The Hard Job of Labelling a Genre
2018-05-02 22:11:35
It's been a couple of weeks since I finished my latest video, posted it online via Youtube and Google Drive (still waiting for the admin to confirm my source as an anime before I can upload it here, as I'm the first person here to list Girls' Last Tour as an AMV source) started sending it to contests. As I submit my video into various contests, I am confronted with a small issue: my latest video is one of those videos where it's kinda hard to list it under just genre.
To give you an idea of just how challenging it is to classify my video when it comes to contest categories, here's a summary of what's been going on the last two weeks in terms of contest submissions:
My personal classification: Personally, my video is like Rider4Z's "The Optimists" (the one video that served as an influence for this project) in that it's somewhere between Sentimental and Upbeat. If there's one specific category I'd place it under, it would be Sentimental because while the video does have a few lighthearted moments that would make it upbeat, at the heart of it, I was going for a more sentimental approach when making the video.
Anime Expo: When it came to choosing a category for the video at Anime Expo, I listed it as a Sentimental video. Personally, I wasn't surprised that the people running the contest considered moving the video to a different category, as I myself didn't really have an idea of what category to place this video under. In the end, the video is listed in the Drama category. While I do have some concerns about the placement due to some of the sillier moments featured in the video (I don't want my video to be accused of being in the wrong category, even though that decision was made by the AX Staff), I still respect the decision to move the video to drama.
AnimeNext: With that convention, people submitting videos can choose up to four categories that they felt best fit the video. For me, I chose the pair that best describe the video IMO, Sentimental and Fun. At the same time, I also chose Character Profile and Uplifting as additional categories.
Anime Mid-Atlantic: When it came to their contest, I read the Romance category as just that: 100% romance videos. As such, when it came to that convention, I'm initially submitting it as an Upbeat video. However, in the email with the links to the entry form and video, I also sent a note explaining that given how hard it is to categorize my video, I was perfectly fine if the contest head moved it to another category.
AMV League: with me finding one AMV League event that would allow it to be entered there without fear of it breaking the Otakon anti-troll rule (unless I get an idea that's too good not to do before I start work on my fall video, and said idea can be considered PG-13 or tamer, I currently plan to submit my latest video at Otakon), I've submitted the video for one of those events. In terms of category, I eventually went with Drama, as I felt that category consisted of both regular Drama and Sentimental videos.

Summer AMV Plans
2018-04-18 15:25:21
Just got done working on what I planned to be my main AMV for the summer season. My current plans in terms of the video are as follows:
Anime Expo: Just submitted it for that con alongside an entry for the TV Intro category. If an idea for another Intro/Commercial parody comes up between now and the deadline for those categories (that deadline tends to later than the main contest), then I may do another video. Otherwise, all the stuff I plan to submit for AX this year is already entered.
June Cons/Online Distribution: I want to make sure things are squared away in terms of Anime Expo before I submit this to other cons. As for online distribution, I'm hoping to get it up by the end of the week (again, I'm waiting to see things are all right when it comes to Anime Expo before I can continue, giving me time to complete my notes on the video).
Otakon: Currently, I plan to make this video my Otakon entry. However, with the late deadline for the contest this year, there's a chance that I may come up with a great AMV idea that, if I manage to complete before the deadline (and before I begin work on a project that I planned to do for the fall conventions), may end up being my Otakon video in its place.

AMV Progress Report: June 26
2015-06-26 12:16:05
Main Summer Video: Following the video's showing at Anime Mid Atlantic, I uploaded the video here, with the initial star count being what I was expecting in terms of how I expect others to react to it. As for other facets in terms of video distribution:
AMV.org Message Board Announcement: That is still up in the air. I want to hold off until the finalists for the Otakon AMV Contest are announced before I make an official decision. However, I may end up making the "announcement" before that (as in possibly the next few days).
Youtube: My plan is to hold off on that until after Otakon, as my roommate at the convention tends to use that to watch AMV's, and I'm hoping to keep this video a surprise to him.
Project 1: Outside of what I did on Saturday, not much progress here.
Project 2: The video is current past the 75% mark in terms of initial editing. The past four days have been slow due to me being busy on other things (i.e. work, Arkham Knight, Six Flags) and the fact that I wasn't satisfied with the visual quality of one of my sources (with me having to replace one scene using with with another anime). However, I'm got a couple more scenes done, and I am busy doing my research in terms of finding other scenes and anime to incorporate into the video.

Quick Updates on a Couple Projects
2015-06-20 11:58:03
Project 1: Finally been able to incorporate a non-anime (but still Japanese related) idea that I wanted to include in the video. I'm sure fans of a certain 1990's cable series will get a kick out of it.
Project 2: I've incorporated a couple more anime titles into the video, and with the editing I've done yesterday and this morning, I'm now around 70% complete with the initial editing (with the song's bridge portion now complete).

AMV Progress Report
2015-06-19 11:49:27
Since I'm finally making actual AMV's, I might as well return to the using the journal function to keep track of my progress in terms of projects.
Main Summer Video: The video that I made for Otakon officially premiered at the AnimeNext overflow this past Sunday, with it making the finals of Anime Mid-Atlantic this weekend. I'm still debating when I should upload the video here, as I do want to keep it a surprise to my usual roommate at Otakon (although I plan to hold off the Youtube upload until then).
Project 1: Currently, I'm halfway through the "first" stage of the first AMV project that I started on since completing my summer video. Given how this project requires a lot of planning and research (and my current editing focus going towards the second project), this is on the back burner at the moment, although I do take advantage whenever I come up with another idea to incorporate into the video.
Project 2: I'm a little over two-thirds complete in terms of completing a "beta" version. I really hope to have the full beta complete by Otakon weekend in order to get an opinion from my roommate in case I need to polish some elements before getting the "final" version ready for the fall.
Other Projects: I have another idea for a possible AMV. However, I want to make sure Project 2 is completed before I start work on that one.
