  • Manson's Keynote Speech 2002-11-30 12:32:11 Thank you.

I think I picked an easy topic to talk about today. It's one I know very well, and it's about censorship and content and responsibility.

I wanted to look at things in a different way. I think it's easy right now to complain about the current state of music. I think we can all agree we don't need another N/SYNC. And that's an easy band to take a pot shot at. But in general what they represent… the idea of just another endorsement for Pepsi. Music at this point runs the risk of just becoming a commercial itself, and an advertisement for a bigger company like Seagram's or whoever owns the label I'm on, and things like that.

So I think it's our job to, you know, rather than the censorship that people like Joseph Liebermann are trying to employ, I think it's our job to speak what's on our mind. And stop making everything so "G" Rated. Stop using saccharine instead of sugar, taking the nicotine out of cigarettes, taking the penetration out of pornography, and things like that.

A funny example - I'm just about to release a new single called "The Nobodies" and I was asked to take the word "dead" out of the song, because it was considered offensive.

So… I want to talk about the responsibility of art and its effect on small children and small animals, blah, blah, blah and the rest.

I want to talk about artist's responsibility. We don't create the words or sentiments. If you arrange letters in any order you can make words. A lot of these words are offensive to some people. You can say faggot, red neck, Republican, whore, nazi, bitch, honkey, or obviously the most offensive of all is nigger. Or the ones that I prefer being throbbing uncircumcised member. That's just my artistic choice.

But my point is that these words and feelings existed before any of us were born, and as artists it's our job to pull them from the sky or wherever they exist, and use them in new and interesting ways that affect people in new and interesting ways.

An interesting example that I heard yesterday, kind of off the subject, but it brought up the subject of "Did the person who invented the video camera also invent pornography?" And that's the way you have to look at things. Someone who writes a song doesn't invent love or hate or anger.

I heard a funny thing on censorship. They are going to now pass a law that you can't have a teddy bear in a pornographic film, or a lollypop. Because apparently that makes it more offensive than some girl just being savagely sodomized by some hairy man. If there's a teddy bear in the picture, then it's all of a sudden no good. And that, excuse the term "fisting", is now no longer allowed past the thumb. Before, I think it was up to the shoulder.

So censorship just doesn't harm me, it also harms Ron Jeremy.

I've just always found it to be my job to take negative things and make them positive. And I think of an artist as a person who chooses to express themselves with their imaginations rather than acting out their feelings in ways that we all find unacceptable. I think everybody has a basic morality - not wanting to harm other people. And when you have a feeling of anger, you have a felling of lust, the feelings that you're born with, feelings that you can't control, that's really what separates us as artists - that we choose to put those things in our songs, books and movies. And when a fan hears or sees these things and can relate to them, it's the greatest compliment because then we exist on the same wavelength. And that's what makes me mad every time art is blamed. I think its giving entertainment too much credit to blame us for the problems of the world, but the problems existed before entertainment, before television.

I think also for everything that an artist is blamed for; he can turn around and blame the things that influenced his creation. For everybody that blames me for what I do, I can turn around and say it's the exact world that's attacking me that influenced me to do what I do. And that's my best way of explaining what I do.

    Thank you.

  • I HATE MY FYP!! 2002-11-29 10:23:06 arghhh..this is definitely the worst possible way i can sepnd my holidays/....writing this wretched report and preparing for the wrteched presentation.

Nothing happening lately as i spend the last few days at home doing all this crap

Celebrated KB's bday with a simple dinner and watched 3 movies though.

HARRY POTTER: not much to say...but is one of those movies that'd be perfect if it had actually been shorter

8 MILE (downloaded) : GREAT stuff..i've never been a fan of Eminen but i lov the way he raps off.... i've not counted the # of profanities in the movie but i tot it must have broken the world record

THEY (downloaded and i'm glad i did): save for a decent ending...the whole movie was cliche after cliche...it wasn't even bad..it was worse, boring and forgettable. I got the idea the movie was made so the main chracters can go "THEY ARE COMING FOR US..." somehow we are supposed to be scared when they say things like that.
The movie was recorded off camcorder and the background noise was so full of laughters at every silly move the female lead made and the dumb things that happen u'd think it was a comedy

Lastly, Ghost in the Shell standalone complex is great ....check it out. Its a very adult anime...when i say that i mean its often meant to be a thriller (like a detective movie) rather than an all action, violent, full-of-nudity movie that was its predecessor. In fact there was hardly any action....fans of DBZ beware :) I'd say its very plot driven....the kind of stuff i go for these days. Still rmred the time i watcched STAR OCEAN EX..the queasy kawaiiness of each and every character was simply overkill..

