I started getting involved in making AMVs in the summer of 1999 (well, planning stages, not the technical until February 2000). I have entered into a competition in the year 2000 at Anime North (the only convention I can go to, because I can't travel and CN Anime, IMO, sucks in comparison =P). I've always been excited about the anime music videos at competitions and such since Anime North 1998. I always have high respect for the videos that I've lost to in the competitions, as I so got owned, and hope to learn (somehow) from them. I still like to think I'm creative in my own right (ok, I'm stubborn =P). I'm hoping soon to spread into online competitions that I've started to notice popping up.
I like high energy music, and expect my vids to follow that love most of the time (not all the time though ^^). I also like the videos that have a solid theme/story in them. Anybody that can both, that's greatness. Anything that can really evoke emotion r0x0rs too.
As for tastes in anime, I love both mecha (although I really dislike Eva because of the ending), and sword-involved genres most, but I'm open minded to most genres except for the extremes in mahou shoujo... and I don't jump up and down for Yaoi either =P. Romance, comedy, gothic and mind-f@#$s (gotta have the mind-f#@#s! =D), all are game.
It looks like I might end up waiting for AMV.org's hosting after all, or I might not, it is a coin-toss at the moment. The thing is, I want to remake some of the vids before I release them now.
*Kix machine* oh yeah, my Comp sux, you'll notice that I use other people's resources to make videos (yeah yeah yeah, I'm a mooch).
Upto 4 videoes now, completed the Rockman X vid, "Irregulars - The Beast Machines".
