JOURNAL: SLB (Frank Summers)

  • I lied =P 2003-08-12 14:55:47 Ok, so I'm not really making music videos anymore. I kinda wish I was, and I've even recently bought new computer equipment made just for video editing.

Honestly, I've got too much going.

    Let's count the ways:

    1. Losing my job in 3 months (well, not losing really. Being honorably discharged from military service isn't losing, but I am kinda losing a steady paycheck)

    2. Trying to get back into college (this is important cause if I can do that, my GI Bill will kick in, hence money, hence food)

    3. Office turmoil (Our office is getting a lot of new people.....about 50!!! And guess who's training ALL OF THEM?????)

    4. MMORPGs (If you value your real life, stay away from these. For the love of god, stay away from these. I have over 2,000 hours of anime I've bought and haven't watched (some of it still in wrappers) because of this. For those of you who can do this casually, good for you. Being holed up in your house by yourself kinda makes you needy for social interaction though)

So, that's my situation. Honestly, trying to keep up with my online lives (which I may be ending here due to their effect on my real life), new anime to watch, and a future to be concerned with, I'm not going to kid myself about making another one, until this job thing is taken care of, and I'm financially comfortable with myself again.

Still, I haven't even been active in the community ever really, even though I'm like #78 here. 78 of almost 100,000......damn I feel really old....

Well, I won't say never though. I've still been having ideas running around. A lot of good ones. But I won't take them up until I'm settled. Maybe someone else will make them before me....*shrug*

Eventually, I'll be done with responding to everyone who left me an opinion. I might even put some money up, and put my vids up here to watch. Go Phade! Really happy to see everything has come together after all this time.

Anyway, back to the grind of life. Later AMVers.
  • Holy back from the dead, Batman 2003-05-12 09:20:26 Wow. I've been away from this community for a LONG time.

Just thought I'd drop in and say hi. I have become a victim of the MMORPG bug, and it tends to drain way too much of my time.

I'm going to promise myself I'm going to start work on a video this weekend. Not like too many of you care. I do need to send Phade some money for running this site as well as he has. I feel like an old grandpa, having a member number under 100.

Anyway, I'll let you get back to......whatevah.
  • New direction... in an old way 2002-11-26 08:18:24 Ok well, it's been a while. What else is new? Sorry, but I have more things to do than remember to update a web journal. Also, since I've lost some interest in AMVs, this site is not a #1 priority anymore. But since I haven't posted in a while, I have a couple rants to mention.

First off, what the hell is wrong with you people?!?!? I recently attended two cons and watched the music video entries. For the first time ever, I walked out of one even before mine was shown, just because the quality was so horrid. Did I not say this would happen? Did I not mention that as editing tools became more and more available, more and more crap videos would be emerging? I'm not saying that mine are masterpieces by any means, but it seems to me like the community has taken a dive for the worst. I think it's time for some of you to go find those burned CDs of your original favorite AMVs and try to remember why you liked them so much. I have seen too much lame lip-syncing, no beat matching at all, and I swear, if I see one more cut of Transformers or TMNT (what the hell was that doing in an ANIME music video) or anything like that, I'm going to puke all over your master tape! Do something damn creative! Try to break some damn barriers! Do something that no one else has thought of yet! BE FUCKING ORIGINAL!!!

    Ok, I feel better now.

Now that that's taken care of, here's my new plan. As many of you have noticed, more and more digital fansubs are being released than ever, some of which are straight DVD rips from American releases. Now, normally, I'm all about some good natured piracy, but this has gone too far. I know you guys are poor kids who can't get your mommies and daddies to fork over their credit card for it, but give me a break! Anime is a luxury! It is not a god given right to watch it! All the series I've watched that have been licensed, I have watched by BUYING THE DAMN DVDS! I have no problem with doing things not commercially available here, but I think that, like AMVs, the whole anime fanbase has been dumbed down by the influx of new and stupid people, who need to be hunted out with a pack of hungry wolves.

