  • Children of Men 2007-01-12 22:59:35 "Jesus Christ." "What the FUCK?" That's basically went through my head for two hours when I wasn't sympathizing with the plight of a woman on the run who is giving birth to the only known newborn child in the world for roughly 20 years.

This movie comes from a unique perspective, as I'm pretty damn sure you haven't seen anything like it before. You can try to grasp at it by comparing it with things like The Pianist and oddly enough, Half Life 2, but it's futile. I have to give it up for this film in not only terms of originality, but simplicity too.

No children are being born, and the world is falling into despair and chaos. And in the midst of a great decline into depression and escalating conflict, a pregnant woman appears in the midst with the protagonist (Clive Owen). The minute you see her revealing her condition to him, you get the feeling that they're going to be dragged through the worst this world has to offer, and that's pretty much the case. It does utilize an edgy sense of realism by randomly inserting harsh violence into the scenes at times, and it's effective enough.

The film's most poignant scenes come from the peoples' mixed reactions to the child, even culminating in stopping an army dead in its tracks in the midst of a horrid urban battle. I can't say I've seen many movies that wrench at your soul the way this does. The movie itself feels as unexpected as each of its surreal but very plausable circumstances. I think I also have to admit that it's possibly the best apocalyptic film I've ever seen.

The film doesn't delve much into explaining its circumstances, and the writer probably felt it wasn't really neccessary to convey, which I think worked very well in this case. It may deter you from enjoying this film if you're a sci-fi nerd who demands a shakedown on the hows and whys. You'll be as lost in this scenario as the world it portrays. But if you want some out of the fucking mundane, by all means, go see this movie now. I think the thoughts it'll provoke out of you are worth the emotional stress.
