JOURNAL: yoshi1013 (Derek Lieu)

  • Yahooga! 2001-11-04 14:34:37 Haven't had much to say recently 'cause I've been a little upset at some friends of my roommates who are rather disaggreable people in that they hate almost everyone (good way to live life don't you think? Makes you happier)

I'm at work right now, spent about half of it writing my essay about the use of sound in James Cameron's "Aliens." This could quite possibly be the first paper I have more to say than the page minimum will let me say, yay research and blathering. Well actually I haven't blathered much yet, everything's been pretty to the point, but rather detailed I suppose, but that's the best way to make a paper longer, details.

In the amv community I've been getting some good reviews, in fact I got two really really glowing reviews for my Liberi Fatali and Rei video from the same person, THANKS ISERLOHN, you're the best!! Though you'd have to review those videos to read those nice reviews *hint hint*. Haha, shameless I know, I like reviews like everyone else. I've had a pretty good review/download ratio for my Rei video though I wish I had more (why wouldn't I?) I have about a 1:75 review/download ratio for my Liberi Fatali video and about a 30:1 ratio for my Rei video. Pretty good compared to many of the complaints I've heard.
  • FINALLY!!! 2001-11-02 11:52:51 AH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!! He's lost his mind! I calculated spending about 36 hours on my Rei video and it's finally online for download!!! Though keep in mind I counted 8 hours of capturing and 16 hours of encoding, which was also 8 hours that were needless since I made a mistake, but live and learn.

Most importantly my video is online and I finally have some good settings to use for future MPEG encodings. The video turned out looking very good in MPEG, not reference quality by any means but better than anything I've made before. Most importantly is that when it's set on full screen, the lines don't look jagged like they have in the past which makes me very happy : )

I also have already received one opinion (albeit short) which made me happy. But what was weird was it was generally very high scores but then a re-viewability of 2, I sent an email asking about their reasoning and eagerly await since a rating of 2 implies they didn't even finish watching the video. I've only done that on a few occasions but if I was writing a review for them I made a point of watching it at least twice just to be fair.
  • Hmmmm, I must be a genius 2001-11-01 21:24:21 Because one setting I did gave me one file for the MPEG and one file for the audio. I guess I should've chosen mp2 format for the audio because then they're combined into one. As it is right now I have an audio file bigger than my video which is about 40.2 MB. I guess uncompressed PCM was a really stupid choice. Oh well, live and learn. The good thing is that the MPEG encoding turned out to look much better than I thought it would. I'm sort of using my cowboy bebop video as a reference since there was a lot of pixelation from cut to cut sometimes but this video turned out looking great. Not as good as videos of someone like say ErMaC, but still I'm very satisfied, good enough that a re-encode isn't really warranted. Cool beans.
  • Encoding is fun...... 2001-11-01 12:13:15 No, just kidding, encoding really isn't fun at all, takes up so much time that I could be using my computer with. I'm so dependent on my computer for entertainment it's really not funny. Last night and some of this morning I spent playing with settings in Media Cleaner 5 trying to get really good settings but keep my video under 49 MB since that's all the space I have. I could do a much better encode if the lowest bitrate it went to was around 300k/sec but I'd never be able to upload it because of web space. So I have to settle for something not as good so that I can upload it for people to see. Maybe I'll just encode a higher resolution one for myself or something.

Since I only figured out the technical aspects of transfering my videos to tape during my last video experience I'm still on this giddy kick where watching my videos on a TV without pixelation is a real thrill for me. It's cool 'cause seeing it on a TV makes it seem so much more official than watching an MPEG. When I left home Cleaner 5 said that it had 3.5 hours left just to analyze the video for the variable bitrate info, so I guess it won't be done until I'm all done with classes, damn that sucks.

Gotta go to Writing class right now and see what they think of the first few pages I've written, should be fun.
  • JOY!!!! 2001-10-31 12:53:09 I finished my Rei video!! I stayed up until 3:00 am trying to some crazy effect that I ended up ditching because it didn't work in the context of the video. I'm trying to figure out how much time I spent making this video right now. I know that capturing alone from the DVDs using all the computers at work still must've taken at least a total of 8 hours. Editing, let's see. I spent at least two hours today, maybe four hours yesterday maybe two hours the day before and I dunno two to four hours on the weekend. So I guess 10-12 hours maybe. Wow, lots of time but I think the effort paid off in the end.

Now I'm going through the terrible ordeal of converting to MPEG and de-interlacing and all that crap which still won't yield the best possible MPEG in the end since I'm a stupid mac user who has to use software that's not nearly as good as free software for the PC. Maybe after my roommate (who has a PC) gets his new hard drive for his broken computer I can copy my video and use TMPGEnc which would look fantastic, at least I hope it will. I should probably have the video online by Nov 1st or 2nd depending on how it all goes.
