Mandatory "I hate myself" Midterm Rant
2002-10-17 14:11:54
I don't know how long this is going to be. I do know, however, that those who read it will most likely give up on it soon, and those who read it all the way through are about 90% likely to do so just to laugh. I don't really care, though. I could make this entry private, but I've yet to do that for any of my entries so why should this one be any different?
This has just not been a good week for me. I don't know what it is, it's not post-con depression since I've never been so glad to leave a con early and be done with it as I have this year's AnimeUSA. Yes there was some fun, but it was really a lot of work. A lot of stress and time before the con went into it that turned out to be unnecessary, and I spent most of the con having what I was working on get crashed, fucked up, interrupted, MIA for other panelists, or done for a crowd of four, one being a friend, one someone who stayed to be nice, one who I can't stand, and the last who was getting on my nerves quickly as well. I'm never giving this much energy to a con again. It's not worth my time or my sanity.
Ironically I'm feeling the same way about German. Got a mid-C on the exam, even after corrections. I had REALLY been hoping to break an 80 but didn't. Got a 50% on my quiz last week, too, and the quizzes are worth a lot (35 points each, the last exam was worth 120). This is not good for me. I do more daily homework in German than for any other class and it's just not fun anymore. It IS a hassle, it IS a pain in the ass, it DOES suck, and class is NOT doing what it should be. We speak English half the time, and I dunno, it's hard to describe (damn you d-mode), but it's not as interesting as it used to be. I love the language but I hate the workload. This is an elective but it's ridiculous. The professor's just like "well, language is hard and you have to practice a lot." I can chat on IRC or read manga for practice with the language. I don't even have the will to think enough to IRC in German anymore. It's a pity.
The nasty shock, the one triggering this rant today, is that I got a 73 on my ROTC exam. How the fuck does anyone get a grade as shitty as seventy-fucking-three on an exam? Answer: Be an idiot like me. I didn't skew my studying enough and since I'm in an academic field I haven't taken a multiple choice exam outside of the GRE in 2 years. The problem with the GRE is that it requires you to think more about outhinking the exam than it does thinking about how to properly answer the questions. So I fucked up big time and got a shitty grade. I'm such a fucking idiot on some of these. It makes me want to just bash my head against a wall until it starts bleeding. I'm cranky, irritable, and depressed. And I've still got two more exams next week. Brit History has me slightly scared. I can't focus in class and the reading is dry as well so I've mostly skimmed it. It sounds stupid to say, but I really hope I can pull off what I did in French Revolution and Nazi Europe last year and just get real good luck on the exams and do some good self study leading up to it. The only exam I know I'm ready for outside of some IDs is Sumida's. He writes his exams to be predictable if you've been paying attention and since I have I'm good to go, but that's one class out of five. Not a good ratio.
Gee, what a surprise. Just checked the transcript, still don't have my cybertech grade. How fucking hard is it? Skim my paper, write A or B on it and punch it into the computer. Argh.
I could work on a project right now. It may make me feel better, except I can't. Every fucking video project I want to do right now is tied up in someone else, be it someone is supposed to be sending me source which isn't here yet, others needing to complete their areas first, or who knows what the fuck else. I'm sick of this. I don't even feel like doing this anymore. No one cares what I make, and when they do it's to see how much it sucks. In 21 years of life I've left behind nothing but the trail of an idiot. How pathetically worthless.

Work and Stuff....
2002-10-16 19:20:12
Now studying for Friday's vocabulary quiz. Here's to a good score. I still need to look over my notes for 224...should do that.
Vic's got the Weakest Link trailer edited but needs to sub it due to poor audio quality (the audio on the tape was SHIT). It desperately needs color correction as well, as his camera was an old and busted joint, but his so called new hotness DV500 doesn't allow realtime RGB or HLS correction and he doesn't have enough HD space to do a render or the desire to wait 5 days for an export with the effects. Hopefully the subtitles will be off color as well and I can fix it myself =)
Editing is on hold until the weekend at the earliest, the end of midterms at the latest. I need those tapes from Ian, dammit!
Anyhow, back to work now.

ARGH! MOTHERFUCKING FRUSTRATION!
2002-10-15 20:59:48
I'm working on my vocabulary list for German. I really need to have a bitch-out with this professor. She's giving us idiomatic phrases that 1)aren't in the dictionary and 2)nowhere in the sections of the grammar book we've gone over, and that's where she pulls all the words from (that and the thematic reading - yay, more hatred of foreigners *snooze*). Then we have wonderful things like this on our vocabulary list happening regularly. This example is the word "peinlich." Look at what happens when I plug it into my dictionary program:
awkwardness -- das Peinliche
awkward -- peinlich
embarrassing -- peinlich
meticulous -- peinlich genau
minute -- peinlich genau
neat and clean -- peinlich sauber
nicety -- die peinliche Genauigkeit
painfulness -- die Peinlichkeit
painful -- peinlich
particular -- peinlich
precise -- peinlich
to repugn -- peinlich berühren
scrupulous -- peinlich
sore -- peinlich
Now let's remove all the idioms and get it down to the core word itself:
awkward -- peinlich
embarrassing -- peinlich
painful -- peinlich
particular -- peinlich
precise -- peinlich
scrupulous -- peinlich
sore -- peinlich
This is still 7 meanings for this word, and about 3-4 truly different meanings. This means that I'm gambling heavily, as the meaning I use on my review sheet is the one I will commit to memory and use as my answer on all quizzes and exams covering the vocab. Since the vocab is really only covered once, that means one chance. If I choose the wrong meaning it means that I'm fucked over.
So I'm taking my vocab sheet to class tomorrow and will hold everyone up until I know EXACTLY what the fuck this person wants. If I have to do this for every fucking chapter I will.
And she speaks way too much English in class. Tomorrow I should be a dick and just start going "auf detusch bitte" constantly. This is just pissing the hell out of me.
