  • Thoughts 2010-11-08 21:17:51 Note this is a repost of a previous journal entry that I made. I privated it after seeing some positive results come out of it for various reasons. One of which was that I didnt want to stir some ruckus if it wasn't needed. But now I'm making it public again because I do think some of it still applies. Since the original post of this, various efforts have been made to address points presented in the post in the State of The Org Address 10-13-10. Which can be read here:
    http://www.animemusicvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=101794

Please help the Org by joining the Redesign Process taking place in General AMV whether you agree with all my points or not:

I sometimes wonder if people actually realize that there is something wrong here. That this site is doing something wrong. WE'RE ACTUALLY WRONG. How else do you go from a golden age to a slump like this?

You can sit around and make excuses about everything:
    We have higher quality videos
We have a better search system
    We have feature x,y,z

If we're so much better, then why do people not want to be a part of this? If we are truly better, why do people, who've been here for a long time, leave? What about the new people?

Can you honestly blame it all on just the members of the site? Maybe we're all just big pretentious douche bags. Maybe we're all just too soft. Maybe we're all just as blame worthy when it comes to being circle jerks. But honestly, I don't think that's even the problem anymore.

I think this community needs to move on. I feel like we're stuck with the same people seen as the 'top' members. A lot of these people are barely even active anymore, but I feel like they hold the most influence. The thing is they're not bad people. A lot of them are great people. A lot of them are intelligent, but I question if their presence is beneficial or harmful.

It's not so much that their presence is harmful, rather, they bring interesting things to the community. A lot of these people have taken their interest in video and fx and have gone beyond AMVs and when we see their influence in some videos, the outcome is astounding, but their influence seems to outnumber that of the people that could carry this community into a new age.

Here, I'm talking about the editors that just do it for fun. They love anime and they like putting it to music. It's as simple as that. Some like to edit raw. Some like to edit with FX. The list goes on, but we've lost a lot of those people over the years and the ones that are here aren't heard.

I feel like there are a lot of great ideas floating around and see people run back and forth in site feedback brainstorming and debating, but so much gets put on hold and never is given an answer or some type of response. I mean it's one thing to say 'no' and it's an entirely other issue, when you're just not getting back to us on things that put forth. I mean if you were to at least deny a request for something new or different, it at least means you've given it thought. The Live Action subforum should've been given an answer by now. It's been months. The same applies to the Introduction subforum and the bug that i left a notice about in the mod dropbox just a little over a month ago. STILL, nothing has happened. Flat out, I feel ignored. I feel like everyone is being ignored.

I applaud the Org for implementing more features in the past year. They've really picked up pace in that regard, but I only applaud it because of how little was done before. Things are better now, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're great.

This site is not just about making AMVs, but about bringing people together who like AMVs, anime, and music. If you treat it as one without the other, it breaks. This is what has happened in recent times.

A lot of people only hang out here because their friends are here. That's not really bad, but when the community begins lacking in the AMV, anime, and music enthusiasts, that's when it hurts.

Another thing that's just frustrating about this is that because we're not given an Administrative/Mod decision on a lot of things, people get mad at each other. A regular member shouldn't be the one needed to tell people to treat someone nice or defend them or know when to be harsh. It just puts us against each other. It's caused a lot of us to become fanatics with no middle ground because we feel like we have to make up for the lack of friendliness or critique at time. My God, I do not want to have to make up for anything or anyone else on this site anymore. I don't want to feel obligated that when someone is getting picked on, I have to go say something nice or that if everyone is just being really soft that I have to give some type of critique to make up for that because someone feels like they're being flamed or not benefiting from critique. It's ridiculous, but we're all just trying to give this site some type of balance, but in the end, we're just all over the place and we walk over our own feet and goals.

I noticed this when I defended someone's video recently, who really didn't need defending. I mean the entire thread was filled with people praising the video and one person, just ONE person made a negative comment and I jumped on them because it really wasn't all that beneficial/constructive and I looked back on that and thought 'What the hell did I just do?'

I only wanted to make this a better place and more welcoming. I wanted everyone who came here to enjoy their time here for whatever reason they choose to come here. I know that's what most of us want for this site, too, but some of us are starting to get in each others way.

In end, I've heard a million arguments as to why the Org is the way it is now. 'The members suck' 'There isnt enough quality feedback' 'They're aren't enough features' 'The site is hard to navigate' 'It's too cliquey'

I'm tired of it. Flat out, if the Org and it's community has all these problems, then the Org really isn't as great as it's made out to be and shouldn't put itself on a pedestal anymore. We do a lot of stuff wrong and WE SUCK. Acknowledge that we suck.

I no longer think we're better than YouTube. I really dont. There are a lot of videos there to watch and there are a lot of amazing editors who put a lot of heart into their work there, just because you haven't put much effort into finding them, doesn't mean that they aren't there.

We are not the pinnacle of the AMVs and the AMV community. We may have been at one point, but we're no where near that anymore. We need to acknowledge that so we can move on.

Happy 10th Anniversary in 2 months Org.
  • @Nya 2010-10-13 12:22:58 I've already tried to change it. Which I already stated in my journal post.
