I'm impressed by videos where the song and the anime flow together so you can't really tell which one was made for the other. To do this, there are so many small things that have to match; not just the action/lyric synch but the amount of effects and the emotional overtones. The best example of this I can think of is Kevin Caldwell's "Believe", which still impresses the heck out of me.

Also, I'm a sucker for effects, so in order to impress me you need lots of tight-looking, well-timed and tasteful effects. For instance AD's "Shameless Rock Video", which is totally brilliant (though I'm not sure about the rainbow-colored parts in the middle and the word 'tasteful').

Still, one of my favorite vids has no effects at all: Scott A Melzer's "All Star". Now that's something I wish I could do...

- Originality
- When the anime and the song go well together. Flow, if you wanna call it that.
- Good lyric sync. Beat sync for things like instrumentals and the sort.
- Use of anime, songs, or artists I like.
- Good use of text.
- I'm not a fan of special effects. So when you use one or two and they add to the plot, then I am impressed. Of course, a good AMV without them impresses me the most.

A concept that works and good, solid editing to back it up, along with a healthy dose of originality.

Practically what most of the people said above PLUS the usage of newly released anime series that's doesn't get much attention like D.N. Angel or even Figure 17. Good thing some international creators actually attempt this.

Original, yet well-executed effects.

Actually, the one thing that really impresses me is when someone, so to say, blows my head off with something I didn't expect. This happened several times in AMV's. Just something completely out of nowhere, "ex nihilo", that grabs me in some way for which I was caught unprepared.

This isn't originality; it's something more. Sometimes it's, in fact, the opposite of originality. But it IS the truest form of artistry, for me.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Non-stock effects.

If i just started using premiere and looked at AE for a total of 30 minutes and can figure out all the effects you used in your video i am not impressed.

Rotoscoping done well... that makes me so damn happy :D

Going along with that, multi-character lipsynch. I'd love to have the pacience to do that.

Videos that use more than 300 clips... my pacience wears thing way before that...

I guess that's it.