  • The Returner part deux 2002-11-25 07:00:19 What a tiring day... haven't been so since i spend 36 hrs awake preparing for my exams

I was expecting the routine sunday soccer session when i reached the usual place but what i wasn't prepared for was a full-blooodied 11 aside match and guess what i was asked to play central midfield this time.
It was the same team we narrowly beat last time but well..lets just say things were a little different this time...some of our strongest players weren't here and some of theirs were this time. Most of us just came back after from exams and were not really match fit,

Eddie tried to spur me up by commending me for my first half performance in which i clearly remembered making 1 single successful tackle and 2 completed passes (not exactly the kind of thing i'll say to my grandchildren in future) Well, maybe he was referring to my performance with respect to the other players coz in all brutal honesty....we were bad...reall bad..we were overran and our defence was non-exisitent so much so that i had to switch to righ wing and later right back to combat their awesome duo who were terrorising us non-stop

We lost 4-0 in the end....with abt 3 of their goals disallowed for offisde
I could help but think that i could stop a couple of them..i was the last 1 or 2 defenders back when all the goals were conceded. There were a couple when i could have really done stg ...but then again at least i was there...doing a center back's job (where was the defence ???)

It was absolutley shattering...so much so we decided to play the usual 6 aside among ourselves later on in which i did score my customary goal
(i seem to perform so much better 6 or 7 aside....alas)

The running joke was abt how HJ boasted abt his hattrick last week which i wasn't here to see. it was really funny how he managed to exggerate it..haha The rest weren't so eager to talk abt him being the 'hattrick hero' (which incidently got him the striker's position for this match) though which might say a little abt the goals he scored. In all due respect...i found it hard to imagine him scoring a hattrick...LOL

Later we went for the most expensive meal of chickenrice i've ever had. $7 !!!! arghhh !!!
A plate of chickenrice costs only 90 cents here in my place
Shopping in Parkway was well..fun. Parkway has really undergone some drastic changes...the bulding has a much brighter feel abt it ..the arcade looks better and the GIANT MART looks much like a KMART clone.
The shops here now sell more than just clothes and the escalators....wow.....its hard to describe..lets just say its a great concept! Edddie said some of the haridressers here provide hrmm.. "special service" Might want to check that out soem day... surely "special service "means talking abt politics over a cup of tea, i reckon? :P

Went to ZW's home after that for a game of winning eleven which he trashed me as usual. Had the chance to test out his Pentuim 3 with a new $400 graphics accelerator and 256 mb ram with the neat game "NO one lives forever 2" Borrowed some games as well ( Alien vs predator 2, MAX PAYNE and RTCW) which i found to my dismay were playing with a frame speed of 1 fps on my "powerful" celeron 333mhz with 16mb 1998 ATI rage 3d card. I think i better stick to my trusty PSX1.

Reached home with a sense of dread of things ahead. MY FYP presentation deadline is drawing near and i've done abso nutting so far
  • ZW: yes laugh all u want 2002-11-23 11:47:19 To think i was making jokes abt Newcastles' defense against Manure earlier in the day to ZW when we were watching the match. How ironic that all these adjectives can now be used on pool.

By the way 5-3!!! That was a cracking match!!!!
    Let me see

    Van Nisterooy: 4 goals
    Geremi: i goal 1 assit
    Anelka: 1 goal
    Silvestre: 1 assist

This is a good week in yahoo fanatsy league for me at least>
But damn.......Bellamy had to play AND SCORE everytime i sell him
  • MAN IN THE IRON MASK? THE WAY WE ARE PLAYING ...WE'll HAVE TROUBLE WINNING AGAINST BLINDFOLDED KIDS 2002-11-23 11:43:25 This is bad. This is very bad. 2 losses on the trort away from home. A performance thats so consistently bad recently....u can smell the stench a mile away.

What the heck was Dudek doing ?? Mishandling..misjudging....miscontrolling...he had a stinker of a game...
However this results proved one thing...we have been relying on our defence for way too long. A single freak goal had gotten us wins against Leeds and Chelsea but this result proved that we need to start scoring goals and stop playing like whores: opening up way too often and leaving little to the imagination.

Heskey? Need i say more...hands up to those pool fans who think heskey shld be at the club let alone starting the match?
Err..Fergie...u can put ur hands down now

Dam..its obvious that Baros is making an impact everytime he comes on ..creating chances for others and himself. Heskey with all due respects is nothing but a brute... if we are 1-0 up with 15 mins to go..by all means bring him in and create some nuisance and do some tackling but when we are 2-0 down and need goals (can u even spell it, Emile?), for goodness sake..GET RID OF HIM!! Determination alone dun get u anywhere..if so..i shld be on the bench at least.. gimme a tenth of heskey's salary and i'll be out there bursting my lungs and tearing my limbs.

I'm not even so upset abt the result which says a lot abt our perfomances recently... To think we need a Hamman blockbuster (which is the onli thing rarer than a Heskey goal) to life out spirits in the mother of all insults.
To think that a england under-21 Sean Davis tore our defences like a knive thru shitcake...Houllier must be relieved that we are not facing Real Madrid later this week.

An posesses Everton team..followed by manure and arse ...we better start praying ..and real soon. Without a midfield genius of ol Gary macca and Litmanen ...we'll need every ounce of luck we can get
