Leo Nithnellem sat down on the floor of his room surrounded by articles of what looked like dirty clothing, and scattered empty bottles of various drinks. They included beer, soda and an occasional water lying about in his messy labyrinth of a room. He was obviously broken.
The gel in his hair from a previous performance was flaking, the caked-on eye makeup was smudged and saturated around his eyes. He looked like a drunken racoon.
He lied in his own heap of angst and sorrow as he remained motionless and occasionally threw in an uncontrollable sob, and seeped an involuntary tear.
The blonde singer had finished a wild night of performing and partying, and hadn’t come home until early morning. He had been lying there for an entire day. Life meant nothing to him any longer. He was an empty shell among a sea of clams. He only performed because his grandmother had loved to hear him sing. Not even God himself was able to pull Leonardo from his mope.
His grandmother had finally arrived back from shopping, like always she knocked on his door. He would not reply only to find the door was locked. Sometimes he replied, only a sad ‘leave me...’ most of the time. This time was urgent.
“Leo, honey, I think you should get up and have some nice beef vegetable soup. Oh, you’ll never believe what happened! Isis was hospitalized last night. She’s in a semi-coma. I think you should go down there and see her.” The grandmother stated.
It manage to rouse him. “Isis...” He moaned. He managed to get up and unlock his door. He stumbled to the kitchen and leaned over a chair. “I love her... she’s the only reason I continue to live... I have to go see her...” mumbling almost incoherently, he fell over himself and hit the floor. He winced, and managed to push himself up, shakily on his hands. But the weight was too much for him, and his arms gave out.
Pressing his hand onto the floor he managed to pull himself like an inchworm. His grandmother, startled, dragged his body and placed him on the couch. “Leonardo Nithnellem! What has happened to you? What has become of you? You were once a great king! Have you been reduced to a moping pile of tears and problems? I think not. I’ll get you something to eat, if I have to feed it to you!” She stormed back into the kitchen.
“Rei...” He whispered to himself, attempting to get off the couch. He was too weak, so he fell onto the floor. He attempted, feebly to get up again, only to see a blurred image of his hand as a tear dripped onto it. It tore him apart to realize that the love of his eternity, the center of his universe might perish in the infirmary, and he wasn’t even strong enough to get up and say goodbye to her. It made himself sick inside.
Without warning or hesitation, the front door flew open to reveal Dave. “Leo, c’mon you gotta goto the hospital, Rei might die!” He shouted, looking about, to see what was left of Leo lying on the floor. He ran over to him, and lifted him up. His eyes were watering, and fading from life and unconsciousness. Dave stopped to think. “What’s the matter with you, you goddamn, crying pussy! Get the hell up and go to the hospital. No. Stay here. She’s probably in her bed with Seth on top of her fucking the shit out of her. That whore. She probably begged him. She’s really enjoying it I bet. And that bastard Seth is probably loving it. Just forget about her, she’s not worth worrying about.” Dave smirked still holding Leo. A sudden spark returned in him, as he whipped his fist around to punch Dave in the face. He did so and Dave dropped him. There was a certain fire in his chocolate eyes gaze he got up and bolted out his door without a sign of impotence, or an uttered word of leaving.
Dave sat up and smiled. He got to his feet and followed suit. It was a race against time. A race to say goodbye to the girl whom shunned and betrayed them so.
The determined light-haired boy jumped into Dave’s Mercedes-Benz and searched for the key. Dave came out and jumped in with his friend and threw the keys into the ignition. Leo hit the gas as hard as he could and the automobile blazed off into the street.
Dave’s hand clutched the armrest. He shouted commands at Leo to slow down and not wreck his car as his horrified stare was fixated on the inclining speedometer needle. Strangely there wasn’t a cop in site.
The colors gyrated around the two boys in the accelerating Mercedes. The air lashed around them like grazing swords, but Leo didn’t mind. His fragile heart raced wildly, as if it were to explode from his chest cavity. Dave managed to release a small amount of fear, and in doing so a corner of his mouth slightly lifted.
“Hey, blondie, if we die, we’re out a drummer and a singer! So much for making a record and going platinum!” Dave joked to the best of his affrighted ability. Leo seemed uncharacteristically mortally solemn.
