And I'm not really even an anime junkie. My attitude towards anime (and the same goes for live-action jdorama) isn't that "it's cool because it's anime," but rather that anime is a whole field of potentially interesting stuff. The result is that, just like movies, or English-language TV, there are some animes I purely love, and a great many more I don't care about. I love Boogiepop Phantom, for example, and I know you'll never find anything like it except in anime,; but if I don't like romantic comedies or shallow action flicks in my own language, I won't like them any better in Japanese.
I pretend that my attitude gives me some objectivy and detachment.
I basically starting doing these as an answer to my daughter. She'll download and watch AMV's and I'd watch over her shoulder, praising or criticizing. "Do some yourself, then," she told me. In other words, "put up or shut up."
"Well," I answered, "there's a learning curve, I mean, I don't know the tools and stuff."
She smiled and turned away.
Yeah. It sounded like a lame excuse to me too.
Well, hell, I thought. There are people who take up new things when they retire, I thought. Old as I feel, I'm a long way from that. You're just lazy, and maybe worse, scared to look stupid compared to some people young enough to be your kid.
So, here I am, in the spirit of "lousy videos are better than wussing out." Wish me luck, huh?
