well, yeah, but, we were on the subject of a profanity filter.. And it was just my view, if everyone's concerned about "today's children".

Besides...

I curse all the time, so if you were thinking *I* couldn't handle it...

... But maybe I'm just too confused right now to process that comment the right way...

Phade.
Well, when someone curses the filter could always change f*** to "ATTENTION, I AM A STUPID PERSON!"

Then it would be really easy to spot them

If there's to be any filter, I say it ought to be something more individualistic, something each of us would have control over. There's not much we can do for the parents if they don't have the sense to keep an eye on their kids when they're using the internet, but there's plenty we can do to weed out all the major bozos we don't care to hear about. What I'd like would be a "blacklist" device on the search engines here that would cause them to ignore entries with the words and phrases I decide I don't want to see. Not only could I cut out all the entries with pointless swearing in them ("Grab the devil by the horns and..." etc.) but also the names of various musicians I'm not interested in hearing. (Marilyn Manson, System of a Down, and Linkin Park come to mind.) That way, I don't have to see anyone's F*** video in the search and punk rockers who hate oldies don't have to see anyone's Neil Diamond AMV.

I think an optional filter is an excellent idea; I deal with enough stupid people daily that I'm attracted to the possibility of avoiding their whiney rants when I don't want to deal with them. When they've found a dictionary and can say something halfway intelligent instead ("you dasypygal!") then I'll deal with them. :D

I also have to confess that I love the idea of letting the filter alter certain words to HELLO, I AM A STUPID PERSON.....

Ah! So a language/cursing filter has been suggested! So nice to find people of integrity.
I most certainly agree with this idea. I've rarely come here after learning what kind of material is posted, but this time I've gone through the obscenities in the forum section to try and help with the problem. Yes indeed, a customizable filter would be the best. That way, you are not forcing censorship on anyone - you don't have to use it if you don't want to, but it's there for the people who do want to use it.
Aside from text, it ought to have an option to block out the images you find at the left and the bottom of posts. Some of those are rather obscene as well. The ideal plan would be to have some people to go through them to pick out the offensive ones and put them in their own separate category. However, that idea is not really feasible. That is a lot of work to do, and images can change at any time.
As far as concerns that this would make people who use foul language look stupid - I really don't see how **** looks any more stupid than an actual curse word.

My question, still, is why?

The lack of the filter makes this forum, along with the lack of edit button, makes people put weight into their words. Or, if they don't, it is very telling of their quality as a person.

So, why remove the transparency and make people type stupid l33t and other such go-arounds, which I find more insulting, even?