“I don’t care about that. Rei’s life is worth an infinite number of platinum records. You can’t put a price on her. That bastard, Seth seems to think so. I would gladly stand at the gates of hell and sing for an eternity if it meant I could be with her. We’ll meet in another life, but time is running out. Soon, if we don’t settle this, our sand will run out and our souls will be wiped from existence. As if we never existed at all. We are using too much of God’s energy. There is a deadline for this you know. I’m afraid that we only have a few more years or so until the sun aligns itself again. And in the Holy Assembly, we will have no record, no place, no admittance... This means more than love, David. This is whether or not I can get both of us to ascend properly. I wander with her trying to get her to finish our ceremony. I gave up my place to become a wandering soul, when I should have had eternal life. Rei deserved this life as well, but she was not granted it because of me. So the only way I see to repay her is to finish what we started 3,000 years ago. Then we can finally rest in the fields of hetep eternally. Forever... together in a golden field of barley, surrounded with children and angels...” He explained.
Dave was at a loss for words. He thought either Leo had lost every ounce of sanity in him, or he was speaking the truth. Still, he was dumbfounded. He looked at Leonardo and nodded. “Let’s go then. They’re not married yet.” He smiled. Dave loved Rei, but at that moment he realized that no one could love anyone as much as Leo loved her. So he decided to accept that. And as a friend, he would support Leo and try to get Rei out of the rut he saw she was in.
The once mighty pharaoh, slowed the car down in front of the hospital driveway to pull in and park. He did so, only to find a large amount of barricades, police and their cars, and maybe a thousand shouting fans.
Leo jumped from the car and pushed through the masses. Dave came after him. Police were trying to calm the fans down, with megaphones and Leo came up to the barricades that blocked off the doors, and kept the people back. There were news crews everywhere talking to people, and etc. Some really eccentric people tired to jump the barricade, only to get ushered away. So no one did, but determined old Leo jumped the barricade and as soon as he did it there were cameras and guards all over him. Leo shouted who he was, and that did not faze the guards at all. As soon as they grabbed him to usher him away, Dave came up behind him. Luckily Ceres and Vincent ran outside, and Ceres threw her arms around Leo’s neck. “Oh, dear, you look horrid! I think she’ll be okay. Let’s go.” Leo nodded, hugging her back. Dave shook Vincent’s hand, and they slapped each other on the back. The group jogged to the entrance as Ceres led the way, dragging Leo by the arm. All the televisions were turned on to the news where the commotion outside seemed to get under a little bit of control.
“Where’s Princess Dick?” Dave asked Vincent.
“He won’t leave Rei. He’s afraid she’s gonna die if he leaves.” Vincent shrugged, wishing to smoke a cigarette.
“Where’s Jessica?”
“Same.”
“Ok, how about Skid?”
“He’s there, too.” Vincent explained. Ceres finally found the elevator, and they sat waiting to be on the floor where Rei lied. As soon as the elevator dinged, Ceres jogged, Leo at her heel, into the deathly-silent room Rei lied in. Leo Ran to her, but saw Seth sitting beside her, holding her hand and it jolted Leo with a raw feeling of envy, hatred, and anger. Dave scowled in his throat.
Jessica sat at the end of the bed, crying, and Rick was at the open window, surveying the scene below us. Vincent resumed his place in the dark corner, the very sight of Seth sickened him.
Skid Slavaggio sat driving his Ferrari, anxiously, as sweat dripped from his head and hit the steering wheel his hands were clenched around as he waited in traffic. Finally after a little while, he drove up on the grass in the front of the infirmary, right behind the crowd of fans. He stumbled over his own legs scurrying to get himself out. He literally pushed people down to get to the front of the mass. After getting to the middle people were hitting him, back and crowding in. He took his keys and threw them in the air and he shouted, “FREE FERRARI!” No one believed him, but someone grabbed the keys, and sat in his car and started it up. Everyone suddenly attacked the car. Leaving the desperate Italian alone, he sprinted up to the barricade and having no coordination, he tripped jumping over the barrier, and went down with it. The guards were angered, and picked him up and were about to arrest him, or something, but Dave whistled from the window and the guards looked up. Dave signaled for the guards to let him come. Someone even escorted him once he got inside.
