I have wanted to make AMVs for over a year now and finally was able to complete my first one on July 17th 2005. While I don't have a lot of experience at either video or audio editing I am learning quite a bit by working on my AMVs and hope to create many more in the future.
My main method for getting an idea for my AMVs is really just my own perception of the song and the series that I link it to. If I ever hear a good song the ideas for an AMV just comes to mind and this method works best for me so far.
My videos are not very heavy into digital and visual effects though I still use some. I attempt to have my AMVs concentrate more on telling a story along with the music than trying to make them look like really flashy eye candy.
I mainly use Windows Movie Maker for the creation of my videos then I export over to Adobe Premiere Pro for any other touch-ups and then use Virtual Dub to remove any subs that may be in my AMV.
