I had a good morning on Saturday and got through a pretty substantial chunk, but then a better afternoon along an entirely different axis, a rough night, and Sunday pretty much had to be written off completely. The prospects are better for this week, even if I've got some stuff in the last dailies that needs smoothed out tonight and pre-existing death metal commitments Thursday. If this video isn't out by this time next week, I'll be quite surprised.

This marks a real turnaround from expectations; this video's getting delayed principally because I'm not working on it, not because editing it's proving to be especially hard. It's not much tougher, surprisingly, than a normal video, and in some ways this is because of rather than in spite of the constraints on how I have to assemble it. There's a bit of a twist to it, so I can't really discuss that directly, but compared to the crushing deathmarch that I had to do for SH115, this is definitely a much simpler and more editor-friendly way to upset paradigms.

It's working. Granted, it's only 16 seconds done so far, but it's coming together both faster and better than I anticipated in the planning process, and I've got such a huge source volume kicking around that it shouldn't be a problem to keep on this pace. I'm out thrashing tonight, but should have enough availability over the rest of the weekend to get at least to the 3-minute mark by the end of Sunday.

The only problem is that I have to build dailies of this, wall or no wall, to check on how the video is going. This video is entirely dependent on multiple levels of synch and is built out of HD source, and the editing station I'm on really can't handle that in editor playback. Obviously, I need to get that fixed -- it's going on 7 years since I built that computer -- but for the moment, I have no time and a video to complete, so, export, mixdown, rinse, repeat. At least it's working, and at least it makes certain I can keep ahead of the wall hits.

Aided by a lot of content I didn't need, I cut through the rest of the source last night, loaded it into the editor, and got the music onto the timeline. There's more stuff that I need to do before I can actually start editing, but it's possible that I'll be able to handle that tonight and start actually getting video on the timeline at least by Sunday morning. Show commitments and other stuff are bodging up the schedule, but this one is going to get done before the festival break, and it's not impossible that another video might wrap before then as well.

There may be an omake video for this one if the current idea for 119 works out as intended; there are some class shots that need working out to certain music, but I'm not going to take time or editor stability away from the main video to set such up. Another couple weeks on that one.

This one wrapped quickly, and I probably could have pushed on, but ended up not doing so; it was kind of late, and I had other stuff to work on, which fortunately did not include going in to the Burren and trying to cajole my way towards the Continuity folks, despite the events at Tynecastle that might have led to such an inclination. Tonight is Destruction, tomorrow and into the weekend I finish cutting while twiddling my thumbs and dreading production tickets. The end is in sight, but the end is not yet.

One more down; I suspect that the next one's going to be a quick cut, but since this one wasn't, I didn't roll ahead into it and try to get ahead. Regardless of this relative lack of initiative and despite the metal commitments I have going into an on-call weekend, as well as the need to do some food science this weekend as well, I should be done cutting sometime on Sunday, and ready to start editing. If I can avoid killing myself in that process, the finished video is probably not more than two weeks away.

Probably the most aggravating thing about this cut is the need to swap smart smoother in and out. When the footage needs fixed, this filter is usually sufficient, but my editing station now is pushing eight years old, and is not really up to the task of scanning through HD footage in VDub with this filter applied. It is wicked, wicked, slow and aggravating, so I continually kill the filter, scan footage, check for artifacting, and if it's significant enough to warrant, reapply the filter with default settings. The process is massively annoying, even if not especially difficult; I'll be glad to get out of it, but what comes after is the insanely difficult and likely even more annoying process of editing this video to spec.

There may be a SH120 released rapidly after SH119, depending on source availability, because I have an "easy" video planned as a backup should the "hard" version budgeted as SH119 prove actually impossible. If not, it's because I got sick of this title after doing the hard version, I ran out of good source in the process of doing said hard version, or, most likely, cancelled the hard version entirely and did the easy one as SH119. Things will develop in this regard as they end up developing.