The raven-haired boy was shaken deeply. He jerkily walked to the bed, to see the once-lively angelic woman with no life in her face. He bit his lip and took his coat and scarf off. He was wearing a suit. He knelt by Seth, next to Rei. Seth’s eyes were fixed on the television.
“I love that tie, Ran. It’s very nice. Hey, that’s a very nice thing you did for us. I assume the car was paid in full, correct?” Seth asked. Skid nodded. “Allow me to buy you a new car. Anything you want, the new Lamborghini would look nice in your driveway.” He winked. All Skid could do was shake and nod. He placed a nervous hand on Rei’s leg.
“You’re shaking pretty hard. Don’t worry, she’ll be fine...” Seth smiled. Suddenly his smile faded as he turned his head. “I hope...”
Skid’s eyes widened, as he stared at Rei’s body. His thoughts raced, jumbled and escaped him. He was pouring sweat as his complexion turned pale, and his hand shook more. He was about to weep, out of sheer terror. His vision escaped him and the only thing he could see was Rei’s face.
He was jolted back to reality when Seth placed a hand on his back, and handed Skid a handkerchief. “Thank... you....” Skid replied wiping off his face. He looked at Jessica and noticed that she was sleeping! Leo spat. Seth was an evil bastard.
“What happened to you?” Skid inquired towards Leo. Leo simply walked into the bathroom and washed his face off, so he wouldn’t look like a racoon. He got a comb from his pocket and combed his hair quickly.
Ceres sat on the windowsill. “Rei... you can’t die today... I know she won’t die! She won’t die will she Vin?” Ceres sobbed. He did not reply.
“She won’t.” Seth said. Ceres looked at him.
“I wasn’t asking you! You’re probably the one who made her si-,” Ceres started, but Dave put a hand over her mouth.
“Chill out ! You’re hysterical!” Dave exclaimed. A voice came from the dark corner.
“And you are the biggest hypocrite in this entire godforsaken non-smoking facility. Anyone here who says they believe that he didn’t put her in a coma, is a liar.” Cere’s lover barked.
“You can say that again.” Leo said coming out.
“How dare you accuse me of doing such a thing! We were going to plan our wedding today. I love her.” Seth stated, putting Rei’s hand to his face.
“You love money! Maybe you don’t want to marry her! It’s a little coincidental that this all happened on your ‘wedding planning day’. Just shut up and sit there. No one here wants to hear anymore of your lies.” Rick folded his arms. Seth was about to get up.
“Shut up, all of you. Who cares if he did? All that matters is that we are here for her. Don’t fight over something stupid, when she might die... Just all of you shut up...” Skid said quietly.
Someone knocked on the door. Everyone had hoped that it was the doctor with a diagnosis, but they don’t knock.... Leo answered it. There was a woman, with a girl hanging shyly on her leg. Leo looked at Seth and let the two strangers in. Leo ushered them to Rei’s bedside.
“Oh, my, a real celebrity! It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. Rikks!” The woman shouted, shaking his hand. He smiled warmly, at her and asked her how she got in. “Oh, my daughter was in the hospital for her treatment. And then we heard what happened to Mrs. Rikks and we decided to come here, I hope its okay, Isabella wanted to meet you, and Mrs. Rikks.” The woman explained.
“Oh, no problem at all.” He put a hand on the little girls head and smiled at her. She giggled and pointed to Rei.
“I hope I can be as pretty as her someday!” She grinned.
“Oh you will, I’m sure!” Seth grinned.
“If its not too much trouble, my husband I really admire you, could you autograph this?” She asked, taking a picture out of her wallet with Seth in it. Seth went inside his coat and took out a beautiful gold pen. He carefully removed the glass and signed his name on his own picture.
“You must be a big fan. Have you ever been to one of my hotels?” He asked. She shook her head.
“I could never afford it.” He took out a piece of stationary that was folded into quarters and scribbled a note. The charming man handed it to the woman, with the gold pen.
“Now you can go whenever you want. Just don’t live there.” He smiled. The woman looked shocked and shook his hand and thanked him many times.
