You oughta know!
2003-02-02 23:22:55
619 begins tonight. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, HIST619Z is my book-a-week graduate level History seminar. Hopefully it'll go well. Hopefully. I need it to graduate, so it better go well.
First TAS meeting of the semester was tonight. We had a good turnout, watched some cool stuff (that I'd seen the majority of) and went to Chipotle for dinner. Also managed to sell off my extra Tylor DVD, which paid for the cost of dinner and then some, so all's good there.
Today's class schedule is seeing Dr. Moyer to go over last semester's final, Deutsch, and sitting in on 225 lecture for fun and recap value. Then comes a nice long break and 619. A PO run will be included in that break to see if scholarship checks, books, or DVDs have arrived. Hope so. Things are starting to take off for this semester, so it should be interesting to see how the workload changes with the addition of things. I *DO* think that it's going to be a challenge to get ahead before Katsucon, especially for 619, and I'm going to get metaphorically thrashed if I don't get that book done on time. Thank goodness for Tuesdays off.
That being said, I don't think I'm going to do the line for RENT tickets before Katsu. Ryan (a friend in the theatre biz) says that the touring cast has gotten pretty bad, and the thought of sitting outside the Warner for 8 straight hours to keep my place in the line isn't an appealing one, so I shall save my time and my $20 and work at home instead.
I'm looking forward to Katsucon. I should be getting a press badge from Tsunami, which means that I can play inquisition with industry people and jump the cosplay line and get away with it. In return I'll do some kind of quality writeup for the mag and maybe give them an hour at the booth.
Anyhow, the hour is late and sleep is a good thing. New post soon!

And Stuff...
2003-02-01 23:14:52
The RAM works again, but I had to move it to a different slot.
Adric is so frelling annoying. Now I know why it was a good thing that I missed so many of the early Davison episodes of Dr. Who - this character pisses the hell out of me within 10 seconds of showing up onscreen. Thank goodness he dies in 2 more episodes.
Otherwise...classes are going on, homework has begun, have 4 pages of German Workbook to do tomorrow before TAS. Anime night was OK last night. Fun stuff to watch but not a big turnout.

Computer Issues...
2003-01-31 00:48:55
2003 is not proving to be a good year in technology for me. One of my RAM chips died, and while I was able to solve my heat problem by blasting out the dust from the fans on my processors, they're making quite a bit of noise now...enough that if it keeps me from sleeping I'm going to turn the computer off. Expect the FTP to go up and down as a result...also, the FTP will be out of service from about 5:45PM Friday night until possibly Saturday morning or late Friday night, depending on how anime night goes.
In other news, even though blowing the dust and stuff out of one of the processors/heatsinks/fans did make a difference (20 deg C!), the fan is still on its dying days and is going way slower than it should be, AND making a buttload of noise in the process.
I'm just ticked that the RAM chip died. At least I can call Crucial in the afternoon and see if they'll replace it for me. They're supposed to be great about their warranty program (read: they don't have to deal with it a lot so if you send something in they'll most likely say yes and replace it), and hopefully I won't have to pay for a new 256MB stick.
Seriously, though, I'm thinking that I may have to do what I really don't want to: Upgrade the central guts of my system and get a new MB, processor, RAM, and power supply. Everything else will stay in as long as it continues holding out, and as long as I take care of it, holding out is what it should do. The upside to this would be getting a major kick to my system, the downside is that it's looking to cost $400-500 to do it, and that's money that I don't really have right now, and it almost seems wrong to ask for hardware upgrading for graduation, especially when the potential for a camera (which also feels wrong) or plane tickets or something truly special is there. Then again I plan on graduating 2 more times, AND I never really got anything for High School graduation either...
Anyhow, it's 2AM, class is at 11, time for me to go to sleep.

