I'm getting the impression that some people don't beleive that competition can be fun and healthy :?

I love the atmosphere of a good AMV competition. Most people are having a good time, and some creators are learning from each other, and the best part; the audience roars ^^. Plus it drives you to actually think about what you're doing as you create the video.

This is where things become key. If people actually think as they're making their video - which includes accepting the fact that you can't make it due to resource limitations for some people (myself included in my current situation), then things would be pheonominally improved as far as quality of AMVs is concerned.

But it is only a hobby... is it? It's also an artform. Music is a hobby, but Musicians aren't gonna be satisfied with what they'd call crap. Same goes for visual artists, you become a perfectionist with these hobbies, AMVs aren't exception it seems to me, as they breed the perfectionist as well.

How to be a great creator? It's not clear-cut. I think if you're a nice person (being social helps as well) and get around (cons) while making vids that are well thoughtout (doesn't matter if they're comedic, serious, action, or something completely different), perhaps building up technique on the way, you'll be on the right track, people will see your work.

I only shared so someone would look and say.. Okay, you need to improve in this, and that.. and you could use this instead of that.. <gasp> I thought we were a community to share and improve one another, and to vent. Then Again Im a NEWBEE what do I know!
Actually, to me it sounds like you have a very mature grasp of the concept. Kudos, good sir.

Well, TRZ, there are a few points there. Yes, there is a circuit of high-level competers who are going to have fun, because they're in their element. But that's just not for everyone.

Personally, I hate competition. To me they all look like symbolic pissing contests.

And I really don't take to the assumption that "if you're not in competition you are just slapping together videos at random without thinking." Where does that assumption come from, by the way? What makes it impossible to make videos for fun and want to make them good? I want to improve my videos so they're more enjoyable for myself and anyone who'd want to watch them, not so I can say "See, my symbolic dick is bigger than your symbolic dick!"

Is it so hard to imagine that people might be having fun with this? Is it really necessary to write off everyone who doesn't consider AMVing THE MOST HOLY ARTFORM KNOWN TO MAN as a "thoughtless" idiot?

Must get out of rant mode today.

There's more then enough competition just trying to learn the ropes. Those darn software just chase you around and beat you up and then you have your pc wanting to see if it can crash faster then you can edit.

well, for me, competition with an inanimate object is quite enough. :D

I know what you mean. These computers keep on freezing up and crashing during the middle of the project good thing I save after each 10 - 15 sec. I get done of the video. Anyway I think making video is the fun of it but then competing and seeing it at a convention is the thrill of actually knowing something of yours is being shown and being played for people watching it. Yes you can have fun making the video but it doesn't mean that it isn't fun to compete. Besides I thought this thread was Who can you be consider one of the well known creators/ productions of amv's? Anyway thanks for lightening up the subject.

Eh..why do that? Look at my avatar..(in all it's moody bishonen glory I might add) and people don't call me sir..course could be my SN kinda gives that all away  'Sides..Tutter is cute! ^^ *hugs her Tutter and Bear plushies*

And on the subject..I always enjoy a good competition..wether I win or loose. Which is why I'm currently trying to decide which vids to send to AWA. Since I might actually be going to that con..I thought "what the heck" and decided to try my luck there first.

I make AMVs because I love doing it, and I simply have a lot of fun making them. I send them to conventions and competition because I love a good competition with my peers- even if it's a pretty much foregone conclusion that I'm going to lose (like Otakon) - and to push myself to improve my skills. I'll tend to push myself much harder if I know the competition is going to be very tough, in any field or contest. The end result of the contest is ultimately far less important than the thrill of the competition, and how much I've improved in getting there...

This is why I italicized "good" competition. There's a lot of bad competitions, I'm fortunate enough to have only heard horror stories and not have actually been to a bad one. Have you competed at all before? If not, where do you get that judgement from?

Bad wording on my part, perhaps. I was saying that anybody that does some form of art - music, painting, sketching, sculpting, sewing, etc., people are in it because it is fun and because they want to create something enjoyable by themselves and other people alike. AMVs shouldn't be an exception to such an attitude. I wasn't intending to imply a competition is required to make someone think, I meant that competition adds motivation/drive.
The competitions of conventions is something that really should be experienced by every creator at least once. It's a unique feeling (and this feeling has nothing to do with winning or not - I've never won at one, for the record).
