Error after playing XviD files

I installed the AMVapp, and when I play XviD files in Windows Media Player nine, it plays just fine, but when it goes to play the next file (mp3 or whatever) the media player crashes. This happens if either I double click another media file to play, or the player goes to play the next file in the playlist. Though, it has no trouble looping a single XviD file. Also, whenever I open an XviD file in Ulead Video Studio, it crashes instantly... Uninstalling FFDirectShow seems to solve the problem, but I need FFDirectShow...

Also, the new media player (series 9) can't play AVS files at all. But the older version can!

Anybody have any idea what's going on?

Try switching media players and see if the problems persist. Media player clasic is what i use and i havn't found many problems with it yet (except in playing audio tracks from OGMs, but i'm told that is because i have an older version of the program).

I'll try that. And that reminds me, it seems avs files won't play in my Windows Media Player 9, but it has no problem playing in the classic player. Is that normal or something?

".avi" is a grouping term for many diferent codecs (DivX and XviD are examples). i really don't know why certain microsoft based products don't work correctly, so i try to use as few of them as possible.

.... no, it's a <i>container</i> that can include streams of many different codecs (DivX and XviD are examples).

Ogg Media and Matroska can contain DivX and XviD streams just as well as AVI can.

I had a similar prob with Divx codecs. Except with mine it wouldnt play the actual file (in Divx) so what i did was went to the divx homepage, and downloaded 5.2.1 codec. Everything worked fine after that. If this is not a solution than sorry i cant help, but i tried!

Thanks for all the help. But actually, my second problem wasn't with avi files... it was with avs files... You know, AVISynth scripts? My windows media player nine can't even play the script that should just display the version...
Here's the error it gives me:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play.

But it plays fine in the classic media player... Should I just accept this as normal? Or is there a way to fix this?

It's just WMP 9 sucking.
I don't know of any guaranteed way to fix it, except using a better player like Media Player Classic