“C’mon Isabella, let’s go show daddy at home!” the mother said, walking out with her child. Seth placed his head on her shoulder and rubbed her hand with his.
“Someday, we can have children, my love.” he whispered. Ceres looked away, biting her tongue. It was silent for a moment, when suddenly a phone started ringing. Everyone looked around and claimed theirs was off. Seth leaned back and answered it.
“What do you want? That’s the third time you’ve called in an hour.” Seth snapped. The man on the other end was screaming so loud, everyone could hear.
“Is she okay?!” He screamed.
“Fine, just fine. Quit shouting.” Seth commanded.
“Did she wake up, can I talk to her?”
“She’s not awake.”
“What’s wrong? Seth if I find out you did anything to her I am going to kick your ass so hard...”
“Not if I kick yours first. I wasn’t with her last night, was I? I only saw her for a little bit this morning. The only one who could have done something to her was, you.” Seth accused.
“You know I wouldn’t do that, you little fuck! Lets trade! This is driving me insane, I am coming down there!”
“And get arrested? You want to give Rei a heart-attack when she awakens?”
“Lets trade!”
“No. I’m not going to get up and leave the building and then “come back” later. I am not leaving. You stay at home like a good dog. She’ll feed you when she gets home.” Seth hung up.
Everyone in the room stared at Seth. “A friend of ours.” He shrugged. Their eyes still surveyed him, having no clue what was going on.
A doctor walked in with a clipboard and pulled up a chair. “All right. She’ll be all right, but she is suffering from acute arsenic poisoning.” The doctor paused and noted everyone’s reaction. Everyone’s jaw had fallen. “Don’t worry! Its not as bad as it seems! Its treatable! We pumped her stomach earlier and sh had a small amount of alcohol also in her blood. Do you have any idea what happened Mr. Rikks?” The doctor questioned.
“I wasn’t home last night, no I don’t.” Seth shook his head.
“Okay, well that’s how she was poisoned, Mr .Rikks, The arsenic was in her drink. I’ll be in and out every so often to check on her, okay?” The doctor said, shaking Seth’s hand and getting up. Seth got up also, and thanked the doctor and walked him out.
Jessica finally stirred, alarmed. She looked terrible, as if she hadn’t slept for weeks. She screamed and started asking if it was too late and she started weeping out of sorrow, and she apologized deeply for passing out.
“No, hey its alright, you haven’t slept right for days, its okay...” Ceres comforted.
“Where are your parents, Ran?” Seth asked.
“Out... of town...” Skid replied.
Hours passed and Seth bought everyone lunch on their request. Leo avoided Jessica’s stares, and apologetic words. They were both equally crushed. Finally at nightfall they had made a truce, and everyone eventually fell asleep wherever. Ceres was sprawled on the floor, Leo sitting in a chair, Dave with his head against the wall, Rick lying on Ceres, Jessica slept with her head on Rick’s knee. However, there were two men in the room who weren’t sleeping.
Finally Vincent appeared from his corner and sighed, smoking a cigarette out the window. The moonlight reflected off his eyes as his gazed into the city. Someone stirred behind him. He snapped around, hoping it wasn’t a staff member. Seth peeked open an eye.
“Do you have one of those for me?” Seth asked.
“No. You’re rich, go buy yourself some.” Vincent snapped, trying to ignore Seth.
“Hey, all I did was ask.” Seth shrugged, examining Rei’s ring.
“Who was on the phone?” The scarred man asked, still gazing into the city lights like fireflies in a field.
“No one you have to be concerned about. It doesn’t matter anyway.” Seth leaned back in his chair.
“You put the poison in her drink.”
“I did not. I wasn’t home. The only one who was, was the man I was talking to on the phone, no lie. And even if he poisoned her, she’d still insist he live in our home, am I wrong Rei?” Seth looked at her expressionless face, maliciously. Vincent made a ‘hmpf’ noise and flicked his cigarette away, into the sky. He once again receded into the corner.
Seth laughed and stared at the sleeping beauty before him. He whispered into her ear, “That wine cooler wasn’t for you, my darling. Next time I promise I will label my poisons.”
