Effect Frenzy
2003-08-17 15:49:04
I wouldn't say I hate effects, but I haven't seen many major effects videos that left me drooling (the only ones I can name off the top of my head are Odorikuruu, Euphoria, Behind the Pirate (effects are at the beginning), Senshi on Springer, Right Now Someone is Reading This Title, and Tainted Donuts, compared to the countless awesome videos I've seen that had very little to no FX.
I'll take great editing over flashy FX ANY day. For me, FX are like make-up: if you use them well, nobody should notice them. They should enhance the footage instead of drowning it out, like make-up should enhance a woman's features, not cover them up. Then again, I wear make-up about as often as I use FX.
I happened to get Premiere discounted (gotta love being a college student sometimes), but I certainly don't see it as a waste if I don't take advantage of its flashy effect capability...yet. The main advantage with Premiere as opposed to other cheap programs is that it offers the room to grow. I simply haven't been confident enough to employ major video effects just yet.
But that should change fairly soon.
After acquiring the first 45 episodes or so of One Piece from a friend of mine, I'm planning a video that, when finished, will resemble something of a Broadway-on-film. THAT will require heavy use of effects. However, I'm not intending said effects to be flashy-looking. No lens flares or strobing. I personally find those distracting as all hell, along with the dreaded "piano bar" effect =P
I guess the bottom line is that for me effects are in the same category as lipsynch: if you don't know what you're doing, don't bother. Nothing ruins an otherwise great video for me like a cheap, distracting effect.

*waves to Showstoppa*
'Bout freakin' TIME you joined up! You already know my Ron Rant of DOOM. If anyone in the HP series deserves the axe (besides the obvious Voldemort, Bellatrix Lestrange, and Lucius Malfoy), it's Ron. He's an ungrateful little snot who needs the daylights beaten out of him and some sense beaten in. And as of OotP, I'll have to add Cho to the list. If only for the fact that she cries over Cedric one minute and throws herself at Harry like he never existed the next. Rebound shit is annoying as hell. She's shallow little thing, and Harry can definitely do better.
On a lighter note, I'm looking extremely forward to coming back up to college next week. Ordinarily I wouldn't say that, but if you lived with my family, Siberia would be a welcome respite. I swear sometimes if it wasn't for the pets and the only computer in the house capable of editing AMVs, I'd stay in Orlando. Between the country music, the constant pestering about my anime addiction, my sister's pointless fanfic rambling about how I "don't have a pulse" because I'm not a hopeless romantic (not to mention her alleged Harry Potter addiction when she's never picked up the fucking books!), and the fact that every time I get on the computer I'm suddenly the family gopher, I'm about ready to stick a fork in myself.
But I digress. I meant that as a lighter note. Shit....
Ok, on a REAL lighter note, I went shopping for back-to-college stuff. Votive candles, an incense burner and 40 sticks so my room will smell all nice and stuff, and I'm saving up for the Sinbad and Pirates of the Carribbean soundtracks. Great movies, kickass music. Life is good. Life is good indeed.
Guess I'm outta here for now....

Omni, I feel your pain

I applied for that very same op exchange, and Creator-Who-Shall-Remain-Nameless doesn't acknowledge it. I have yet to receive an op, I actually bothered to download theirs, but I don't know if I have the energy to write an in-depth analysis of why I don't like their video (besides the obvious). And I wouldn't put it past them to give my vid all 1s in retaliation.
I agree that people need to grow some thickened skin around here. I've received negative reviews that I've disagreed with, and I politely responded to said review with my defense for it. The parts I agreed with, I put under my belt for next time. It's called being an artist.
Just as a side note, I would love to see how te n00b in question would've survived my Drawing II class a few semesters ago. I had a professor who literally tore your work in half in front of everybody if he didn't like it. My guess is, this person would've run crying to the Registrar's office to have the class dropped immediately. Unfortunately, they don't have such an option here.