Now, you may be thinking, stealing from American anime companies is wrong, but I don't care for their translations or Americanization, and prefer the fansubbers ones better. Well, here's where I'm gonna step in. Lately, I've noticed that people have stopped releasing their subtitle scripts for download. People tend to just want to download the episodes and be done with it, and even though I agree with it somewhat, the whole point is to support the artists and livelyhoods of the people who made the anime we love, so they can get paid and continue to make more. Therefore, I am in the process of taking some of my favorite animes (both licensed and unlicensed) and writing SSA scripts that will be available to the public, based off the DVDs, since everyone loves them so much. I think it's time we as a community get back to the roots that made this such a great hobby and pasttime. This way, you will have a well-timed script that will relate to DVDs we all buy. This may be seen as outdated and a paltry gesture in most of the new fan's eye, but PLEASE SPARE ME! I work for the military and get paid far less than minimum wage, and I can still afford to buy a DVD or 2 from Japan, even at their inflated prices, so don't give me this crap of how expensive they are, and "I'm a poor college student. Boo hoo!" Cut the fucking crap.

Oh yeah, and this post is not appropriate for children.
  • Crap crap crap crap crap...and some crap topped wth crap 2002-08-16 14:25:06 Hi guys. Well, KNO fell through like a turd ina punch bowl. Pissed me off too, cause all my vocal cast left and cast me off like a bad smelling fungus that's been around just a little too long.

Oh well, back to music videos.

I have since moved to my own place off base, and am now rooming with a really nice guy. So nice he's letting me use his computer and all his....eh-hmmm...."borrowed"....software for video editing. I'm trying to decide what to work on. I will probably take a turn at the Lain/NIN video. Yes, I know my thing says it's done....well it LIED TO YOU. GET OVER IT!

Last but not least, I bought a new car. As soon as my old car sells, I'm getting Dejiko painted on the hood, and Puchiko and Rabi~en~rose painted on the back side windows. Did I mention my new license plate says, "NYO-NYO"? Damn, I'm a geek.
  • Kodomo No Omocha: The Producer's Journal - Day 01 2002-02-25 11:26:10 Well, I decided to rip off yet again, and rip Jeff's lovely idea for a producer's journal for the Kare Kano project. Well, this is mine.
If you can't tell by the header, we're starting work on the Kodocha dub. I know it's been done before, but I had to pick it up for several reasons.

    1. I love the show. It's so crazy and funny, it's hard to believe it's shoujo.

    2. Whose Line Is It Anime? did a dub of this a while back, and, even though it was a great effort by all involved, I thought it could be done better.

    3. Most people have sighted the craziness of the series and all the cultural references to some of the reasons it's been one of the most popular fansubs, and has yet to have any talks about it's license.

    4. Someone once said, "You must be crazy, trying to dub that series. It can't be done." I love a challenge.

So, here we are starting out where I left off, but we've got enough now to really get started, so here's your first update.

We began work last night on the BGM track. Some people tend to keep the original track as much as possible, and we'd like to do that. However, due to us not having access to the tracks like the cool people that are licensed, it would be a lot harder to just eliminate the vocals and recreate the sound around it, then just to build the audio totally from scratch. We've changed the intro song to more match the CD version, and also as an identifier that you're watching the dub. We've also got about the first 7-8 done with only music (no SE's or vocals) and we should get some more done tonight.
On the VA front, the first extremely rough draft of the dub script came out today. I've had a few people in the area interested for some time. I'll have to run up the contact list and see when we can start reading lines, and seeing what needs to be changed, and how things need to sound. I have to sit down with the episode sometime this weekend and watch the lip movements. I'll end up counting syllables all weekend so wish me luck that everything will fit.
I've heard a lot of good people in these roles, and I'm looking forward to the actual casting...where we can pair the voice directly with the character and say, "Yep, this works!"
If we get it done in a reasonable amount of time, we'll take it to as many cons as possible and show it off, or something like that.
Well, wish us luck. We've got a busy time ahead of us.

PS. Did I mention I still haven't gotten a new computer yet?