It's time to kick it one last time...
2003-01-28 21:07:27
Today was the official start of Spring Semester. This is, barring any major problems, my last semester at the University of Maryland. I'm strangely optimistic about the whole affair, and am walking into it from a hopeful perspective. This semester is the gateway to my future. It is full of possibilities and potential, I just have to take advantage of them. As 10,000 Maniacs put it, These are the days that you remember.
Of course, my clases don't start until tomorrow. Having Tuesdays off is a nice feeling, even if it is the middle of the week when there's no real advantage to having it off other than I can do laundry without worrying as much about other people using all the machines...and speaking of laundry, I really need to do mine - the pile in my closet's getting to be scary again. Unfortunately this means paying for laundry, which kinda sucks since I just made a *huge* manga order from Germany, and even with flat rate shipping it came to three digits, and the euro is NOT in my favor.
Tomorrow I have two classes that I have to go to - German (taught once again by the evil Fr. Dr. Moyer) and American Studies (taught by.......someone). I'm also going by choice to sit in on Dr. Sumida's HIST225 class. At five sections with enough people oversubscribed to fill a sixth, it's a timely thing to do and I can ask about the books that I still haven't been able to get that are on the list...and inform him of my triumph over the GRE writing section. I also need to pester Dr. Gilbert who is returning to the DC area so that he can get my letter sent to Toronto, as I *do* want to have a chance at admission.
Otherwise...got in a bunch of stuff today. My amazon order with the rest of my American Studies books arrived, as did my Tylor OAV discs. If anyone wants the first OAV disc, factory sealed, email me. I've already got a copy and am willing to sell this one off to the first person who pays me $12+shipping for it (my cost). I'm not profiting from this, y'hear?
Finally, Chris and I are hosting a welcome back for spring semester anime night at the apartment this friday, the 31st. Come meet some of the weirdos that I talk about here and hang out, watch anime, etc. The fun starts at 6:30PM, email me at j*a*c*o at s0y0k4z3 dot gro. remove the stars in part one, turn the second into an @ sign, un-leet the vowels in the domain, change the dot to a period, and flip gro. Sorry to make this so much work, but spambots are everywhere. Anyhow, just email me, say hi, let me know that you're in the area, and I'll send you directions on how to get here. Cool?
Time to do some more reading or watch Miyu or something.

Music survey from MCWagner's Journal...
2003-01-26 22:56:33
1. What was the first record you owned?
Oh wow. It's really hard for me to guess on this one...my mother had a lot of vinyl, but she'd get us albums we wanted for our birthdays. Since mom was a big fan of Lite 96, I remember getting Lionel Richie's "Dancing on the Ceiling", and Peter Cetera's "Glory of Love", and Stevie Wonder's "In Square Circle". I also remember CD longboxes and mistaking Laserdiscs for records in a video store...
2. Is there a song that reminds you most of your childhood?
Mom also listened to a lot of oldies, as well as stereotypical Jewish Mother stuff...so Neil Diamond and the Beach Boys...and some Barry Manilow. I don't really remember linking songs to feelings until 7th or 8th grade, and then it's Green Day and Alanis...and REM. Out of Time was a turning point in my musical tastes.
3. If you could spend a night with five musical artists who would they be?
Alanis Morrissette, Weird Al, the Indigo Girls, Michael Stipe, and despite current scandal, Pete Townshend.
4. If your life was a movie, what would play over the following:
Opening credits: Idol Talk (Yoko Kanno)
Love scene: I'll let you know when there is one...
Driving scene: Dancing by Viki Vale (Initial D Super Eurobeat 2 Track 5)
Closing credits: Midnight Radio (Hedwig and the Angry Inch)
5. If applicable, name a song or concert that moved you to tears:
None yet...close, but none yet.
6. Name one musical artist you'd like to see banished.
Just one? Oh man...Anything from the playlist of WHFS or Sweet 98 (to blend radio markets)
7. Name a song you would rather never hear again.
"Papa Don't Preach" by Kelly Osbourne. Cool song when I was in Austria watching The Osbournes on satellite with everyone on a regular basis explaining the jokes, sucked after doing an AMV with it. Wow that was painful.
8. Name an album that is perfect all the way through.
"Let's Fire" Fire Bomber (Macross 7 First Vocal OST), "Time" ELO
9. Music you like that can be considered a guilty pleasure.
Elton John (I'm male, so sue me), a lot of my more hyper/sugarsweet music, the showtunes, and my one Donny Osmond mp3
10. If your music collection were about to go up in flames, which 5 CDs would you save?
The import discs - those suckers were EXPENSIVE!
11. Is there a song that describes you or a situation you've been in so well that you could have written it?
Probably. Damned if I can remember it right now...
12. Best music-related movie?
I'd be obliged to say "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", but it pales horribly to the stage version. The South Park movie is a great musical film, and I'm a sucker for old stuff like "Singing in the Rain".
13. What is your favorite all-time video?
Legit? I still haven't seen the Stadium House Trilogy, so I can't judge those. I *am* a fan of Video Killed the Radio Star (original version), and as much as I hate the man, the video for "Without Me" by Eminem was remarkably creative.
14. Current favorite radio hit?
I don't listen to the Radio. On the rare occasion that I do, it's oldies. On my current heavy-use mp3 playlist are the OCRs for Hedwig and Hairspray, a couple foreign RENT ost's, themes from this past anime season, and a couple AMV related tracks....and a ton of KLF
15. Do you sing or play any music instruments?
I took a semester long class in singing, but I'm still not very good. I wish I were better. Never learned an instrument, but I'd like to play piano or guitar one day.
