Weekends...
2002-12-31 12:53:35
This will be a short one - mostly due to the fact that I haven't accomplished much since my last entry. Hey, I'm nothing if not honest. The weekend came and along with it came family Christmas celebrations. So, I had to leave my comfortable nest in Ames and drive down to Knoxville for an entire weekend full of family Christmas fun!
Don't get me wrong - I love my family, and I really enjoyed myself. Still, its hard to work on AMV's while playing games with the fam.
So, on the agenda for this week will be to finish watching the series. Oh, such work that will be. ;) Then I need to begin the tedious process of scene selection. I imagine this will take quite some time. The thing that I notice about most Trigun vids that I see is that most seem to use scenes from only 3 or 4 episodes - usually either the first 4 episodes or the last 4. I really hope that I am able to choose a nice mix of scenes from all episodes rather than concentrating on just a couple. I already know, however that my intro will rely heavily on episode 14.
Think I'll order a new DVD drive for my computer as well. My current DVD is a 4x and I think that may be too slow to extract the amount of data I'd like. Time to hit newegg.com!

The one thing that I know
2002-12-28 10:33:29
"This is the one thing that I know"
That is the dominant lyric in the song "Liquid" by Jars of Clay. "Liquid" of course being the song I chose to use for this Trigun AMV. Its funny when I think back and realized that I have had this idea for this project in my mind for over a year! Now that the ball is finally starting to roll, I am amazed that I waited this long.
I remember that night... the Blue Sub vid was almost finished (this of course being roughly a week before the hard drive crash) - I was thinking to the future and of what project might tackle next. I didn't have a particular song in mind, so I decided to simply go through my CD collection and listen for something that might be nice. "Liquid" is the first track on Jars of Clay's self-titled album and as soon as I heard it, I knew it was something special.
Now, as I proceed with the project, I listen to the song often. I want to know the song inside and out. Lately, when I've heard the song, I begin to doubt my choice. The song is not a typical AMV tune - there are no electronic beats, no amplified power chords. The vid will not be an action video. To me, that fact alone doubles the difficulty of my task. But, I know in my heart that my idea from over a year ago still holds merit and that I want to see it through to completion.
"This is the one thing that I know..." - What is the one thing that Vash knows? I believe it is what was taught to him by Rem Saverem - "No one has the right to take the life of another." Vash knows this and sculpts his life around it, although time and time again his philosophy causes him great pain. (both physical and emotional)
I want to focus on this in my video. His total dedication to this single concept while everything is telling him otherwise is extremely meaningful to me. I haven't seen a video that zeroes in on this before and I think it needs to be made. The sacrifice he makes in order to live up to his own ideals... I want people to FEEL that...

The beat goes on
2002-12-27 09:35:24
Hopped down to the DVD store last night and picked up the Trigun boxed set. Sure, like most of my anime collection, I have Trigun rips downloaded and burned onto SVCD. However, unlike my attempt at the Blue Sub vid, I'm going to do this up right. I'm certainly not going to release a video that used pirate footage.
I watched the first 9 eps last night. Sometimes I forget just how much I love this series. It gets better every time. Sometimes I feel "unworthy" looking at other people's lists of their all-time favorite anime. So many people have cool lists of obscure, less-mainstream titles. I look at mine - Trigun, Bebop, Eva, FLCL, Lain... Pretty standard stuff. But then I just have to remember how much enjoyment I get out of those titles. They are exceptional creations. I don't care if even the newbiest anime fans have seen and loved Trigun - it is my favorite, and that is that.
So, over the course of the next few days, I'm going to take in the whole series, just watching it, keeping a loose eye out for scenes I might use. But more than anything, just to get reaccquainted with the details so I'll be prepared to lay out my story board. Really, the storyboard is already laid out in my head, but I want to make sure I don't miss anything important. Plus, it gives me an excuse to enjoy Trigun yet another time. =)

New Beginnings
2002-12-26 16:57:02
I think I'll start today. How many times have I told myself that? Here I sit with all these wonderful ideas, yet each day passes and nothing gets done.
Maybe that will change soon.
I love AMV's. I visit the site here often and am always looking for fresh new work. It is amazing to me what kind of work people are capable of even when there is no compensation involved. That's when you know it is a true labor of love.
I started an AMV once. The song was "Leader of Men" by Nickelback set to "Blue Submarine #6." Hey, I thought it was pretty decent, but I learned the harsh lesson that comes from not backing up my work. A hard drive crash ruined that vid, along with my drive to continue.
So, too long have I waited to begin anew. I think I'll get started today. I've got a few ideas floating around which I think could be amazing if implemented well. I'll start with Trigun. I know, I know... there are enough Trigun vids out there. True... but not nearly enough good Trigun vids.
I'm going to get started and I'll post my progress here periodically. If I learned anything from my experience with the Blue Sub vid, its is to back up my work, and not to work too quickly. Trying to get it done as fast as possible won't make the best quality vid.
