Shaun of the Dead is actually my favorite movie ever. And I don't think the creators really meant for it to be regarded solely as a spoof. I think it's just that naturally the realistic aspect would come off as amusing (the zombie shuffle and the absurdity of the slow movement), so they built on it.

Also, have you seen the remake of Night of the Living Dead? I thought that was actually pretty realistic. The new Land of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead (not Romero's original) were both decent too. I think Romero has a pretty good grip on the zombie "culture" even if there are some pretty sketchy parts in his movies. Of his, Day of the Dead was probably the least realistic, but it was at least entertaining. It's Russo's Living Dead movies that can get silly.

And then there's the not-really-zombies zombie movies: 28 Days Later and the Resident Evil movies. All of which I thought were great, even if the Resident Evil movies were clearly action-centric and the tense survival aspect was kinda thrown out the window because Mila Jovavich was invincible (at least in the 2nd one). But 28 Days Later was great, and the "zombies" had an excuse for being so fast because they weren't actually zombies but infected humans.

If there were no 'a' in bread, it'd be spelled the same as the past participle of the verb "breed." I don't think many people would mix up the two given proper context, but I'd rather have the silent 'a' than identical spellings for two completely different words. And that goes for many words that contain silent letters.
