JOURNAL: Mechaman (Scott Francis)

  • I'm Milk! He's Cheese! YOU'RE NEXT! 2003-01-01 17:51:39 I ended up going to a party thrown by my former employer(xyzandyou.org). Unfortunately, it was slow enough when I got there that I was pressed into service as the bartender. Which again wouldn't have been so bad, if I hadn't been stuck there for the rest of the fucking night, and forced to deal with the drunks trying to come back(it was a fairly large open area), stand around there and talk, mix their own drinks, and spilling shit everywhere. Even heightening it by having most of the guests being friends of the DJ, and not knowing jack about animation or anything else to talk about except "where's the booze". And the capping event was that, even though I got to dance for about 10-15 minutes, most guests had arrived in couples, and there were no single women(except for the bleached-blonde party whores) to dance with.
Not to mention that my hate-meter rises by drunks that I don't know trying to be clever. "Oh, hey, you're too uptight. *belch* Yuuoo need to like, unwind ,and stuff."

But then the host realized(at about 2am) the hell I'd been going through, and profusely apologized. So that made it somewhat better. It wasn't a horrible, life-changing experience mind you; it was just a pisser that had some entertaining moments(half-hearted female arm-wrestling! Dirty Harry quotes! Drunks trying to play Halo co-op!).

The consequence, though, is that I'm in the mood to rip things apart. For example, "6:40". Heh. I moved into Seattle just to leisurely wake up at 6am and have time for a good breakfast, as opposed to waking up at 5:30am and frantically driving to catch the bus to work at 6:30. SYMPATHY IS NOT GOTTEN FROM ME.

  • "Victory or defeat is all up to the runner." 2002-12-29 02:44:37 It's been awhile, hasn't it? Building a new machine, moving into a new apartment, waiting two weeks for DSL, having grandma break her ribs and get put in a nursing home(temporarily...?), and the holidays in the meantime will do that to you. At least I finally got to see Two Towers today; after two separate attempts to go see it. At this rate, I'll have to wait for the DVD to see Return of the King.

Benchmarking this machine's been hard, mostly because my game-related stuff doesn't do a whit to test SMP. Fortunately, I found the answer--XviD encoding a converted-from-WMV-raw E3 trailer for ZOE: 2nd Runner through VirtualDub. POING, those meters shoot to 100%. And it only takes 3 minutes for a 5-minute long clip. Aw, yeah. And being able to encode a directory of MP3s while playing UT2k3 at full speed. Aw, yeah^2.
I'm planning to switch to Vegas Video 3 as my new NLE(picking up MainVision if I need a compositor). Weird interface(although years of using Blender have taught me that interfaces should be hard to learn at first), but SMP-support, realtime previewing, excellent sound capabilities, and good DV support are the clincher. I've had a video idea ready for awhile, but have had no time to work on it. I may try to finish it for Sakura-Con, but with only a month or so until the deadline, it may not happen.
I'm more involved doing Unreal Tournament 2003 development work--I got WOTGreal working, and had a fun little weapon already built within a few hours last night. The Maya PLE they ship with it is still horribly watermarked though--somebody tell Alias|Wavefront to do the gmax thing with it. Fawk, like I'm really buying UT2k3 for a cheap copy of Maya. Even I have standards. We'll see if Blender's Python system is opened up to allow animation bone data to be exported, that fixes a few problems right there.
And it's still fun to hang around Seattle Gameworks waiting for Virtual-On competition, 5.2 timing issues, bad sticks and all. Come and challenge!

    ACTION! STEAK!

  • ITEM CRASH 2002-11-03 19:37:00 After joining the Hash ML, and discovering that A:M 10 probably won't ship until January(it just went into Beta the other day), decided to can the Sakura short, and just work on a video. Eases my workload, and gives me an excuse to hunt for From Hell, and the Boogiepop Phantom box set.

An apartment may have been found, depending on if my application-for-lease is accepted on Tuesday. Manager's nice, and the apartment's decent. A bit pricy($675/mo. for 540 ft^2), but it's in Seattle(First Hill), 15 minutes from my work, and has a nice kitchen.

The Dual-Athlon Workstation Of Justice has been planned out, now I just need to order. Unfortunately, my credit card only goes up to 1000, so I may need to use my debit card to order from newegg. Still, getting 90% of the parts from one place = the good.

And aspiring 3D video makers may want to check out briansum.com 's demo reel. Gorillaz in the house, yo.
  • Get the cool shoe-shine. 2002-10-27 01:19:43 Nothing as serious as the last post. Apartment hunting was particularly good today. Let's hear it for fall deals.

In other news; After experiencing a week of sleep-deprivation(through completely unrelated events) not felt since college, moving into the city to avoid waking up at 5:30am is a really really good idea. Unfortunately, in the time it's taken to learn that, I've had no energy to work on a short(not AMV) for the upcoming Sakura Con. I hope to rectify that in the next week, and pray that Hash's character tools are as streamlined as I've heard.

In other-other news; two web-advertised animation start-ups are back: Dustrunners(.com), and Deep Angel(.com).
What's interesting is that both of them disappeared for a few months(Dustrunners dropped off the face of the planet with nary a ripple), and then went massive changes(one would suspect someone with brains and a low fanboy quotient actually looked at them).
Deep Angel's who-needs-writers-when-we-can-crib-from-seaQuest plot and episode scripts were canned, in favor of a more Wing Commander approach. The game, not the movie. Hopefully. Please? Although I can't say I'm much in favor of the "hyperreal" look ever since FF: TSW.

Dustrunners still has the same approach(and their forums, which I suspect are reaching gamefaqs IQ, or else approaching a level of clique that could move planets), but they managed to "lose" the Ralph Bakshi-channeling-Don Bluth character designs. Hopefully "...for good". Even more hopefully, "...with Sterno". And best hope, "..along with the artist"

    Thank you, goodnight.
