  • *twitch* 2001-11-27 13:51:40 I've always refused to read Cowboy Bebop fanfiction, primarily on the principle that no fanfic can be as good as the show. Out of curiosity from Machine's post in the Off Topic forum, though, I decided to at least see what fanfics were on ffnet.

    *twitch*
My reasons for avoiding Bebop fanfics were definitely sound. The first fic I see? "It's Ed+Faye! It's really good, trust me!" *retch* WTF?!?!
Next was 4 character vignettes at the end of the series - actually very well-written, although I thought the ending to the Spike one could have been a bit better. With regard to his thoughts, that is.
And then we have the long string of Spike+Faye fics.
Do I really need to say more on that?
It's just... no. Spike and Faye are not, and were not, a couple. They just wouldn't *work* as a couple. I read the reviews on one of the fics, though, just to see what others thought of this coupling.
    Reviews went along these lines:
"oh my godd! spoike and faye are the cutst couple ever!!!! you have to right moore!! i luv you're fiC!!!"
    or...
"Spike and Faye. They sooooo belong together. Nobody better be denyin'! I know ya'll can't be denyin'! Ya'll know it! Ya'll know it! But...if ya really want a twist, make the guy Vicious. I've always wan't a Faye/Vicious story."
0.o Faye and *VICIOUS*?!?! What kind of crack are you *on*?
    and then there's
"awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww-breathe-wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!! Spike and Faye coupling!!!! YAY!!!!!! I'm not gonna say any bad thing cause.. i luv that couple! @.@!!!!!!!! continue pleaze! i luv it! ty!"

And yes, those are actual reviews. I'm not even going to touch the Spike/Faye lemons.
Just goes to show you - there is no such thing as a series or a fanfic without romance! It doesn't matter if two characters simply say, "Hello," to one another in the series - people will write fanfics about it! *twitch* I think I need to go watch some mindlessly violent TV right now to wash the sap off my fingers.
  • being an 'artiste' 2001-11-26 16:10:55 I just got done writing a Legend of Basara fanfic (brings my total to 5 now...). The writing is a bit rushed, but I'm pleased with the emotions and imagery evoked.

Lately I've been feeling very creative. Amazing what some vacation time will do, huh? My Basara vid seems to be making itself, since it just flows so well. I've lately had quite a few ideas for website layouts (yeah, I know, I'm a dork ;P ), and then there's this surge of story ideas I've had.

I've always enjoyed writing, and I'm not too shabby at it (despite the poor quality of my ramblings here :) ). I've started writing little fanfic character vignettes, which are great to write since 1) I actually finish them! and 2) my strengths in writing are in characterization and description. I've never been very good at coming up with plots. They're almost always corny. But people will forgive you a lot for a simple plot if you have detailed character development.

Anyway, I don't consider myself an artist or artistic. I'm more of a scientifically-minded person. But I love writing, and expressing myself, and I love looking at other people's art and finding out the story about it (example: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. My God, I'll never look at Van Gogh's sunflower paintings in the same way...). And some of the things I've seen really press my logic-oriented mind into believing in muses.

One day at work, I was seized by this burst of inspiration. I scrambled to write it down, and for once I had an *entire* story - novel-length - laid out in my mind. I could see every little scene in my head. So I outlined it, and while I haven't actually started writing it yet, the outline itself amazes me. It's essentially a giant character piece, but it just looks so *good* that I can't believe it came out of my head. Does anyone else ever have this happen to them? I'm not saying my ideas are earth-shattering, but sometimes I'll just be inspired something that seems beyond me. After all, how could little tiny me come up with something so... rich or emotional, etc.? It's like the piece itself - be it a story, a drawing, a music video - just uses you as its tool to make itself come into being. Ahh, who am I kidding? I'm really a romantic at heart. :) And I don't mind being used in such a way. I don't consider myself artistic, as I said, but it's nice to know that in some small way I can bring something beautiful into the world. That's what really matters to me, I guess. To contribute something beautiful. I wonder if anyone else feels that way.

There was really no point to this, I suppose. I just wanted to air some thoughts of my own. Guess I better get back to work, huh? :)
  • i have to gloat to knghtbrd 2001-11-26 10:03:40 Wahaha! My Cowboy Bebop Boxed Set came in the mail Friday! Woohoo!! The box is so preeeeeeeeetty. • for alternaturefutures... 2001-11-23 23:57:50 "We have not yet BEGUN to fight!"

    ;)
  • I've got to quit reacting like that... 2001-11-22 03:04:27 rei29, every time I read your journal I get freaked out. I read "Becca-chan" and immediately think you're talking about me. ^_^; Yeah, my friends call me Becca-chan. I think it's cute. Much better than 'Becky.' *shudders*

Just go back from dinner and a movie with Jo-chan, who's in town for Thanksgiving. We were at the restaurant for well over an hour just having soup and salad since we were catching up and having all sorts of pseudointellectual discussions. :) It was a lot of fun. I can honestly say that I'd be quite happy if we did this sort of thing for many, many more years. It's great to have friends like that. :)

Oh, yeah, and we saw _Spy Game_. Damn cool movie. :) Nothing profound, just cool. It's nice to see a movie like that every so often, one that's just *cool* - w/o being stupid or too mainstream.

Well, since tomorrow (or later today, I should say) is the Marathon Cooking Day, I better head to bed. Night, all!
