JOURNAL: Arigatomina

  • gragh! 2006-11-03 16:28:05 I can't play amvs on my computer! I finally get a nice 1hr slot of time to watch a few vids and my comp locks up on me. I can't open wmp or winamp for music, either, or it snags 2.5 seconds in. The damn thing locked up on Quattro Pro 10 last night, too, so it's not just the video/audio players (ffdshow being a bitch). There's something wrong with my baby. 0_0

Not sure what to do. Thought about making a backup of the important files and tossing it, and everything movable, onto my external drive. Then I could send the comp itself over to radioshack and still have the stuff that matters (or 120gigs of it) in case the entire computer gets fried.

But it's not sick! It's not my internet connection - I downloaded the vid just fine (took 6 minutes, excellent). I've been surfing the site for a half hour now and no lock-ups. I can open any video I want (avisynth scripts included) in Virtualdub and skim the footage. I can mess with Windows Movie Maker and Premiere and Showbiz just fine. It's only when I try to play an audio or video file in one of them that it snags (ffdshow???).

But it does it randomly with other programs, too. Like when I try to type something into a wordprocessing program (or any of the "Word Perfect Productivity Pack" programs), or WordPad or NotePad. Or when I try to use PhotoImpression4. Usually when I have computer problems inolving my media players it kills my internet surfing, too. I haven't had any lockups with IE or Opera, or BitLord or MIRC. That just doesn't make sense because it's those extra ports - for the wireless and the external harddrive - interfering with each other - that usually causes my occasional lockup problems.

Virus, maybe? It seems to be getting worse. I can usually undo virus problems just by doing a system restore and setting things back a few days. That's not working. Either it's a problem that started a while ago and is just now getting noticeable, or it's not the sort of 'virus/bug' you can just reset and be done with.

Blegh. I'm gonna try SpyBot Search&Destroy again. The consolation is - this time I have an external drive so I can back my entire collection of files if I have to reset my entire computer. Should be do-able. Just as long as I don't start getting lockups when I use NeroStartSmart to burn files onto dvdr. That's funny, too. I can't write on a txt fic in WordPad without my computer locking up, but it can sit for 5hrs making a dvd of amvs without having a single snag. That's just not logical.

I don't have money for radioshack right now. Gotta mess around some more and save up some paychecks. Wish me luck, eh? When things go weird with my computer I tend to make them a thousand times worse before I finally fix things (without ever knowing exactly what it was I did that fixed things). Good thing it's the weekend.

  • it's not the driver, it's the car 2006-11-01 17:35:15 I admit that I pay little to no attention to MEP's because I don't work well with others. Even if self esteem and competition wasn't an issue, I don't produce on demand. Can't. Won't. So I tend to ignore them untill they're finished and watchable. But I've glanced over a few links and seen a change that makes me curious.

The org as a collective, namely the forum-posting members - have we finally stopped pretending it's not the editing program but the person using it that matters? People used to say it. I got it alot myself, even got linked a few times as a reference. That old "it's not the program but what you can get from it" line. Are we finished using that line, or is it just a few people being bolder these days? If you suck on a basic editing program, you're just going to suck even worse when you try using something more complicated. That's life. A bad driver is going to lose the race no matter how expensive his car is because he can't stay on the road.

That said, I don't see any reason for people to exclude editors from an MEP based on the program they use. Do it because they suck as editors. Do it for a reason that makes sense. Or, if you're doing it because of the program, explain why that program can't be allowed in the project. Does the project require radial blurs or some specific effect that can't be done in WMM? If so, then that's a legitimate reason to exclude WMM-only users. But if that user suplements WMM with PhotoImpression (which can *do* radial blurs just like Premiere), then you have to let the person in. If you exclude WMM because it's default export isn't the right fps, that's fine. But if that person can write a quick avisynth script to make it the right fps, you have to let him in. Same for quality - a bit of mftoon and you can't tell the difference between wmm and Premiere exports. See? Even if you're specific, you still can't say "WMM isn't allowed because it can't do the things required for the project". I've yet to see something in an amv that can't be done with photoshopping and a lot of free time. If the WMM user wants in, and he can reproduce the After Effects effects required for the project, you have to let him in.

It's so much easier to just say "sucky editors need not apply". It's not the program. It's the bad driver.

That said, I'm sure there are cases where it's the car and not the driver at fault. The best driver in the world won't win the Grand Prix in a car that maxes out at 80mph. Won't happen. If the project honestly requires extensive familiarity with a program to keep the consistency of the effects used in each segment, then that's a legitimate reason to exclude those who don't have the required program, or who aren't familiar enough with the required effect. But even then, familiarity depends on the person and not the program. You can have Premiere for years and never notice the keyframes, let alone specific effects.

