about the ending makes me very upset. Kenshin was such a feel-good series for me, and it had an important message about starting over and learning from your mistakes. Giving the story a dark ending negates the whole point. <sigh> Well, I figure that I don't have to accept the new ending, since it wasn't created by Watsuki.
Anyway, I'd say my first con was a great success overall and I'm looking forward to doing it again sometime. I used up a whole roll of film on cosplayers. Hope that turns out well.

I've Hit the Wall
2002-04-15 10:38:54
Arrrrrrrrgh! I'm so sick of looking at my stupid video. For every improvement I make, I seem to find 10 more problems. It's too slow, too simple, too plain, and although some planning did go into choosing the clips, I'm sure that will never come through. And I'm thinking of entering this in a contest?! Why should I subject myself to that?
All right <pant, pant>, I've got that out of my system now. I know that probably everybody hits this point, and it's necessary for improvement, but that doesn't make getting through it any easier! I even tried taking the weekend off but, it didn't help much. This week is going to be insane, too--I have to pitch for pledges at the radio station where I volunteer, write up extensive comments on a friend's play, finish reading as many MiSTings as possible so I can vote for their awards, and get a final draft of my video ready.
At least I have my taxes out of the way. I'm getting a nice refund this year and I'm already planning what anime to spend it on.
And next weekend ... ACEN, here I come! Yay!

Bah!

Spent all evening rendering the video last night, checked out the new version, and decided that one more thing needed fixing. Guess how I'm going to spend tomorrow evening....

FINALLY I seem to be making progress on draft 2 again. The decision to go ahead and submit the video for ACen seems to have helped. I've got a complete second draft which I'll probably let sit for a few days before making into a final version. I didn't make many big changes in the second draft, but I did a lot of tweaking to be sure things fit the music and rearranged a few of the clips.
It's a good thing I have this video to work on, because otherwise I'd be bored stiff. It sounds like my VCR may be terminal, which really sucks because I only bought it last July. That's what I get for buying a cheapie, I guess. At least I get to cat-sit again this weekend, which means I can have another mini-marathon. After watching Turboneko's "Crossed Swords" video, I got interested in Rose of Versailles, so I checked out the first volume from my club library. I'm looking forward to watching that.
And it's only 10 days to ACen!

I haven't written in a couple of weeks...

I haven't had anything worth reporting for a while. The second draft of my video is creeping forward by milliseconds. I know which areas need work, but I haven't worked out what to do with all of them. I'm tossing around several ideas for a second video, but none of them stands out enough from the others to make me latch onto it. Or actually, one of them does, but it's the one I can't get footage for. <sigh>
So I've been concentrating on writing some MiSTings, my other big hobby. I'm currently working on a MiSTing of a Lord of the Rings slash story!
