Progress Report #2
2003-11-04 06:37:22
Went to bed very early last night, so no progress until this morning. Filled in a couple of holes in the bridge, which is now complete; currently filling in a hole in the build-up to the revenge scene. Did the math; after this, there'll be 1:26 left to lay down, and then some overlays to work on.
I do wonder whether people who've seen Perfect Blue are going to look at this and go "Huh?", because I'm turning a character who's at best Mima's ally and at worst an innocent victim into a villain who's at best a pornographer and at worst an accessory to rape.
I think after this video's done, I want to do either another comedy video or a sappy romance video, just to get the taste out of my mouth.

Progress Report #1
2003-11-03 02:04:58
Since there's this nice journal feature and all, I thought I'd use it to track my progress on whatever I happen to be working on at the time.
Right now, that's "Innocence and Lies", a Perfect Blue video set to "Away" by The Bolshoi. I doubt anyone's going to recognise the song, though it's one of my favourites; they usually play it every Friday night at my favourite nightclub in Houston. I'm not using the eight-minute extended dance mix though. ^_^;;I first saw Perfect Blue on VHS about three years ago, and immediately thought of "Away" as the perfect accompaniment.
I'm trying something fairly ambitious with this video. A few years ago, I saw Kestrel's Utena video to "After the Fall" and fell madly in love with it -- not because it's got incredible special effects or even great visual quality, but for the story it told. It's a relatively straightforward Touga/Nanami/Akio love triangle video -- or would be, if the series HAD a Touga/Nanami/Akio love triangle. I love this video because it takes visuals that are intended to tell one story, and fuses them with a song to create a story which never existed before. That's basically what I'm trying to do with "Innocence and Lies". I'm not sure whether it'll succeed or not, but I hope it does.
So, where am I right now? As of this writing, according to the little Navigator bar in Premiere I'm a little more than half done laying footage down. I may have to go back and replace a couple of scenes, though, because the story took a strange twist on me as I was in the process of editing, and now there may be two scenes that don't quite fit. We'll see. Once I'm through laying down the main video track, there are a couple of places I want to flash overlay some clips to break up some longer setup scenes (in the beginning) with some foreshadowing for later, so I'll say "a bit less than half done" and leave it at that.
And, once again, I'm learning things about footage the hard way. I think I finally understand how AVISynth is supposed to work, but it won't be working on this particular video, because I ripped to the wrong codec from a DVD that I borrowed from a friend in the department, and while I could get it back from him, it would be an enormous pain to remaster all the stuff I did off the first VOB, which I trimmed partway in. Yargh. Well, you live, you learn. If nothing else, I think I can make it look relatively nice in post-production, and the point of this video is really the story anyway.
More news as it happens. Gonna finish up the bridge and hit the sack now.
