Uh hey.
A few months back, I got recruited by Spooky Dinosaur Turco into his fold of creators to become the official third member of Dinosaur Studios.
Telling you how I came in contact with Turco, and soon after Leontes, is another long story all together that I have no desire in telling right now.
I'm working on my first video for the group (It's also my first AMV) right now. It's a fairly long video, it's over 5 minutes, and I'm starting to feel I've bitten of much more than I can chew.
The video is fairly simple. It's FLCL to a song by the band from my one time home Brooklyn NY; Les Savy Fav. If anyone has been keeping up to date with the three videos our studio has put out thus far, then you know our style. We are trying to break down all rules that apply to making AMV's. Debunking all myths in how these are supposed to be viewed and enjoyed, is something that I am concentrating the most on.
Everything should not be on the beat.
Life does not begin and end with how good you are using adobe after effects.
Where's the adventure in simply synching one clip after another, and why bother retelling the story of a series. Yeah I saw Cowboy Bebop. Yes, I know what happened. Why the hell would I want to watch a three minute thirty second retelling of the spike/vicscious storyline synched to some pop rock tune?
I'm sure some people like those things, and that's fine by me. We are all entitled to our opinions, but I feel that I personally would like to see something different. I want to see a video that makes me interpret the video on it's own. I don't want to think back on a series while I watch a video, I want to think about the video, and hopefully interpret it on it's own. Turco and Leontes have already done this twice with Kid Eva, and City of the Rain Dogs. I am not really an avid AMV watcher, and don't pay attention to the scene too much. If anyone else out there knows of creators who have similiar styles to my boys in dinosaur studios, throw me an email drummer@dinosaurstudios.org and I'd be happy to check it out. I suck at replying to email, so if you do send me a recomendation or two, believe me, I'm thankful, just forgetful.
I've hit a major block in my editing. Like I said earlier in the entry, I'm trying to tackle many issues in this video stylistically, let alone the issues that I'm trying to convey metaphorically through the animation and song. Granted this is my first video, so I should cut myself a fair amount of slack, but my damn perfetionist tendencies take over, and I sit here slaving over 4 seconds for two hours only to scrap what I had worked on. very painful stuff that I'm sure you've all been through. Plus I have to live up to the high bar set by the other members of my studio. All of this very strenuous.
If you permit me to be a gloating fanboy for a brief moment, I'd just like to say Dinosaur studios has the best taste in music in the AMV world. Bar none. Where else can you find Tom Waits around here? Fantastic.
Ah, time to go outside, have a gin and tonic, throw on the new yeah yeah yeah's record, and enjoy the weather on my porch. Maybe even read some more of Mao II if I nothing else presents itself.
Take care.
