Alright, looks like I'll have to re-install that that demo of Soundforge I got. Premiere's limited audio editing isn't accurate enough for me to trim the music smoothly enough. I mean, it's not something all that obvious, but I can hear it, and probably some who track the original down will be able to as well. Well, I've got plenty of time to fix it as it's pretty far into the video and I'm going to be editing this thing sequentially.
I'm also in the middle of creating a copy of the normal full-screen image of the maiden circuit at 16X resolution. If I only needed to blow it up, say, 25% I wouldn't have a problem, but I need some pretty small elements taking up the entire screen at times. So, it'll be interesting how that turns out. Tracing it isn't really an issue, that's only time consuming. Coloring and texturing will be the hard part.
Anyway, this video is going to be dramatic but have elements that will push this to the edge of both the action and dance categories, but not quite enough for it to be classified as either. It should be pretty cool when it's finished.

Alright then...

Got a response from the guy and he's cool with it, so I will be making another SMJ video. Now the only thing standing in my way is learning After Effects.

Hiatus over... sorta...

Well, it looks as though I'll be breaking my promise and doing a second SMJ video. I want to make another AMV and it's simply cheaper than running out and buying an entire series. So get ready to dock those creativity points! The good news is this one will most likely be based on the actual template I'll use for my future work, unlike my first three, which are me just learning the ropes really. However, before I begin I'm actually going to try to get permission to use the music. It's not really a long shot as there aren't any record companies to deal with. But I am coming out of the blue with the request to this guy... well, you never know. Plus, I haven't seen much of this kind of music here, so it will be a unique vid in a way.
The working title is "Maiden Circuitry"... if I get permission, of course :)

Finally, almost a month after ACen, I have come up with the courage to delete the entire Light of Day project and source files from my HD, freeing up a HUGE chunk of space on my tiny 20gig. I really hate doing that, but my computer is thanking me.
Must... write... review... for... xenodrake... Where are my TA CDs? Maybe I should actually look for them? I just haven't been in the mood really, I mean, Princess Mononoke doesn't move me to action, and I'm a damn good procrastinator. Sorry xeno!
In other news I have two more vid ideas... let's see, that makes four definates and three maybes now. So I just need to get the footage and get started. Well, the good news is these two vids are going to be using anime that has hardly been done to death, one I'd say has been underused, actually. Plus, the music choice will be different and they'll be in the "action" category, which will be a new thing for me.
Let's see, what else... ah! I thought up a new mecha-suit design today! Of course, I haven't been talking about this in my journal, so everyone is totally lost right now. Let's just say I've been copying different series and crossing them with other series for an idea I have, and today I hit upon a uniform idea that isn't a copy of any of 'em and should be faster to draw! So I'm happy. Now I just have to draw it...

Belated ACen entry
2002-05-01 03:09:57
Gee, ACen was over a week ago, you'd think I could have taken time out of my life to sit down and write something about it in a timely manner, but alas, I didn't, so bear with me. The events were great, great guest, better than last year. Of course, it could just be the fact that I actually went with some friends that's giving me that opinion, but anyway. The schedualing was pretty bad. I mean, why would they split up the time table on two different pages? Who the hell thought it was a good idea to list the Main Events on a different page than everything else? BAKA! And then there were some omisions too... but, on to the part you'll be most interested in, the AMV contest!
Yes, count me as one of the whiners. I'm sorry, but five years is ample time to get with the program. The first problem was making the deadline the day before the contest. Granted, this allowed me to get my video in, but it does not make for a good finished product. The first AMV showing was horrible, and strangely, what few vids were shown there won all the awards. I don't know if there's a connection but it's entirely possible. About an hour and a half was simple padding of random vids that DID NOT make the cut, if that makes any sense. Then there was the second showing. Bad projector... bad! Brights were too bright and darks were almost too dark. How did that get pulled off? Bad computer... bad! Most of the videos had lots of jerkiness into them that I thought was due to bad source material... until it got to my video. Ugh... Anyway, I tested my file on a hastily setup projector afterwards and got a remarkibly clear and defined picture, with no jerkiness. Hell, there wasn't even a significant amount of color bleeding (as there was at the con... oh God was there color bleeding at the con). So the bad playback was not due to problems on my end. Bad speakers! Bad! Tiny, tinny little things that were on the verge of exploding, spitting out almost as much static as music. The leason for next year, BYOS. I'll have my harman/kardons sitting in the car. They may not be big, but they'll easily put out enough quality sound to fill that room. And I really want to know just what do they mean by "Technical Achievement"? Every time they've given out the award the choice has really baffled me.
Anyway, my suggestions for ACen 2003 (or any con for that matter)
1) Deadline at least two weeks (preferably a month) ahead of schedual.
2) Prejudging done by the judges ahead of schedual. If you want viewers to judge make them the second to last step of voting only on the qualifiers, otherwise there won't be time. Judges will also break ties.
3) Get a decent setup, preferably something that wasn't found in a dumpster. A reliable projector can be found on E-bay for $300. At least make sure you have the color balance in the ballpark. As a general rule you want a dark room with the brightness LOW.
4) Limit the number of pure AMVs. One or two pure Evangelion or Trigun videos is fine, but we do not need to see seven videos using the same footage over and over. This will keep the audience from falling asleep as well, and will hopefully motivate people to try something new for a change. And really, when you think about it, 95% of Evangelion videos are all the same. And people complain about DBZ...
