Ok, that really helps, thanks guys. Definitely worth a shot once I get this thing uploaded. Cheers!
I know what you mean about daytime problems. I'm in the UK, so when I'm up and doing, a whole parcel of folk are asleep. Ah well. *g*
I confess, I tend to read journals out of curiosity a fair bit as well. Some of it's kinda hard to follow, but the journal junkies usually manage to raise a smile. :)

Infinity Squared...

That makes sense. The Journal Junkies certainly seem to be a close knit and friendly community! To be honest I only very recently realised that one could have a community through the journals, and indeed how to communicate through them - I puzzled over the lack of "comment" options for a few confused minutes. *g* Hence, I doubt very much whether I have people following my journal, after all I was only really writing for my own amusement.
That's ok though. Oh, and I should add, this isn't/wasn't a veiled request for people to volunteer to beta test - just a straightforward question. When I'm requesting I tend to be a little more upfront about it. :)

Heading for the finishing line

Wow. After much... stuff... I've nearly completed my first beta. Question is, what next? What's the beta etiquette like on the forum? I know it's an accepted thing that you can ask for beta ops in the Opinion Exchange section, but that's a little random for me. What I'd like to do is ask for beta ops from people who I know are into the genre or the anime that I've been working with, although I'm a bit stumped as to how to do that. Seems a little rude to just pm people (especially being something of a newcomer on the boards) and ask for ops, although that hasn't stopped me in one case already. *g* What does everyone else do?

Who knew making clips would take so long? Actually, scratch that, probably everyone who has ever made an amv before knows how long it takes to make Huffy clips - it's just a far longer job than I anticipated.
I have a feeling that a lot of that may be due to the way I'm getting the clips, or more accurately, choosing them. Before my new materials arrived through the post I had already been hard at work planning how this amv was going to go. I knew more or less which scenes fit with which lyrics, and moods, and had a story shape and concept to work with. Which is all well and good, but then I realised that that only dealt with the verses. What about the instrumental intro? Or the spaces between verses? Argh! Cue much wondering which images or scenes would fit best, and a general lack of focus. Lack of focus = a ton more clips, as I've discovered. I figure once I get into the editing program and try a few things out I'll get a feel for how things move and look, but until then it's clips a-go-go.
Then there's the fact that going through the series slowly like this gives me a much better appreciation of the artistry that has gone into it. I find myself wanting to capture the best scenes, the pieces with particular directorial flare. I've started noticing things like perspective, focus, thematic devices... and wanting to use them. Which, you guessed it, has meant more clips getting made. After all, you can't make too many, right? It's better to have too much choice than not enough, right? Right??
Oh yeah, and then there's the fact that I know I'm going to be using wmm for my editing. Knowing that my editing program offers me so little in the way of options means that I've gone out of my way to try to provide myself with options at the clips stage. When you can't do anything groovy with your clips once they're made it doesn't half make you more aware of what you do include in the ones you make.
Cripes, and now this has turned into a rant. Oh well. *g* 8 of 13 episodes now thoroughly gone through and clipped. That's over half, even if it has taken me something stupid like 3 weeks. Argh. Must... work... faster... !
Now the question is - to crash or not to crash? I'm off to the 6am dawn Easter service on top of the local hill, and it's 3am now. Does staying up and making Huffy clips count as an Easter vigil? Probably not, eh.
Anyway... enough for now. Later.

And so it begins...

Ok, brief intro.
I'm an amv lurker. I've been a member of the org for a year or so, enjoying the fabulous bounty of videos that this place has to offer. I used amvs more or less as a source for discovering and exploring different anime series, but never thought seriously about making a video of my own, at least, not until now. A few weeks ago I finished watching Haibane Renmei, and decided that now was the time. I just had to try my hand at making an amv for myself.
I read the guides. I reread the guides. I bought the CD with the song I wanted on it. I ripped the DVD footage I needed... and then promptly realised two things.
1. My computer was so low on RAM that filtered avs scripts flowed with about the same speed and consistency as molasses. 256MB is officially NOT ENOUGH.
2. I didn't have nearly enough hard drive space on which to store any HuffYUVs that I might make. The Vobs were taking up quite enough space as it was. 40GBs is officially NOT ENOUGH. *g*
So... I did what any self-respecting student does. I blew my books and materials grant on extra RAM and a nice sized hard drive, both of which arrived literally five minutes ago. I'm sat here looking at my lovely 250GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM with a silly smile on my face, because here and now, the editing begins. My first amv may turn out to be useless, it may be that I can't edit for toffee, however good my ideas look in my imagination. But however it turns out, it starts here.
Be afraid... Be very afraid.
I certainly am.
