My name is Chris, and I am a twentysomething art history student living in the Washington DC area. My love affair with AMV's began in 2002 when my best friend called me into his den and showed me the Come out and Play/Akira video, the Breath/NGE video and the Aluminum video to Blue Monday. I had no idea what they were, but thought they were amazing. Over the next two years he would supply me with disks, and when I went to college, I finally had non-dial up internet, so I downloaded like crazy. At any given moment, I have more then 40 gigs of AMV's on my computer, and sometimes use them as screen savers.
In the summer of 2005, one of my friends (listed on this site as gabichan) showed me some stuff she had done and I was impressed. Over Christmas break of that year, I made my first complete video, which was entered and shown at Katsucon 2006. I also have shown AMV's at AWA 2006, although I attend several other cons as well (and make it a point to always watch AMV contests). I also serve as Mobile Tech co-ordinater for AnimeUSA.
Outside the world of anime, I haunt art galleries, cook gourmet meals, enjoy international travel, read excessively on the subject of art theft and art crime, work for the US State Department, and make fabulous hats. I am afraid that I do not fit the stereotype of AMV editor in the least. Sorry about that...
I suppose I should offer a few words about my AMV's since they have given me this lovely little soapbox.:
There are somewhere around eleventy billion anime music videos in the world. Everyone has some they like, everyone has some they don't. I create videos for me and me only. I do it partly as a hobby and partly as therapy.
If you don't like my video, don't bother to tell me, because frankly, I don't care. If you do like my video and would like to comment on it, I would love to hear what you have to say.
Useful comments say things like "Really good output here, great concept, and some pretty creative editing as concerns subtitle avoidage"
Comments I really don't care about include: "@_@ Horible song."
Basically, unless you can say something constructive either way, you really aren't helping. Also, that goes for pretty much everything in life, not just AMV's.
My AMV's are usually non-sequential, fairly artsy character profiles that examine how a person or group of people in an anime respond to events around them. Generally they have no plot in and of themselves; they instead focus on the overall feel of the show guided as it were by the 'plot' of the song. I spend long periods of time choosing the song and anime, and I always have a 'reason' behind it. If you don't like a song or an anime, please save yourself the trouble of watching the video. If you do watch it, I don't need you to send me an essay explaining why you hate said song or video.
Finally, I include loads of symbols, because I am an art history major and, simply put, think in symbols. If you don't like symbols, feel free to not watch (and leave this symbol filled planet while you are at it).
My AMV's also:
--DO NOT include subtitles, logos (if at all possible), or any other trash like that
--ARE NOT cutsy, gimmicy or mainstream
--DO include a quick, silent Junglist Ganesh Media bump, as well as a quick, silent screen with video info (so you never have to search, whilst being as un-obtrusive as possible)
--ARE made from the high quality footage and music on the best program I have available to me at the time
If at any time you want a clean copy of a video, high quality copy of a video, or want me to submit a video to your con, please let me know and I would love to give it to you. Please feel free to contact me.