Yeah, I still think it's the editor who sucks and not the program he's using. My wmm vids are better than my Premiere vids. It's true. If you take a poor editor and give him an even more complicated program, he's going to be even worse. So just be honest about it - you're excluding people who suck (and just happen to use a basic program), it has nothing to do with the program itself. Or if it's an effect project, say you're refusing any programs that don't come with those effects already packaged and ready for use - in which case you can always share the program for the duration of the project and have no excuse to exclude people based on program alone. If a person is a good editor, it shouldn't take him long at all to pick up the custom effects in a new editing program.

Meh. We need an effectless MEP. No overlays, just fades and cuts. If done right it would be absolutley lovely (I like effectless videos because the footage is easier to see). And the program wouldn't matter one little bit. Then everyone who was excluded would be excluded honestly - because they suck, and not because the person running the project dislikes certain programs.
  • Cute QC 2006-10-31 00:52:26 2006-10-30 22:51:36Eww. Yoai. And furries. Ewww. Good vid though

I cackled. ^^ Wanted to share and memoralize it.

It's for "Animal Attraction". Makes me regret not naming it "Bestiality" like I originally wanted. Furries, huh? Pfft. Blame Sailor Moon monsters. I admit the yaoi, but I never thought of the animal/monster crack as 'furry' material. Makes me proud. ^^

The closest I've come to 'furries' is doing improper things with Youko Kurama's tail in fanfiction, and even then, I never published the scenes. Long fur just makes things way too messy. Keh. Furries. ;p
  • qc 2006-10-28 11:38:09 2006-10-27 10:55:18 I give it a 1 cuz I can

Good for you, man. ;p If you'd gone ahead and done it without leaving the qc, I probably wouldn't have noticed.

    I got a laugh out of that one because I stopped watching Sleepless a little while ago. It's one away from 100 stars. At this rate it'll take a few months for this one to get enough to settle into a real score. A few immediate 1s would help, but I think the fellow above actually left a 3 because the score didn't drop much at all. ^^;

Still, it's a funny qc. I read people saying they want qcs if a person leaves a 1 so they know *why* the 1 was left. "cuz I can" is a legitimate reason, but somehow I don't think it would make those people happier to hear it. Me, I'd much rather hear from the people leaving 4s and 5s - more interested in why they *like* a vid. I can guess why they'd hate it on my own. ;p
  • Re: Maricela & Loveless at Yaoi-con 2006-10-25 18:16:14 Meh. My opinion doesn't count for much. I was sitting in front of a handful of girls who complained - loudly - with every new video that showed. I might not have noticed the Loveless videos as much if it weren't for them. Then there's the fact that I was hoping for a Sukisyo video. I blame Loveless for there not being any of those. I like Loveless, but I like Sukisyo a lot more, and I get the feeling yaoi fans in general prefer Loveless just because of the catboy aspect. It's like seeing my favorite anime not get the love I think it deserves. So I have a lot of bias regarding the issue.

I don't know if the other side of the audience had as much of a problem as the girls behind me did. All I know is that Loveless is a short series, and any video featuring the main pairing is going to feature the best scenes in the series. That's natural. Unfortunately with a couple Loveless videos that means you're seeing the same scenes in every one of them. Hell, even when I used a few Loveless clips I ended up using the same scenes we'd already seen in the other Loveless-only vids. I didn't say there was anything wrong with the videos themselves. In fact, as soon as I saw the picture video I knew it would get best technical. I just had trouble appreciating the Loveless videos on their own merit when I had the girls behind me, my own preference for Sukisho (which never showed), and those same scenes in each one. I still plan to download the individual videos. I just didn't like seeing them all in one sitting. They hurt each other, in my opinion, playing within minutes of each other. Each new one made the last one less significant. You'd get that with any popular anime when there are more than two submitted to the same con. That's why you hear complaints about Naruto all the time.

As for the songs...they were just weird to me. My own songs are weird to other people. That doesn't mean I don't like them. I just wasn't expecting to hear them at a yaoi-con. I expected more pop favorites and girly bands like Evanescence. Getting songs from The Princess Bride and Sleeping Beauty was fun, but it was still weird because I wasn't expecting it. Which reminds me, I must have been the only one in the audience who'd never heard that foreign language song. They were stomping along with the beat and going crazy and I was sitting there with a confused look on my face trying to figure out if the lyrics were in English and I just wasn't understanding them, or if the song were a recent favorite I just missed because I don't listen to the radio. Weird doesn't mean bad, it means strange, other than normal, and for me, unexpected. :(
