i usually carry my jutte arout, somewhere on my body. I used to get into alot of fights and most of them I've had to win :P it was only the last 23 fights that i had used a jutte because the idiots thought that using a knife or pole was going to save them a bit of trouble :P

I don't fight as much anymore, but i go for the vitals more than anything, or just yell really loudly and charge at them, they get a little stunned so you just bowl em down and pound their heads into the pavement.

Or i'd carry a blunt katana about, hidden underneath my trenchcoat or pay 400 bucks for a bastard sword at a comic book store :P

If they carry a gun then it is best that you know what you are doing in a fight. (would love to pull the vicious moves of cowboy bebop) or leap behind something and try to sneak about so that you can throw something at them by surprise :P

What an old school thread. I remeber a thread EXACTLY like this one just when I joined. I can't remeber my answer the first time round but I would have to say that guns and a little stealth can beat all. Mmmmmmm Splinter Cell addiction.

jutte .. wish i could rememver what that is ... is it that blunt little metal bar on a key chain ... that you stab people with?

hmm blunt katana ... that would hurt a lot ... or you can jsut use a sharp one and keep it in the sheath ... those hurt too, i know because my friend whacked me in the shin with his ... bastard.

yea, viscious' close combat scenes against spike is pretty cool ... but to be that good .. man you'd be god ... or almost... well almsot would be good enough for me.

Seriously, you sound like you're plaing for a war or something. I mean I expect it from kthulhu but I didn't know we had more like minded people around here...

a jutte is not on a keychain, it is like a sai only its like this rod of metal that fire pokers are made out of with only one hook, used by ninjas as a gardening tool as well as blocking blades, tearing flesh and twisting arms. oh did i mention that its so strong that it can break bricks? even a light hit would chip out a large chunk from the brick :P I tried it before :P

anyway, i don't need a sharp katana, if it's blunt it just hit them over the head or something, don't want to kill them or anything just knock em out so i can escape :P

war? naaaaaaaah maybe a little bit of a rumble over the place but a war you would need lots of explosives, machine guns knives swords hammers saws, baseball bats a chinese kung fu friend and a picture of a naked woman to scare away then iraqis so they don't interfere :P

okay bad joke but still...
i want a bastard sword... me and ss5_majin_bebi went in that comic store and had an examination of those things :P it was funny, we didn't know tht the sign said do not touch the swords because the stuff that was holding it up there had come loose on one side :P

oh well time to post somewhere else, got nothing better to do :P

The problem with most sword made nowadays is that for one they are made with a purposly blunt edge (as spoon is sharper, I kid you not) and two they don't hold up to wear and tear very well. I bent mine just hacking a tree a coupple times. You have to find a honest to goodness blacksmith if you want a sword you could kill a man with and not have to bend the blade back into the right place or take the handle off and put it back on becuse it shifted position afterwards.

But anyway, if you are in teh SCA you can probably find a real sword, not some crappy display piece. If you deside to by one from a comic book store or something though make sure it has a counter weight on it at least. FYI a counter weight is something on the end of the handle (brass ball useualy) that is heavier then the handle and cross-hilt, though if the sword has a basket case on it then you probably don't need one. Without it the sword is hard to swing becuse all the weight is in the blade, but with a counter weight it'll have better ballence and be useable.

Also, a sword should have a blood groove on it (a shallow vally down the middle of the blade) It dosen't actualy have anything to do with blood, it just makes it lighter.

well, even original swords didn't put up with too much wear and tear.

swords, even theatrical ones, are pretty flimsy, true . . but you couldn't expect to go chopping into another battle before your sword couldn't cut through a spear, or a shield, or chainmail, or a bone.

I know, but they wouldn't fall apart I'm sure. Keeping a razor edge on the thing wouldn't be that important really. A butter knife would 'eff you up pretty good if it was the size of a sword. It's all about the power of teh swing being focused onto such a narrow striking zone.
No mostly what I would look for is whether it will not break or bend in un-repairable ways.

Also, if you're really interested in finding yourself a decent sword the best place to look would be a large SCA event (www.sca.com) or, better yet, you might be able to find some of the blacksmiths on the web. I know of a number of people who sell chainmail designed for armored combat on-line, so finding a sword vender theroreticly wouldn't be to hard. Try doing a search for SCA blacksmiths on Google or something.

Sounds like you're looking for Japanese style blades though? Well, the SCA mostly focuses on the more euoripean side of the midevil era. But considering all the other wacky crap you can get on-line I imagine that finding a real katana for sale isn't out of the question.
