Imperialism Formal Writing Assignment II
There were many differing opinions during the late 1800's to early 1900's regarding
imperialism and whether it was right or wrong to culturally dominate another country. Was the
policy of forced native labor a correct one? Or was it justification for British exploitation
of native people and natural resources?
Some people like Cecil Rhodes stated that “ I contend that we are the finest
race in the world and that the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the
human race” he whole heartily believed that the mission of white Anglo-Saxon people
was to literally inhabit the world with British people and control its destiny with their
supposedly “superior” culture. Still others such as Joseph Chamberlain wanted England to
maintain of control Africa, India and parts of Asia for the possible economic boost it would
give to England and to use “every legitimate opportunity to extend our influence and
control in that great African continent.”
There were many people who criticized this influx of Imperialism. John Atkinson
Hobson an economist and leader of social reform stated that “The condition of these lower
races is distinctively parasitic; they live upon these natives, their chief work being that of
organizing native labor for their support”
Still others where forced to live through horrible weather, native attacks and forced to
kill large groups of mostly unarmed natives. Like Richard Meinertzhagan stationed in Kenya
from 1902 - 1906 for the British military “I gave orders that every living thing except children
should be killed without mercy” and later mentioned that “My drastic action on this occasion
haunted me for many years”.
These long tours of duty in foreign counties caused mental and physical instability in
these steadfast troops because, they had no cultural link to the people around them.
They constantly thought of hobbies and ways to keep moral up these soldiers did not see their
families for years at a time. Many of the tours lasted 4 to 5 years in the harsh African climates
and surround by danger and brutality on a constant basis .
Well as mentioned before some people like Cecil Rhodes believed that the white
race was meant to control these areas and take them from any native ownership. Still others
like in the Poem “White Man’s Burden” in our main text book, thought these people needed
our guidance to reform their “back words” ways. Joseph Chamberlain claimed “I maintain that
our rule does, and has, brought security and peace and comparative prosperity to countries that
never knew these blessings before” Richard Meinertzhagan saw them as a threat an
influence that could taint ones mind. “ It is hard to resist the savagery of Africa when one
falls under its spell. One soon reverts to one’s ancestral character, both mind and temperament
becoming brutalized and I have felt the magnetic power of the African climate drawing me lower and lower to the level of a savage.” John Atkinson Hobson considered the
Imperialists as the monsters living off the manual labor of the African populace.
The native peoples felt abused and mistreated by their European counterparts.
They rebelled often and in several cases killing local white policemen and settlers. The natives
also brutally mistreated the already dead corpses. These little rebellions against the imperialists
where put down mercilessly by even hired African tribesmen. As quoted in Richard
Meinertzhagan’s dairy entries “Another levy was leading a small girl by the hand and was about
to knock her on the head with his knobkerrie [ a short club with a knob at the end]”
these battles when once responded to were one-side.
In the final analysis was this policy wrong? For at the time foreign nations
required those resources to feed there counties during the Industrial Revolution. Once more
the land and resources to wage war and defend it’s borders. I suppose it’s human nature to feed
on the weaker groups like a parasite using manifest destiny as spring board .
Was this policy right ? We will probably never know.
