JOURNAL: Tom the Fish (Tom the Fish)

  • AFRICA!! 2003-10-24 13:05:42 I'm trading mixtapes to the guitarist of Lostage now. He's sending me a bunch of Japanese bands I've never heard of and I'm sending him a bunch of american/eurpeon bands that he's never heard of.

Through his bad english and my bad Japanese, I've learned we're both big fans of the Boredoms. I've also learned he's from Nara, which is famous for it's strawberries, though he doesn't know hwo to say strawberries in Engish. Nara's near Kyoto, which I'm planning to visit in fall of 04. Maybe we can see Lostage play...

I'm working on a video about my favorite subject, cats. It's not going very well, probably because the Lain one I just did was all effects and stuff and this one is straight forward. I;ve come to the conclusion that I just don't like effects, watching or making.
  • for those of you in/around Boston 2003-10-17 15:24:31 If you live around/near/in Boston, make sure to get to the Brattle Theatre this week:

I highly recommend Junkers Come Here, Avalon (by Mamoru Oshii!!!), The Returner, 2LDK and Tamala 2010.

The Red Sox losing yesterday has me down. Hopefully schlok horror and sci-fi can cheer me up...

  • tokyo rock 2003-10-13 14:58:15 Wow, I picked up some great music in Tokyo on staff reccomnedations at Disc Union. Disc Union is a chain of used & new CD stores in tokyo that are not unlike ameoba records in San Francisco. If you are ever in Japan and walk by one, walk right in!

I started writing to a few bands that I really liked and most have already started writing back. One band, hearing we were from Boston, asked if we knew about Karate, which is supercool because we once shared a bill with one of their member's side projects.
  • Tokyo Mind 2003-10-07 11:10:55 Well, I'm back from Tokyo and just about back on regular time.

Best things: 70s Krautrock wing of the Tokyo Tower Wax Museum; karaoke with the Pillows, GTO theme and Ask DNA; best sushi ever; Ghibli Museum; super cheap cels; Harajuku; Shibuya at night; Hero on the big screen; tons of Japanese punk and psych CDs with helpful record store clerks.

Worst things: Jet lag; super-crowded Disneyland; bootleg airline; Shibuya during the day; my illness denying me delicious foods; losing money in the UFO catchers (tho I finally did win my wife a Hello Kitty doll); not enough time.
  • Tokyo 2003-09-26 15:26:25 It`s 5 am in tokyo and I`m wide awake....
